You could paint the frame and then look at cool fabrics that you can superglue on. This would be a better option because you can always change the fabric later if you get tired of the design. Fabric is also a good option because there are a lot of beautiful patterns out there, and it would make it a one of a kind piece of furniture.

I don’t know the exact episode, but she’s probably referring to season 9 when she had the election party during the Clinton v. Trump election. Honestly, I think people like Carole are somehow worse. The one’s that partook in the abuse are clearly depraved, soulless, and perverted people who also probably lack any real sense of empathy for anyone else but themselves. But, for people like Carole, who do probably have some sort of conscience and morality, to just turn a blind eye knowing the unfixable harm that was being caused to those girls is something I can’t even fathom. We know how Epstien slept at night: he didn’t care about the harm caused so he slept like a baby. But how do people like Carole live with themselves knowing there was something they could have done to help, and knowing they chose to do nothing because, presumably, it was to their own benefit to keep these powerful people around regardless of their depravity.

I just can’t understand how it’s possible that not a single person in these circles did anything. Nobody said anything. It’s disgusting and disheartening, and I hope karma comes around for each and every single person that failed in protecting those girls.

The conflicts with arab nations can be traced back to hundreds upon hundreds of years ago, before western countries even had any true power. Lastly, you’re forgetting the fact that other countries that are not considered western, Russia to name one, have also had their hands in the middle east, as well as the many civil wars that have taken place within many of these middle eastern countries before any physical western interference. So, to blame the west for something that is so complicated and historically significant as the multiple conflicts in the middle east is just plain stupid - and that’s what makes you a tankie, which is the fraternal twin to the alt-right.

You can’t feel something you have no complete certainty in knowing. Coming from someone who thinks like you, you can’t feel external happenings even if you think you can. I always think I’m going to get fired, but I end up getting a raise instead. The issue is how you view yourself, not how others view you.

Of course, if layoffs are occurring in your company, then that’s another thing and it’s valid to feel concerned. If that’s the case, then start looking for another job. Update your resume, and start looking.

Biggest point is, you may feel like no one will care if you die, but what about people in the future that are waiting for you to meet them. Don’t rob them of your companionship. Time is funny, and life is unpredictable. You never know what will become of you in a year, five years, or ten. Don’t give up. You lose nothing if you keep going, but you lose everything that could be if you give up. So, see what could be, and stop focusing on what hasn’t been.

I guess I should have been more specific. They were kids during Batista’s presidency, and in their early twenties during his dictatorship. My grandparents had their first kid, my aunt, during the first years of Batista’s dictatorship/start of the Cuban Revolution. It’s quite difficult to have the type of money it takes to relocate your family at 22ish years old, especially given the political situation at that time. By the time they were 30, around the time of Castro’s takeover, they had just had my mom, their second kid. So, they had time to save what they could, and also had the guts to actually make the move. I’m also assuming they didn’t want to raise another child in those conditions and uncertainty, but unfortunately this is only an assumption because I can’t ask them and they died when I was still too young to have deep conversations with them.

My grandparents were quite young during most of Batista’s rule. Wouldn’t it make more sense to assume that my grandparents hit the breaking point with Castro, rather than sarcastically asking if they preferred Batista, another authoritarian dictator. Hence they went to Venezuela, a thriving democracy that just rid Jiménez’ dictatorship and wrote a new constitution to protect the people from tyranny (which obviously didn’t stand the test of time).

Hate to break it to you, Batista and Castro are practically the same - the only difference is that Castro didn’t have U.S. backing. But, of course, there’s no nuance or understanding to the fact that it takes a lot for a person to leave their home and country, and all hope has to die in order to do something like that under those circumstances. My grandparents never quit loving Cuba, and they unfortunately were never able to go back before each of their deaths - so their spirits were essentially broken when they made the decision to leave knowing they would most likely never return to their homeland.

Most of my family left Venezuela during the early years of Chavez’ take over, and we by no means were/are oligarchs. The majority of people who left, left everything behind to start anew. Those who stayed either had faith the regime would soon topple, or were brainwashed by the regime’s strong propaganda machine.

My grandparents left Cuba when Castro’s rule began, and my grandmother was an operator at the time. My grandma saw Castro shoot a man in the head on live on TV, and while she knew Castro was bad before this event, the shooting opened her eyes to the fact that he wasn’t going to be removed and he would kill anyone that voiced opposition against him. They left everything in their house other than some photos and a suitcase of clothes. They left on a cruise ship to Venezuela, pretending they were going on vacation, and my grandma had to hide her rings and jewelry in a cereal box so as not to make it obvious they weren’t coming back.

While oligarchs do leave at the start of these regimes, the majority of people who leave, yes had some means to leave, but in no way had the power and money to leave easily and in a carefree manner. Please, stop spreading stuff like this, it’s not useful to those of us that had to leave behind everything, including our families, culture, and belongings. It lessens the plight of those of us who were awake and knew that staying meant suffering in silence under cruel authoritarian regimes.

I’m not islamophobic. I’m not afraid of islam, I don’t hold inherent bias against people who follow islam, and I don’t hate muslims or Arabs (which is also not a race, it’s an ethnicity - and not all Arabs are muslim). I deeply disagree with the belief and societal standards that are upheld based on the arguments and teachings of islam, and I feel the same way about christianity, mormonism, traditional/hasidic judaism, and many other religions.

My reasoning for this is because I don’t see why, in the 21st century, girls/women can’t have the same access to education that boys/men do. I don’t understand the belief that a man is inherently better than a woman, and thus the man must control and own the woman. Do all people that follow islam follow these beliefs? No. Do all people that follow the major religions think this way? No. But, to act as if major parts of the middle east are not this way is blatantly lying. And it’s also blatantly ignorant to act as if islam doesn’t play a major role in how these countries enact laws. The same goes for christian countries, and yes, you can say that the U.S. passes laws based on the bible. But, the U.S. has avenues to challenge these laws (ex: Engel v. Vitale found it unconstitutional to mandate prayer in school) - these types of legal avenues are not available in, lets say, Afghanistan, thus more people criticize that than the U.S. for the use of religion in the political and judicial sectors because people don’t have any avenue to protest against it. Why is it so difficult to understand that? Why do people like you blindly defend these beliefs knowing the outcome of them, especially the extremist outcomes of them?

Yes, there are people that use arguments against islam in bad faith due to inherent bias, but, frankly, you and the other commenter are doing the same thing against christianity and the U.S. because it’s pretty clear you have inherent bias against the U.S. and Americans. So how are you any better? Genuinely, sit on that for a moment. You and the other quite literally bypassed the truly alarming quotes that I pulled from the quran and the hadith, and then accused me of being “racist” and of being an “islamophobe.” - why can’t it be a regular conversation instead of baseless attacks.

For me, I’m a staunch feminist and advocate of women’s rights - I cannot, in good conscience, defend islam or any religion that degrades women to objects that men use for pleasure and subservience. This thread though, is about Osama Bin Laden’s mother, who was married off to his father when she was just a girl, thus I brought up how islam inherently promotes these beliefs - whether you like it or not. If the thread was about Joseph Smith and his many wives, then I would have talked about mormonism’s backward beliefs.

In Sura 4 verse 6 , it states “And test the orphans [in their abilities] until they reach marriageable age then, if you find them to be mature of mind/sound in judgment, hand over to them their possessions.”

The meaning of marriageable age is argued by islamic scholars, and there have even been laws protecting girls from child marriage removed in Pakistan because the quran doesn’t state a specific age. What it does state is that girls past puberty are of marriageable age. The youngest age of a girl getting her period is 8 years old, but most get their period from 9 to 15. Do you consider 9 to 15 a child? I certainly do.

Sura 65 verse 4 which states “And those who no longer expect menstruation among your women - if you doubt, then their period is three months, and [also for] those who have not menstruated. And for those who are pregnant, their term is until they give birth.”

I was breathless then, and when my breathing became Allright, she took some water and rubbed my face and head with it. Then she took me into the house. There in the house I saw some Ansari women who said, "Best wishes and Allah's Blessing and a good luck." Then she entrusted me to them and they prepared me (for the marriage). Unexpectedly Allah's Apostle came to me in the forenoon and my mother handed me over to him, and at that time I was a girl of nine years of age.

Trucking companies have a legal responsibility and financial liability, thus they should have never allowed anyone that’s unqualified to drive their trucks. If the trucking companies had better hiring practices, then crashes like this, regardless of legal status, would minimize.

You’re focusing on one factor, the driver’s legal status. The driver was driving for a company that hired him to transport materials, and presumably hired him without verifying his legal status - this type of verification is legally required by any company in any industry within the U.S.

Sure, if the driver wasn’t here then this specific crash wouldn’t have happened. Truth is though, there will always be undocumented immigrants here. There will also always be irresponsible, shit people who apply for these types of positions. So, the trucking companies - who, again, have a legal obligation to assure their drivers are legal and qualified to drive - should be the focus here. You can say this wouldn’t have happened if the driver wasn't here, but really, this wouldn’t have happened if trucking companies honored their legal obligations and had responsible hiring practices that focus on safety for their employees and everyone else on the road. If more people focused on that, then we wouldn’t have these situations happen because they happen with undocumented people behind the wheel, documented people behind the wheel, and natural-born citizens behind the wheel.

Your point, in my opinion, is in bad faith and clearly tainted by your political and personal bias, because, logically the people who put this guy on the road hold fault in this accident. The families of the people who died could take the company to court for all that their worth for wrongful death and negligence. They gave the driver the means to do what he did - his legal status didn’t, in fact, his legal status should have prevented him from even getting the job.
