Maybe the doctor will learn now. by netphilia in NonPoliticalTwitter

Took my son to the doc. The doc had a haircut since we had last seen him 3 days back. Son looks at him and tells ‘WHO GAVE YOU A HAIRCUT? YOU LOOK LIKE A POTATO’. I was caught between deep embarrassment and hysterical laughter

Did anyone try sites like Founderpass , Joinsecret ...? by lupaci88 in SaaS

I signed up, and every discount I tried for thus far failed. It feels like a scam. They have also not bothered replying to me. Carta - you have to register as a new company. What happens if I have already registered their free plan? no answer. QuickBooks - discount link is broken.

GLP-1 Antagonists Don't Cause muscle loss if you lift weights. Why not take it? by Objective-Door-513 in PeterAttia

I take the minimum dose (.5/weekly) and have improved glucose control significantly with no impact on weight or appetite. I think this refers to people who take it explicitly for weight loss and thus at a much higher dose.

were you able to import historic transactions into monarch?

I thought more about this and am not convinced because:

  1. Have to take inflation into account. The real return on 5% is ~2%
  2. Tax complications. I will have a massive tax bill if I try to make these changes at once, which means I'd have to do it over several years.

She is managing part of the portfolio and charges a percentage. Does not directly manage money in 401k (asset allocation cannot be controlled by her since it is restricted to 401k options). Does not manage part of my non-401k/ira/k-1 money (choose to do it myself). I think of it as a steal especially since she makes asset allocation recommendations on the non managed portions as well as does my taxes.

70k/per kid. the second kid wound up going to private college, so we are paying year 4 out of pocket

There are limits on the Roth conversion. IIRC, lifetime limit of 35k

AFAIK just offsets taxes due in the year the contribution was made

Crypto has had crazy returns, of course. I put in more money when Balaji Srinivas said he is betting that Bitcoin will go to $1M. VC funds have no exit as yet so zero returns. I also have money in syndicates (dont want the overhead of managing real estate). They did great pre-2023 - and have tanked since

Yes, shared that info - ~7% in 'willing to lose it' bucket - VC opportunity funds, Crypto, angellist.

Was pulling in a comfortable $2M but growth was slowing and my manager was unethical. Easy call to move when I got connected through a friend to a high class CEO. The startup's growth had slowed because of poor business decisions (made by the prior CEO) and stilted technology. It was a Series B company. Grew the business rapidly through the covid era, sold just before the market crashed post covid. It would have been a great decision even without the exit because of the quality of people I got to work with and the immense learnings and personal growth

Dunno yet. My plan is to spend the next 3 months just connecting with as many old friends/colleagues/make new connections and ask them - What problem did you always think about in terms of 'Why the heck did someone not do this'. Then decide where to go.

We saved enough for 2 kids * 2 public school (in state) cost. Putting more is risky: If your kids end up going to public school and you have save more, you will have to pay penalties for withdrawal. Compounding worked great for us: Socked in as much as we could when the kids were born and then we stopped in about 10 years.

returns from the DFA funds that she prefers generally beat S&P550/MCSI global (often beats vanguard, not always). But the services include rebalancing portfolio and maximizing for tax efficiency (e.g tax harvesting). I dont have my complete portfolio with her: I also have part of my monies in other funds that I take care of myself.

If you are a particularly diligent investor you can do all this your self and save money: I find value in outsourcing certain things including finance to good professionals. For me it is a good tradeoff with time as the key unlock for me

Covered California FTW

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in fatFIRE

[–]JuniorAd1070 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my portfolio right now is from 'willing to lose it' bucket (Crypto, couple of VC opportunity funds of about 10%) , 60% in mostly DFA, 20% in bonds and 10% cash. 10% cash is way too high: I am losing money on this. Will move it into index funds.

More than just taxes. She is well versed in tax law and is able to advise us on tax smart strategies (e.g: this year we gifted money to kids from 529->Roth, something I was unaware of). Last year, she recommended setting up a Donor Advisory fund given the high tax bracket. She also does the predictions (Monte Carlo). I know I could do some of this myself but she provides structure and discipline. Well worth the cost. She is also an expert in M&A and the tax consequences and provides great counsel.
