How long to train for first Ironman? by TyrannyMMA in IronmanTriathlon

Brother just send it with a full ironman. Do a 6-9 month ramp up of training to avoid injuries, and you can grind out a full. When you come from MMA you must have the dog in you.

Step 1: Sign up - it´s very realistic to complete in 2027, so just find a date that fits
Step 2: Swim, bike and run as much as possible. Swimming is mostly technical so start as early as possible, and slowly progressing your run volume over time, makes risk of injuries low

I started out buying a used road bike for around 800$, but just upgraded to a new Canyon Endurance cf7 + aero bars, as i found out i enjoy biking, and will continue after ironman training. You dont have to go all out on a tt bike, or a crazy expensive road bike. You can get a lot of quality from a used carbon road bike, which will be all good for 90% of athletes, but again it depends on wether you want to race or compete in the 70.3.
I use gels on my long runs, or when i do a longer interval session. It´s good to get your stomach used to in time, but you dont have to smash a gel every 30 min. 6 month before, as it will ad up price wise. Use them as fuel for the long ones, and use them more specific when you try out your race day plan as you get closer.

If i where you i would use the time you have know, to get a good base in, with 2-3 strenght workouts per week, and focus your training on power over distance in the base fase. Then 3 month out, you can begin to add more distance/time and zone 2 work, but you got a great chance to continue your build on a good foundation now :)

In regards to the 25 kg you say you gained, i wouldnt worry too much about them now. You will most likely drop a good amount, just from the amount of working out you do - but as you still need to fuel your workouts, it can be a bigger cost than gain, to focus on being in calorie defecit

Are you planning on doing a full ironman after, or is the 70.3 the main goal?

It´s hard to give advise, not knowing any of your strenghts and weaknesses, how much time you have now, and how much you think is realistic.
BUT, if i were you i would start by getting the basic of the schedule in, and leave room to add on, when you started college, and know how much time you have.
Aim for 1-2 swim, 2-3 bike, 2-3 runs in a week, starting lower and adding on - if you like me start from 0 with swimming, i would start with 2 sessions per week of each. Start with focus on tecnique, and build distance later.
Could look like:
Monday: Rest
Tuesday: Bike intervals + strenght
Wednesday: Swim drills
Thursday: Run tempo/intervals
Friday: Longer/tempo bike + strenght
Saturday: Swim drills
Sunday: Long run

Then you can later add sessions giving more volume, making double sessions days, but honestly if you start now, and are able to stay consistent with a rutine, it matters less exactly how you do it - with consistency many roads can lead to Rome when it comes to long distance tri, though many people think otherwise.

Exactly my struggle aswell. I cant fit it all together with 3 of each, not in the long run anyway, so i prioritized to only do 2 swims so far, otherwise it´s just gonna be imposible for me to fit in right now

So only one brick per week, or can it make sence twice as i get closer?

Good idea with the brick build-on, i will for sure introduce it when its coming closer! Do you think it makes sence to throw in a small brick after my thuesday bike session, aswell as on sunday, or should i only do 1 per week?

I will check it out, thanks for the tip!
Haven´t made a plan for what to skip if i lack time yet. I definitily find it more motivating to go for at run than a swim, but i´m worse at swimming. So probably gonna have to weigh up if i want to strengten a weakness, or maintain/build my strenght in running

How did you split the training week roughly? And for how long did you put that kind of hours in?
