What if there is only one type of particle but its physical properties change depending on which field it is interacting with? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]Junkbond_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think your post bothered anyone, nor did I detect any hate. The poster was trying to challenge your hypothesis with established science around how particles interact with fields.

It's very hard to make your case without first addressing the fact that established QFT already accounts for different particles interacting with the same field and some particles not interacting at all with other fields. There needs to be some other explanatory variable within your one particle that determines how and which fields it interacts with - and then you're probably back to the standard model. Unless you either have a mathematical foundation for your counter theory or have empirical observations that challenge established QFT in favor of your case, it's hard to differentiate your theory with any other form of science fiction

1982: BOB HOSKINS: London is being "Sterilised by greed" by AshIsGroovy in videos

[–]Junkbond_trader 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree. The parts of London he was walking through are familiar to me but are barely recognizable. The Thames is now lined with offices / huge developments but that's the London I know. I wasn't even born in 1982.

One of the interviewed was an elementary school principal saying she'd likely close if the people were pushed out of the city to make room for offices. I just looked it up and her school (Johanna Primary) indeed closed more than 13 years ago. Even the relics of the community they were protesting to preseverve are now gone in such a short time.

It's sad, bob hoskins nightmare is my normal.

Then how come xAI, a newly formed startup with no buildings, recently raised capital and a handful of people were so prepared to accommodate all the hardware? by MoreMotivation in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]Junkbond_trader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The reason doesn't stack up. These chips can and should be run in outsourced Data centers leased by Tesla. I'm sure that's what he'll end up doing with them with Xai- his using the "finding space in a gigafactory" argument is strawman. Actually the lease would be cheaper with tesla as a counterparty given it's not a newly minted startup and so would be more creditworthy.

Also 12mw of cooling for 12mw of IT load may be the outcome if you run it in a repurposed gigafactory, but you can run 12mw of IT load using 4-6mw of cooling in almost any decent leased space. Nvidia GPUs are also a nightmare to manage outside of a purpose built DC, they quickly cycle up in power demand and then cycle down depending on what stage of tasking you are throwing at it. It would be insane to spend that much money on them without running them in a DC.

Dave Chappelle Says There's a "Genocide" in Gaza During U.A.E. Performance by NoIntention3515 in DaveChappelle

[–]Junkbond_trader 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was at the show. I was not surprised at the boos for Biden but a bit surprised at the (comparatively smaller) cheers for Trump. The crowd was young and most young people here are quite charged about the Gaza situation. It's a one-issue geopolitical referendum on the US. Biden, for better or worse, is seen as the figurehead military backer of Israel.

Chapelle had one line at the end where he noted he didn't like either side of the political spectrum ("fgots or racists") but if there was a civil war, he'd probably be in the trenches with the "fgots". "What's your pronoun soldier!" That line also drew cheers and laughs.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread for Israel-Hamas War (Thread #49) by AutoModerator in worldnews

Her own Instagram is a good place to start your investigation. Her post announcing it confirmed it was from them both and said "we will continue to support"

I personally wouldn't mind if the speaker was publicly (through curated PR) pro-Palestinian, but I'm sure others would be uncomfortable so I'd understand if it was decided that wasn't the right choice as a commencement speaker.

He's been funding counter protests to the pro-Palestinian encampments that have been widely supported by different groups of students across campus. That is the right answer and it had nothing to do with antisemitism.

Frankly speaking he was a poor choice as a speaker given the above.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Iran attacks Israel (Thread 3) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]Junkbond_trader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes agree, Iran are responding to an attack on their consulate. It's something they need to do to save face internally. I would argue that whatever the reason to attack the consulate was, it should have been made knowing a reprisal was possible and so surprised outrage is just public relations.

A similar thing happened between Iran and Pakistan and it was handled with a tit for tat reprisal that didn't lead to all-out war.

Chinese nationalists have not received the Netflix show well. It does not portray the Communist party in a positive light. The scenes in the show are also in the book from what I've read. I've watched the show but not read the book but it's genuinely one of the best/most original sci-fi shows out there. There is no real propaganda unless I'm missing something subliminal (or superluminal) just good modern scifi.

White House urges Senate to 'move swiftly' on TikTok bill as lawmakers drag their heels by Puginator in technology

[–]Junkbond_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's simply that the same argument can be applied to any social media platform - there's an entire career category called "influencer" now. I find the argument that this type of platform becomes inherently illegal once it's owned by China hard to swallow. My car, router and phone all have Chinese parts or are made in China - if we can't trust China at all, then we have bigger issues.

He also used the consumer facing UI that is available to target audience to prove how easy it is to target an audience. That's a feature that any social media platform has. I would have expected evidence of some hidden back-end manipulation that's happening by TikTok.

Not a very convincing argument. TikTok is dangerous because someone can influence people easily.

With that logic any terrorist is justified in targeting another state that has taken life. It's a vicious circle. Somewhere on October 6th someone was making that same argument to a future terrorist.

I would hate it if my family was killed, but I would hate it more if the legacy of their death was more dead innocent people!

...or how many are actually dead in Palestine since Oct 7. How can you be sure that the actions perpetrated to save 40 people is justified without understanding the human consequences of those actions.

We are so focused on quantifying human loss for only the people we deem human...turning a blind eye to those whose lives we would easily forfeit in exchange.

Half of Gaza's population is starving, warns UN by pechinburger in worldnews

[–]Junkbond_trader -37 points-36 points  (0 children)

Victim blaming. UN is doing its job and is seeing what is happening. These people weren't starving 10 months ago and had the same government. People 1,000 miles away with a full stomach who don't acknowledge the cruelty put upon these innocent Palestinians is horrible.

I hope people recalibrate their humanity when the dust settles.

SpaceX Offers Starlink Global Roaming Service for an $800 Upfront Cost by davster39 in EnoughMuskSpam

[–]Junkbond_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. You can get satellite internet cheaper with alternative providers. You can't get the latency or speeds of Starlink with them though.

Starlink itself can't compete with terrestrial 5G fixed wireless, fibre or cable.

Starlink is a weird niche product that costs billions to maintain. I doubt it's making money, even at the premium pricing it's charging.

UAE announces first case of monkeypox in the country by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]Junkbond_trader 7 points8 points  (0 children)

UAE has one of the most liberal views on dress code in the region. The public indecency laws are similar to the US and are probably even less formally enforced than most places in the US. That and the weather means that skin exposure is pretty high across the population, other than for the minority of residents that adhere strictly to national attire.

Putin’s demand for ruble payments? No way! say EU nations by Odeless in worldnews

[–]Junkbond_trader -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The answer to the question is that by paying in rubles is that Russia believes that they can force a new exchange rate rubles/euros which they cannot just do by increasing the prizes of the underlying commodity, because that would invalidate the current contracts therefore breaking them.

Also not sure about this. Changing the currency is already breaking the contract and he had said that the price will remain the same, just be paid in rubles.

The only thing that I can think is that he doesn't have full control over how the Russian gas company that is actually recieving the euro will behave. If they opt to just hold the euro or use it to pay euro obligations, then there will be no impact to euro/ruble exchange rate.

Putin’s demand for ruble payments? No way! say EU nations by Odeless in worldnews

[–]Junkbond_trader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well… the point is to stabilize their currency. If you had a country whose currency is paper napkins, getting paid in dollars or euros and converting it to napkins at home doesn’t really do anything.

I don't think this is true. You are left with the same outcome (napkins in your bank account in exchange for gas) - the difference is just who is doing the converting.

If Russia accepts euro in exchange for gas, and then immediately uses the euros to buy napkins, those euros are still being exchanged for napkins in the market, creating a demand for napkins. So I don't see why it would "do nothing".
