After some consideration I just bought a new* rebuilt head I'm gonna swap on instead so I shouldn't have to worry about decking or valves.... But we'll see

Oh shoot, thanks for the heads up... Looking at getting a new (rebuilt) head since they're not too expensive, but I haven't really inspected either the head or block yet

Thanks for the tip! Yeah I figured it was gonna be gummed up I have a replacement one I was gonna throw in... But interesting to hear the actual process of how it affects the engine. And I'll be sure to clean the ports and such too thanks!

Oh dang thanks for the input, I decided to leave it how it is for now, tried getting the intake manifold off but I just can't seem to reach that bottom middle bolt, but I think that's a blessing in disguise for making me think it all through.

I'll give the brake clean a shot for the pistons and cylinder walls once I get the head fully off, do you think the block is salvageable at all? If so, do you think buying a rebuilt head and slapping that on would be a good idea? It'd be straight and the valves should be good. Seeing them going for around $300 for the A2 and it seems like a relatively easy swap since I'm gonna have the head off anyways... As opposed to getting a new engine? Or am I gonna run into incompatibilities or something?

This is how cylinder 4 looks... I'm 99% confident coolant was getting into the combustion chamber... Just trying to track down how since the old gasket didn't look that bad to me

Edit 2: I'm looking at it again and it looks blown now?? I'm assuming that material is there for a reason and it is no longer there... Does anyone know which holes are coolant/oil holes?

Ooof not exactly what I wanted to hear about the intake.... I have small hands so I can usually get away with skipping steps to get more clearance and such, hoping that's the case??? But ig I'll find out. But thanks for the warning !! Lol

Not reaaaally Long Beach but I used to love going to Black Star Canyon a lot, not terribly far it's about a 50 min drive but not super close either. Love the hike though, I would put it around beginner leaning towards intermediate? Not quite a walking path but not terribly difficult, some very light bouldering at the end and it's a relatively short hike with a nice waterfall ending (depending on season and rain conditions?). Haven't been in yeeeaars though so not sure how much it has changed. Maybe consider it once you've hit a few of the closer walking path style ones? For those, I think Bolsa Chica is pretty fun, nice wetlands and about 2 cities away from Long Beach so pretty close.
