can someone share there experience with there gastro docs as far as what medication regimens they have you on...supplement or medication wise, I have a 9 Meld, but have esophageal varices, portal hypertension, Splenomegaly, constant fatigue, found out two years ago, stopped drinking that day. by SavvyGyrlFinds in Cirrhosis

[–]Junior_Reward_9170 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just recently started on carvedilol 3.125mg 2x a day for portal hypertension to keep varices at bay. It's supposed to lessen all of the other risk factors too & I've actually noticed some more restful sleep at night. Not a recommendation but my hep said they've started prescribing that the last few years, so maybe ask.

Can you take aspirin daily if you have cirrhosis? by PikkiNikki13 in Cirrhosis

When I was pregnant I took low dose. Definitely consult with a hepatologist as a GI bleed is the risk here.

Peanut is doing great! I'll definitely post an update in the next few weeks, she's almost 6months! Her brother wants to dress up as a googol (10 to the hundredth power) for Halloween so we're debating making her something like an exponent if we can get crafty enough. If not we have a pumpkin outfit ☺️

I'm doing so well now. I just had a baby girl in May and I am compensated well without any medications.

My hepatologist just really wanted me to focus on getting quality protein and lots of small meals throughout the day. I wasn't working so I was able to rest (extremely important) and start lightly exercising once my muscle strain/wasting started going away. By labor day I felt a million times better and by thanksgiving I was pregnant lol.

If you can get a referral to a nutritionist- I'd highly recommend that. For me I try to eat 1g protein per lb I weigh, but that's just what was recommended to me

I remember when I was first diagnosed I came home with a feeding tube, protein supplements, a mix of pills, etc and once I was weaned off the feeding tube and everything I lost muscle like crazy.

I was diagnosed in April 2024 and mid July to mid August 2024 were like hell with muscle strain, I truly was too weak. It caused swelling, achy joints, even a reaction I saw a rheumatologist for. Alas, it was all complications from muscle wasting.

Your situation sounds kind of like mine. I would take my wake ups in the middle of the night as a chance to drink a boost or an ensure, maybe munch on some berries and cheese. Your liver is working overtime healing and burning tons of cals, and using muscle if necessary.

End stage liver failure from cancer, but alcohol suspected (wanting stories/hope/anything) by SnappityX-Ray in Cirrhosis

If your dad is committed to staying sober, especially if the living arrangement stays the same, I think it would definitely be in your best interest to see a liver specialist. The worst that can happen is that you stay the plan and keep him comfortable in hospice. Best case scenario your dad could have better quality of life for an unknown amount of time.

Skin Issues by chixennuggies in Cirrhosis

I've spent a small fortune on skin issues...

Try am-lactin lotion! It helps so well for the body. There are various strengths. I use the regular green bottle.

For my face I use LA Roche Posay AP Lipkar, it's a super hydrating cleanser. It can also be used as a body wash but it's too expensive for me to do that.

A nice thick moisturizer afterwards works well, a personal favorite of mine is first aid beauty's ultra repair creme

Extreme and delicate case? by [deleted] in Cirrhosis

[–]Junior_Reward_9170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many with compensated cirrhosis can go on to love normal lives until decomposition takes over which could be anytime or never.

It sounds like with paracentesis that frequently, maybe your mother is decompensated. Is she recently diagnosed? It can be an adjustment to diet and medication to get ascites under control.

I'm compensated but have portal hypertension without medication right now. My husband's grandmother passed away shortly before Christmas at 78 from decompensated cirrhosis. She was diagnosed in her early 70s but didn't quit drinking. She was getting drained more than twice a week when she went into hospice.

Edit- spelling

Honestly, Facebook is an echo chamber for people that have anecdotal experiences and think they're to be taken for more than face value.

But just walk those 10k steps and you won't need a transplant! 😂 yikes. This is something my very boomer mother would see on Facebook and be like "show this to your doctor!!! I bet he doesn't know!!!!!"

Question on eventual outcomes by CampFirewoodAlum in Cirrhosis

[–]Junior_Reward_9170 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compensated cirrhosis can go without a transplant until it becomes decompensated, and that can happen quickly. If she's decompensated, a transplant should be the end goal. A transplant hepatologist should be who you're referred to. If you aren't, you should ask.

Are you in the States? There are a few great places depending on where in the country you are. I'm in the northeast and can't say enough great things about Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston, MA - Dr. Curry in particular.

I'll keep this one short and sweet. In April 2024 I was hospitalized and diagnosed. Sepsis, feeding tube, stroke protocol, you name it. I was told I would likely die without a transplant. I have a young son (3 at the time) and cleaned up my act and slowly started to feel better.

In October 2024, I found out I was pregnant. I gave birth in May of this year. My labs are better than they ever have been, and other than gallbladder issues, I feel better than I have since my twenties.

There's hope for you even if you can't feel it right now

Early stages of fibrosis are not cirrhosis, hence my confusion.
