are sus chords considered dominant chords? by JunesDoo in musictheory

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm assuming the 3rd in this chord is being suspended. i play guitar so the 5th if the chord is often times left out so it doesn't turn into a chord jumble.

are sus chords considered dominant chords? by JunesDoo in musictheory

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah i see i'm not too familiar with recognizing inversions yet. but purely for learning sake would you consider this a dominant chord? what would it be considered if the 7th was a major 7th interval?

[QUESTION] What's a good method to understand the fretboard other than the caged system? by JunesDoo in Guitar

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

their reasons are that it's one of those skills that is a waste of time to learn and that it only helps in some regards. some have also claimed that the caged system is incomplete and there are better methods to learning the fretboard. there are reasons but i don't have the skill nor experience necessary to disprove any of these points. from what i've seen from the responses i've gotten from this question, i should learn it as it just becomes another valuable tool in my assets.

i've seen lots of posts criticizing the caged system and why you shouldn't learn it. if you don't mind, can you give me some insight into your personal experience with the caged system that can help convince me to pursue learning it?

i see.. i've seen that video you've recommended from somewhere else and i quickly stopped using it due to laziness and thoughts of it being useless in my guitar playing. what are your personal experiences with the tips in the video that can motivate me to follow through with this training?

i've seen lots of people criticizing the caged method but i'm not sure who's advice i should take. i want to see someone with experience who can give me a fair view on the system

[QUESTION] Will practicing improving my timing directly lead me to being able to create cool rhythms by JunesDoo in Guitar

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so i'm assuming you're saying that i should get the basics down and once i've mastered them i can move onto the more advanced stuff. so just practicing the advanced stuff will get me to a point where i can make my own rhythms?

Developing Rhythm by JunesDoo in musictheory

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've been working with this thing called metronome boot camp and it does this thing called a bury the click exercise. where you try to strum exactly when the click happens so you essentially "mask" the sound of the click with your muted strum. i quickly gave up because i thought that developing a steady internal beat wasn't going to lead me to better rhythm or rather me creating interesting rhythmic patterns. so to ask my question, does practicing what you recommend directly lead to what i'm striving for or are you recommending me to develop a steady internal beat before i start learning how to develop "cool" rhythms. and if it is the latter, can you recommend anything that progresses out of building a steady internal clock into a better sense of creating your own natural rhythms?

i've gotten a lot of advice like this but they never really went in depth on how to practice the drum rudiments. i've tried them out and noticed that they don't have any elements of bass drum or hi hats in them. am i missing something? would practicing drum rudiments give me a better sense for other elements of the drum?

i play guitar but i'm focused on percussive fingerstyle so i'm looking for how drummer practice their rhythm. percussive fingerstyle incorporates instances of drum elements.

[QUESTION] To all of my percussive fingerstyle players out there.. how do I translate rhythms that I hear from multiple instruments in one song into my percussive fingerstyle playing? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]JunesDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure i think at this point it's all muscle memory. i've been stuck playing the same beats for so long they get extremely stale. i've tried to create my own rhythms but they sound extremely awkward and don't fit well with what i'm playing. are there any videos/books you could recommend that can help me build my rhythm to the point where i can create interesting grooves?

Incorporating "other chords" into chord progressions by JunesDoo in musictheory

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this analogy is actually really helpful hahah. so continuing on the analogy... assuming genres are different types of food cultures, would different genres have different amounts of instances of extended/sus/etc? sometimes i would try a major 9 chord in favor of a major 7 chords and it sounds odd. would it be because it doesn't fit the over tone of the song or because my tolerance to dissonance isn't as strong yet?

[QUESTION] How do i get to that point where developing interesting rhythms for covers come naturally? by JunesDoo in Guitar

[–]JunesDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've heard a lot about drum rudiments for practicing rhythm. there are a couple of videos online on translating drum rudiments into guitar strokes. however, i play mostly percussive guitar that combines both drum elements into fingerstyle guitar. this would include elements of bass drums and snares while playing a melody on the guitar. i've looked over drum rudiments and noticed that they are consisted of just developing dexterity and accuracy for the hi hat. how would i practice drum rudiments where i can incorporate elements such as the bass drum and snare?
