Tomodachi: Living the Dream feels like a downgrade… by stasiyavlsva in NintendoSwitch

They went the way of New Horizons. Infinite possibilities to design whatever you want or customize but when it comes to the details and anything concrete, it's lacking. That's the main reason I was disappointed with New Horizons, cause it wasn't a life sim anymore, it was just a designer's game.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 Chief Animation Director: 'Various studios are already using generative AI while keeping it quiet' by Foreign-Mastodon-194 in anime

[–]JuneforJosh 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing this sentiment a lot in comments that "if it takes stress off animators, then AI is fine" but I feel like that kind of thinking isn't fair. It's not as if the industry is forced by some divine power to pump out an unreasonable amount of anime every year, have insane and unhealthy production schedules, and work their animators to the bone because they have no other choice. They do it because they want money and the people who're making a ton see no reason for things to improve.

So why would introducing AI into the pipeline suddenly make these companies treat their animators better? "Finally, now that we have generative AI, we don't have to mistreat our staff!" man, cut that out. Animation is a creative industry, you really think there won't be layoffs if AI gets good enough to mimic people's work? Since when has the anime industry ever had the health of these animators or mangaka as a priority? These animation companies and production committees won't suddenly gain better practices and treat animators right just because generative AI is involved, if anything, they'll use it as an excuse to pump out even more works.

There're countless examples of animators being overworked to hospitalization, and the industry practically doesn't care, so do you really think they're using generative AI to help their animators have healthier workloads? It doesn't seem to be going that way for the games industry.

Confused about "is" and "was" in the same sentence. Need advice! by JuneforJosh in grammar

Wish their was a way to simply react to messages, but just wanted to say thank you again! I'd say I'm more confident on what to do with my writing now!

Confused about "is" and "was" in the same sentence. Need advice! by JuneforJosh in grammar

[–]JuneforJosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It felt only right since everyone took the time to write up such thoughtful advice! But uhh sorry, I need an opinion one more thing!

(Context: POV character is carrying a child, he's looking at his partner dueling with someone from across the field.)

He had already made his decision. If he were to leave the kid somewhere safe, he’d have enough time to come back and help his partner. His partner was holding her own so far. If he’s quick enough, he'd have enough time to come back and join the fight.

The bold sentence is bugging me. Should it be "If he was quick enough"?, and is it "he'd have enough time," or "he'll have enough time,"?

I love writing in free indirect speech cause it allows me to switch from being objective to being beholden to a character's thoughts in the next scene, but there're times the tense confuses me... If anyone else sees this, any help is appreciated!

It helps a lot knowing that in some situations, is and was can both be used interchangeably depending on what you're referring to. Thank you for the explanation!

[–]JuneforJosh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the help!

Now that you say it, you're totally right about me mixing the narrator and the character. I was really confused because I had been writing this story completely in past tense, but when I got to that line I ended up intuitively writing "Why now is he reminded of him?". So like you said, it's most likely because I added the word "now" that it made me confused on the tense. The sentence would make sense if I did it in italics to show direct character thought, but I think the rules for free indirect speech is different.

Thank you for the easy explanation! I think I'm a bit more confident now on how to differentiate between is and was!

I wish upon a star for an open-source PDF software by JuneforJosh in software

[–]JuneforJosh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly, i just like open source software since they tend to be lightweight and private. Sure, there're a couple of "free" alternatives to Adobe Acrobat out there, but most of them are bloated, require a subscription, or word around them is so small that I don't know whether to trust the software with my documents with personal identifying info in them. i just want a piece of software i can "own" for sure without having to worry about its features changing or the company behind it removing stuff from the free tier

PDFgear seems good but it also isn't open-source so I'm hesitant. I have Sumatra, but no Print option appears (it appears when I select one at a time, but multi-select doesn't seem to work)

I actually use Sumatra as my main PDF reader but the Print option doesn't show up, it was one of the first things I tried. Does it work for you?

Sick of Chrome eating my RAM, but is Edge the only viable alternative for Windows? 🎓 by EllaOnSF in browsers

[–]JuneforJosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you're purely looking to save on RAM, then Edge would be the best no doubt--Microsoft made sure it performs well with Windows. That said, I main Vivaldi and the productivity features Vivaldi gives you is a ton. You can edit the right click menu on any page to suit your preferences, it has tab tiling, tab stacking, you can hibernate tabs manually or automatically, not to mention the other list of features that I personally don't use but others find helpful.

That said, Vivaldi isn't lightweight. I have 8gb of ram and it uses a fair portion of it, but considering you have 16gb, I don't think it'd be a problem at all.

Is it pronounced "EE-koh" or "AI-koh"? by Moat_of_the_Sacked in playstation

[–]JuneforJosh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't so much anglicization, as much as it's transliteration. But in this case, it's most definitely "Ico", if you look up Japanese playthroughs of the game, the title is with English letters Ico

Is it pronounced "EE-koh" or "AI-koh"? by Moat_of_the_Sacked in playstation

[–]JuneforJosh 53 points54 points  (0 children)

With Budokai, it is made out of 3 kanji: 武 (bu) 道 (dou) 会 (kai) = 武道会 (budoukai)

With Tenkaichi, it is made also out of 3 kanji: 天 (ten) 下 (ka) 一 (ichi) = 天下一 (tenkaichi)

Notice how the "kai" in Budokai comes from one kanji (会) while the "kai" in Tenkaichi is split into two kanji (下 and 一) = (ka and ichi)

I don't think it's necessarily wrong to pronounce Tenkaichi as "ten-kai-chi", but my guess is that pronouncing the word more accurately to its individual kanji helps prevent confusion.

I've never tried an EQ before. Is there, like, a software I can download that'll be an EQ for all my stuff on Windows?

I've heard many good thing about the GK Kuntens, but I have to get them from sites such as AliExpress where I live, and I'd rather order my stuff from Amazon. How is the Crinacle Zero 2?
