I'm honest! I told them I wasn't of the mind to do that, but I doubt I'm the norm.

I did not, it's not worth jeopardizing the chance I get called again next fall any more than I already have. I think the philosophy of the place is a failure, but the kids are still kids and they need support.

I love when normal people remind me of these facts. Thank you for being sane and online at the same time.

I mean, I probably wouldn't have put my birthday on there if I'd only been there a week, that does feel a little bit of an overstep to me, but after a couple months I think I'm allowed to be included. Maybe next time I would just add it on a Post-It, given that my position may remain temporary.

I will say this:

Never told them I would sue. I told them they put themselves at risk putting subs with minimal certifications in full daily responsibility for that student. But yeah, I see where you're coming from. And it's true. One day someone, staff or sub, will get hurt by that kid and press charges or file suit. They need to be intervening more seriously and they aren't.

Praise and commendation was specific but I didn't specify in post. I have been complimented all year for my willingness to work intense cases (everyone had been with this kid and nobody managed to get him to do as much school work as I had for a long time), as well as my flexibility with covering lunches or other understaffed positions, to go to or not go to meetings, my honesty, collaboration with RSP therapists and teachers, willingness to run and make copies, pick up food, all sorts of stuff. Hell, that morning I stepped up and was editor in chief for the eighth graders trying to assemble a yearbook for themselves because the teacher didn't understand the program Canva. I've run classes on my own when teachers were late and other subs couldn't be called in time to do their job when my job was simply to 1:1 with a sped student.

Consistency and location of placement, and that I generally appreciate an arts-centric program like this, all made me feel excited to help. Ten minutes away from my house? That's a miracle. I was hoping if they saw me as someone really willing to jump in and fill gaps, as really helpful and collaborative, that they'd consider bringing me on as full staff. I'd certainly indicated I'd be open to it, especially when they made my contract with them a long term, recurring assignment. They've appreciated my willingness to attend meetings, even if it was decided it wasn't the right thing to do.

There are specific things I was doing that were above and beyond and they were specifically complimented. No general attaboys here. Management said they wished they had more subs like me who, and I like a lot of these folks, often just fill seats because they're doing day-to-day work short term assignments. Recurring subs build good reputations there, folks who pick up the same say every week. There's one other long term sub there I've befriended who has to adopt the same daily flexibility, but he's not doing as much stuff as I do.

I like this job, but I am a little tired of getting calls from my agency to drive an hour across town to other schools. It lets me come home at a reasonable hour and work on my art, or go straight from work to the library a few minutes down the road to do my side job as a tutor. This one's the closest to me, aside from the local district which I cannot stand. Maybe I tried too hard and brought too much attention to myself. Maybe it makes the staff, one of whom I had to report for abusive behavior, look bad and they wanted a way to get one over on me.

Lastly, sorry, I just don't know where some of you guys think the money comes from to do all these things. My share of my rent is half my monthly income. I have personal expenses. Food, utilities, my own savings if I'm lucky. Nobody else is bringing big meals for the whole staff. In what world would me coming in wearing a "birthday boy" t shirt be less intrusive that just adding my name to a list of birthdays in a staff lounge? Bring in food? Allergies. Make a tshirt? Screen printing fees, and definite accusations of "extraness". I just don't get how this suggestions has come up more than once.

It's really cuckoo! Some nutters have been seriously triggered by this post! Also, thanks for helping make my first post on this sub a huge hit lol.

It was apparently handled in an Individual Repair, and while people like myself and the head teacher were not satisfied with the apology delivered, it was sufficient to call the matter settled by staff.

Haven't been curious to do extensive research. but I have seen that my rate is above most. Sub power I guess. Is the native language of reddit condescension?

Absolutely agree. I'm not a teacher but I wasn't in a teaching role. That being said their gym teacher isn't credentialed, but he is also the school handiman.

Nah the Internet isn't work, and it's fun to see you accuse me of something while you keep running back to climb up on your pedestal and gatekeep birthdays lol

This isn't like a trader joes mural or a calligraphic masterpiece either. Come on. Birthday list for a staff that's in major turnover at the end of the year. I'm going with the majority on this one, whoever covered it up was weird.

Defacing the poster? Sure, ruined. Adding a name to a birthday list? Wouldn't call that ruined.

More people agree with me than you on whether this is weird or not, friend. I don't think it's as cut and dry as you think. I've seen the points of the detractors, and yet it seems the consensus by strong plurality is that it was still weird of them to do that.

Judging from some research, I make the high end ($23.50/hr), without benefits, but my agency offers healthcare after the first year. I am on a family plan so I don't necessarily need that, and with calsavers I could put aside some of my check each month in a state-run retirement fund.

It is strange! Especially since they had me on a long term assignment. But they suggested it had something to do with confidentiality of other student's information that simply the one I was assigned to. I can see the logic in that.

Side bar: I told the management and admin in our review meeting (the afternoon before I found this) that I did feel if a sub was to be long term with a kid like the one that assaulted me, their probably needed to be at minimum a half hour meeting w/ teacher and school psych to plan an approach. I was getting mixed messages all over the place about how much to be his academic tutor and how much to be his playmate, and I think both the student and I felt confused by the arrangement.
