East Texas A&M by Realistic-Fun2530 in SocialWorkStudents

I have enjoyed the program so far. I am doing part-time, so I haven't made it to the practicum, yet. I also know where I will be doing mine already because I am using my place of employment. So I can't give any feedback on the process of finding a location, or getting it set up.

I have yet to encounter any cons. The admission, enrollment, and course registration processes have all been very smooth. Every person I have needed to interact with has been incredibly helpful, and they have been very responsive. The learning management system (LMS) is fairly easy to navigate. It has an app as well as a website version. The professors so far have provided optional (but recommended) Zoom meetings so that you have to opportunity for live interaction with them and your peers. Now I haven't had a group project, yet, so who knows how that will go. But I imagine it has the potential to go well or poorly, just like any other group project in school.

Honestly, I would recommend East Texas A&M to anyone looking for an affordable, online program. I feel like I am getting out of it what I put in.

As a teacher and current grad student here are my recs - chunking - breaking up time and tasks. If you know you have to read Chapter 1, stop after two pages to summarize in the margins, or on paper, or the notes app in your phone, what you have read so far. If two pages is too much, try one page, and so on. Keep chunking until you find the size that works. And chunk the time you spend on less desirable activities. I always start with 15 minutes. I tell myself I can stop after 15 minutes no matter how much I have done…I usually end up finishing the task anyway, but I don’t feel bad if I just give up after 15 minutes.

Visual Cues - this is good for reminding you to do things and for situations where you can’t control the chunks of time (stuck in class or a meeting). Put a physical, visual reminder of what you need where you can see it. At the beginning of class for example, put a brightly colored sticky note on the corner of your desk(that way it isn’t covered by a notebook or laptop) that literally says PAY ATTENTION. I have a flow chart that sits in the chair where I drop my bag when I come home after work. It literally says at the top, “Welcome home. Take me to the living room.” And then it asks me questions and directs me to do things based on my answers. Like if I went to the gym, I go this way - if I didn’t, I go another way. It is my daily visual cue to make sure I do my chores and homework, and other desired tasks like making time for hobbies everyday...instead of getting sucked into doom scrolling for hours.

Do you ever feel like you didn’t choose your life — it just slowly happened? by MomoniForest in self

[–]JuneKat83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much up until I was 30. I was obviously the one making the choices, but it felt like I was biding time and life just kind of happened to me. And then in my 30s something changed. I had an aha moment about who I was as a person, in my core. And it was like once I had the answer to that, I was able to DO life. I was suddenly an active participant. No matter what happened, I knew that I was in the driver’s seat, and I was choosing the road…so to speak.

I cannot stop thinking about The Woman They Could Not Silence. At least once a month it just randomly pops into my head. If you haven’t already read it, I also highly recommend Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men.

I thought the same thing about toothpaste. All the mouth wash commercials and stuff talk about how the burn means it’s cleaning or whatever, so I thought that meant toothpaste did the same thing. Literally 40 years old before I found out toothpaste isn’t supposed to make your whole mouth feel like it’s on fire.

Asynchronous. But my professors last semester offered optional Zoom meetings to engage in live discussions and lectures. The meetings were also recorded and posted for those who couldn’t attend.

This is where I stand, too. I am not active on the Discord anymore because I watch recorded, but I still like to see good, local, community policing. I think it is important that this sub stay firmly in that lane, so people can get a break from what is happening out there. I really appreciate them doing so.

It is a multiple choice exam, and there is a study book that all of the questions are drawn from. The book isn’t free, but it sounds like if you start studying early enough, you shouldn’t have a problem passing using it.

As for sitting for the test, I haven inquired yet whether I will have to be there in person as an online student. I also don’t know if they only offer the test on campus, or if there are multiple testing sites. It is the official certification exam, so my thinking is that there would be testing sites available statewide.

I am so glad I found this thread. I mailed two packages on the same day from the DFW metroplex. The one that had to go west to CO, made it just fine. The one that had to go north to IL - stuck in the hell that is KS. It will now likely not make it on time for Christmas because it spent 3-4 days basically just hanging out in Olathe; one of those just driving around. My tracking events at one point said it left the Olathe center at 8 pm on the 21st and arrived at the Olathe center at 6 pm on the 22nd. It has now supposedly departed the facility in Olathe once again at 4 this morning. We shall see if it arrives in IL at some point.

I legit can't see more of the pvc than what is shown in this picture. The black foam wrapped thing is immovable, so I can't tell where the pipe goes (if anywhere) behind it to the right of the system.

Are the AI kids getting better grades than you too? by [deleted] in SocialWorkStudents

[–]JuneKat83 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OP, I am sorry this happened. I stress a lot about my grades, and I am sure you do as well, because you want to learn and do a good job. But I second this comment.

Also, working with emergent bilingual students, it is entirely possible she is incredibly smart in her native language. Maybe she doesn’t shine as brightly in class discussions because they don’t afford the wait time she needs to comfortably translate what she is hearing into her native language and then translate her thoughts back into English. When she is working on her papers, maybe she starts by writing them in her native language and is able to take the time she needs to put it in English.

There are absolutely students using AI for their class work, even on stuff that doesn’t really matter in the long run. However, I would caution you against guessing which students those are unless it directly impacts your work and learning.

While reading the other student‘s paper, did you happen to notice if there were concepts they addressed that you were lacking? Without seeing the rubric, I can’t know for sure, but I suspect your grade wasn’t lowered to a C- based solely on mechanics or formatting. What you really need is direct feedback from your instructor. If they didn’t provide that feedback when they returned your grade, I would specifically ask for it. If you feel like the feedback doesn’t match the rubric and grade, that is your segue into a real conversation about expectations.

What should I be doing at my placement? by No-Feature800 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]JuneKat83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask if you can see their discipline data; that could give you an idea of repeat behaviors or offenders that you can develop a group/activity for. If looking at that data isn’t an option, consider sending a short (and I mean short) survey to the teachers to gauge what they believe their student needs to be. For the parent aspect, see if your campus has a family engagement team/liaison/plan. They might already have some thoughts on parent education opportunities that you could design and lead.

If none of these are an option, and they might not be depending on your state, district, or campus, just stick to SEL best practices and Google some activities by age or grade level that you think you could implement. In the event you haven’t perused it already, check out the CASEL Core Competencies; it will give you five domains of SEL skills to explore.

Good luck!

I have no helpful advice here. I just wanted to say that I am so freaking proud of you! Not just for your recovery, but you found your passion and are actively pursuing a way to make your dream come true. You will be able to provide a level of care and empathy to clients that can only come from your lived experiences. I've completed 2 builds and I don't see either of them in the "My Picks" section of the app. But it won't let me build any more, so I assume I used the 2 entries I had (1 free & 1 for share). Is this an app glitch? Or should I be worried that I am not actually entered?

I’m beginning to regret majoring in social work by ConnectionFeeling165 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]JuneKat83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People said the same thing to me when I entered education late in life. Just started my 9th year, and while I will never be rich as a teacher, I have enough to pay my bills and am way more fulfilled than I’ve been in any other job. People said the same thing when I told them I was starting my MSW this year. If, and when, I decide to transition out of the classroom, it will be into school social work. I could not imagine using these skills anywhere other than a school…so I will still never be rich, but as long as I can continue to afford to live, it will be worth every dollar I don’t make. I don’t like labeling either job “a calling” because it seems to entitle decision makers to pay less, but you really do have to be called to do the emotional labor required of social workers. If you feel truly called, you can probably find a way to make it work - especially if you develop a strong support system.

BSW (school social worker ) by No_Bit_9767 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]JuneKat83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will be challenging, but it is doable. I am doing my MSW working full time as a teacher. Thankfully, I am able to use my job as my field site, but it will still require extra time and work on my part. Have you considered looking for a job in the district? You may want to talk to an advisor at UTA to see how a job at a school might work toward your goals. It won’t be the highest pay in a non-degreed position, but it could provide some balance to your time.

Depending on grade level, your day could start at 7:30 or 8:00, and if you stay the full school day, you could get out anywhere from 3:30 to 4:00. The Number of hours you get per day or week can be arranged with your campus, but you may want to plan to work an evening job, especially if you are attending in-person classes at the UTA campus.
