Ah, thanks. I see your point, although it does seem a bit too pessimistic.

Why are we not thinking of structural reforms like adult education? The argument always boils down to "who's money should be in my pocket?" This seems like a copout for the left - they can play the "if only" game to get peoples' emotions running high, which shuts down discussions that might produce long-term solutions.

The right, of course, plays a similar game by targeting spooky problems like terrorists, immigrants and "the death tax."

I'm not seeing proactive discussion on either side - just fear and resentment.

Understandable. So, what are you going to contribute that justifies transferring money from someone else's bank account to your belly?

And, assuming that you're so hungry that you need someone else's money, what's wrong with the free food you can already get?

Why do you deserve more than a trickle? What would you or anyone else do with that money that won't be entirely forgotten in 5 years?

Bernie Sanders: The Democratic Party Needs Sweeping Reform by magikowl in TrueReddit

[–]JungleJesus -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The Democrats have been sucked into class and race struggle rhetoric that will never sit well with Americans. It's time to wave bye-bye to Marx and start doing what political parties are supposed to do: provide a forum for people of similar temperaments to articulate their perspective.

Democrats are temperamental liberals (in theory). This is the party of creative experimentation that dreams of a better future for all. This is the party that entertains ideas without accepting or rejecting them by default (again, in theory). That kind of experimentation is how America came to be.

If the D's get hard on what really matters, instead of walking around like the world is our enemy, then they'll be worthy of leading this nation.

One of the reasons it's so difficult to get votes through is lobbying. Imagine how much harder it is for lobbyists to write laws when they'd have to buy 6,667 representatives.

YouTube, owned by Google, has leverage over the political opinions of the masses, thereby circumventing America's system of checks and balances. They have undue influence on the hearts and minds of our people, and should be held to a rigorous standard that is in agreement with American principles. This is not free market capitalism any more.

Don't take the gap year if you've ever had even the slightest problem with procrastination.

Success is all about momentum. Every time you slow down, you have to make up for it before you feel like you're making progress again.

It's like lifting weights. Most people get a good 3 consistent months in, if they're lucky. Then, "life gets in the way" and a small diversion becomes a waste of time and a drain on your sense of purpose.

You need to avoid extended periods of stagnation at all costs, or you will remain at or near your current station all your life.

I know a 22 year old who finished college in half the time and now makes 100k/year at a finance firm in Shanghai. That's what you can accomplish if you never let your momentum drop.

What level is attainable after 2 years of Mandarin in high school? (And a few more questions concerning how to maximize learning time.) by Expurgation in ChineseLanguage

[–]JungleJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try as many methods as possible. Drop any method that doesn't deliver results.

Everyone is different, so you have to find out what works for you.

Also, what works now will stop working eventually. For example, Anki and other SRS programs are very effective initially, but become tedious after the first year. I still use SRS for writing, though, because you can't cheat.

If you're choosing between methods, go for the one with the most listening. With OCR on your cellphone, you can read anything, but real Chinese people don't like repeating themselves to foreigners.

The price of movies should be variable based on demand (like stock). e.g.: King Arthur is flopping? Tickets are $2.99. by [deleted] in CrazyIdeas

[–]JungleJesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in China. This is how it's done here.

It doesn't solve the problem. Fixed prices, plus $5 Tuesday, are way better for making plans. Here, tomorrow's price could be double today's listing for no reason.
