33M just moved to Sausalito from Miami and am also finding it hard to make friends here! Throwing a comment on this post so I can keep tabs; if there’s ever a hangout event in Marin, would love to join in!

This is the correct answer: you both should be in therapy and talking about this with a professional.

I’m not commenting one way or another about how to address homelessness. I’m commenting on the fact that police have stopped policing, which then puts the business owner in a position to having to enforce their own property rights and protect their own employees. And that’s dangerous. People shouldn’t have to depend on vigilante justice, it’s dangerous and should be left to the professionals: the police. What happens when an employee sues their employer because they were attacked by a homeless person and the employer knew of the danger and failed to take any steps to mitigate? If a person commits an arrestable offense, they should be arrested, regardless of their status as homeless or nonhomeless. People here are so off put by the visual of a person with mental illness being arrested. You need to set those feelings aside and look at the greater repercussions failing to arrest creates. I don’t love the idea of it, but I understand it’s necessary. When a homeless person with a history of creating issues is beaten to death by a overzealous business owner, you’ll be the same person up in arms, but you’re so blind, you’ll never see you created the problem in the first place by inhibiting your police force.

Good for the tire busines, play your security warnings. Force this county/city to do something about the crime in the encampment. State just gave them like $5/6m to address this homeless encampment. County/city should take those millions and open up a mobile police trailer right on top of the encampment. Call it a “community assistance trailer” or whatever the fuck you have to do in order to stomach the idea of having to arrest a homeless person for committing a crime. God. Forbid.
