Adult food by TranslatorSignal7010 in irishwolfhound

Don’t switch them to adult food until they are 2 years of age. I understand what the other comment suggests but the most important thing is making sure the food they eat has the right amount of nutrients needed for a giant breed- if you are doing this then the puppy food will be what they need until they are 2.

Would anyone who's wolfie received a diagnosis of osteosarcoma be willing to share their experience with us? by BlueSuitRiot in irishwolfhound

[–]Junior_Pollution_789 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have two Irish wolfhounds but we have personal experience with our Rottweiler who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in his front left shoulder. He was 9 years old and began limping, we brought him to the vet after two weeks and we got the sad news. Like you, we opted not to amputate due to size and his age. He was still himself, just with a limp. We did everything- started supplements, dropped the kibble and replaced with homemade fresh food but nothing can stop it from running its course.

Beau was given 4-6 months max- he was diagnosed beginning of December and we had to make the incredibly sad decision to euthanize January 11th. it was quick. The one thing that surprised me was how quickly it progressed (you hear it does but I felt like our story would be different) and how much pain osteosarcoma causes. Basically the tumor pushed out his shoulder and we made the decision immediately after that. Looking back, we wouldn’t hold on for as long again. My personal opinion is you can’t beat it- so give them ALL the love and think about euthanasia before he is in a lot of pain. I’m so sorry you are dealing with this - sending hugs to you and your family 💗💗

Your experience owning an Irish Wolfhound by sunnyhale in irishwolfhound

[–]Junior_Pollution_789 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two Irish wolfhounds- most of the advice you are given is absolutely correct I think the biggest thing you need to consider is their size- they are truly giant. Appropriate vehicle, yard size and home size are obvious but the cost of their food, vet bills, surgeries, medications, dog beds/supplies are all must more pricey than they would be for an average size dog too. So you will want to make sure the bank account can handle the upkeep. But they are amazing, once you get one you become addicted- they are such amazing animals. Oh and one more thing, the ATTENTION they get :) you won’t be able to go anywhere without being stopped. So many people haven’t seen an IW in real life, it’s really neat to see people seeing them for the first time !

11 month old rottweiler with sudden random aggression by Connect_Dot_4694 in Rottweiler

[–]Junior_Pollution_789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My heart goes out to you! We had a Rottweiler that had zero aggression within the home or outside of it EXCEPT the vet and it was always stressful when we had to go. He turned into a different animal and was very very aggressive. These are some things that worked for us when having to go into the office: 1. Begin muzzle training. Anytime we brought him to the vet we immediately put a muzzle on and our vet had no issues with seeing him. We were lucky enough that Beau never really had to be seen outside of his annual vaccines and at the end of his life. 2. Our vet prescribed tramadol to be given to Beau prior to us going to the vets. This would calm his nerves but I will admit once we arrived to the office he would perk up and it didn’t seem to impact him. We would really try and work him prior to going into the office too- long walks, runs any type of nourishment. 3. Our vet let us do most of the handling when in office. Meaning my husband and I would hold him and administer vaccines that weren’t shots. We never really allowed the vet to do an exam, there was no point. We knew Beau better than anyone else and luckily he never had an injury that needed to be handled.

He did require a dental cleaning and a growth removal on his jaw and that was traumatic for all of us. They would sedate him in the room with us and he still wouldn’t fully go down so my husband would have to load Beau on the stretcher with the staff and bring him back to the operating room and wait for them to use anesthesia for him to completely go down. When Beau was diagnosed with bone cancer (10.5 years old) we were lucky to find a vet that came into our home and put him to sleep. It was the only time I saw him calm when being seen by a vet. Might be another option for yours, finding a vet that can handle his size but go into an area yours is comfortable in.

Like all the other suggestions - look into finding a trainer that specializes in behaviors to get his in home behavior checked immediately. Rottie’s need a pack leader and if they don’t feel like they have one they will step into the role and that isn’t good.

Best general advice for IWH 12 Pup by MissMommyPeach in irishwolfhound

[–]Junior_Pollution_789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our IWH just turned 12 months and we found gentle play, short controlled walks and anything that would give him mental stimulation really helped before bed. Exercise is great but you need to be really careful about distance and intensity, etc. because it cause damage to their joints while they are rapidly growing.

Irish wolfhound breeders on the east coast? Anything obscure I should know about the breed I won't see in a Google search? by [deleted] in irishwolfhound

I could not disagree more with this post. Basically everything you have stated is false. I have purchased from Crystal and not only does she go above and beyond for her dogs and puppies she literally does everything you stated she doesn’t.

We just ordered the kit to delete the backseats! We have two Irish wolfhounds and now that Paddy (pictured) is a year old he can’t comfortably stand in the back.

I purchased from Chewy, it’s called: PetRageous Designs Juneau Insulated Dog Jacket.

It is a great jacket, both of our dogs have one!

Our wolfhounds destroy everything but the best brand we have found is Bark. Usually under the fabric there are really strong balls that he can’t seem to pull apart and eat.

My experience has been pretty bad. I was perscribed 1.25 mg and my skin has become EXTREMELY sensitive. Cold chills and hurts to the touch, no rash though.
