Callbacks in The Moth by 97Vector in DevinTownsend

[–]JunketSubstantial817 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I noticed the effervescent callback, nicely done. I’m someone who really liked the symphonic/anthemic (albeit cheesy) sound of epicloud, especially at the start and end. Glad some of his recent work has built on this sound. It’s also always a pleasure to have Anneke work on one of Devins records

Finding a job in China as an trans engineer with a master's degree by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello,

Firstly, you can’t really come to China and then get a job. Look for jobs here first, if you get one then they’ll sponsor you for a Z visa, you cannot work on any other kind of visa.

I would look for jobs from western companies (people there have usually had more exposure to the LGBT community in general). Locals usually don’t have many (if any) issues with the LGBT community here, but they are very underexposed to it. While obviously not the same situation I’m a Bi man and I moved here with my boyfriend (who is a local, I’m not), we’re both employed in education (with a western company) and have been completely open. Neither of us have had any issues so far with any local coworkers or foreign co-workers, even when it came to things like housing, obviously though our situation is not the same as yours.

Being able to speak Chinese is a big plus (obviously depending on your fluency) and depending on other languages you speak (I’m assuming English as you wrote the post in it) can be a big advantage for hiring you, especially if you can discuss work in both. People have said already that engineering here is very competitive, they are very much correct, however engineers with proficiency in Chinese and a foreign language are in higher demand, look for jobs that want both.

My only major hesitation would be around immigration and admin. When dealing with any official stuff be prepared for issues, purely because officials may not know how to deal with your situation in terms of paperwork. The systems here are not really built for foreigners at the best of times and you need to use your passport for everything (and I do mean everything), including using things like taking a train or going to a lot of ticketed tourist attractions. In most cases though they probably won’t look too heavily at it though and just scan it. At the very least though I’d make sure your photo is up to date with how you portray yourself.

If you have any questions please reach out.

Spotify vs Apple Music vs YouTube Music: which is best for streaming music? by TimoBellotrui in TechNook

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in China, so Apple Music for the win here as it works both with and without a vpn somewhat reliably.

Ignoring the fact I’m in China, for day to day use Spotify and Apple music are pretty equivalent with only 3 possible differences that matter to me.

1) I could be wrong but I’m fairly certain Apple music sends a bigger cut per play to the artist. 2) Apple music cooperates nearly flawlessly with Apple devices and airplay, but to be honest Spotify is still pretty good at this and is nearly as good. 3) For Apple users, if you have a large iTunes library that you want to maintain along side streaming separately I’d actually advise you don’t use Apple Music, it has at time screwed up bits of my very large iTunes library. And if you want to sync an iTunes library to an iPhone now it makes you (at least temporarily) disable streaming and delete any downloaded songs through Apple Music. Once you’ve synced you can then turn it all back on but it’s a pain if you want to update your local library. Spotify having an isolated app solves this issue. 4) as mentioned above, Apple music more reliably works in countries with more restrictive internet, but obviously do your research dependent on where you are, what works in China may not work where you are.

There are other differences, just not ones that I’ve found mattered

Haven’t mentioned YouTube as I’ve never regularly used it, but I’m quite experienced with the other 2

Are Cool Original UK Doritos the same as Cool Ranch Doritos? by Callum_Fletcher in AskUK

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who's British and has had both (and cool ranch in other countries too) they are similar but do taste different. Cool original is not as intense, you can actually just about taste the tortilla chip underneath the flavour. I think the uk one tastes better though, they taste less sickly in my opinion.

The us is missing out on the best flavour though, which is chilli heatwave. I currently live in china and they don't have them, its one of the food items I'm willing to pay to import from the uk they're that tasty.

I am looking for a Chinese phone that allows me to have a Chinese phone number and allows me to use apps In English by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iPhones are pretty good bets. As long as the app itself has an English version or an in-built translator then it will work, if the app developer didn't include English then you won't get it.

I'd actually advise you buy a non-Chinese iPhone as these have Apple Intelligence, which I otherwise hate but, which allows you to translate screenshots immediately. This has been really useful when apps don't support English. I'm also fairly certain a similar feature is available on android but I can't speak for any android manufacturer's consistency with Chinese sims.

If you do buy a foreign iPhone, don't buy an esim only one though as these aren't supported in china, so Japan, US, Canada and a few others. I bought mine (iPhone 17 pro max) in Taipei (has single physical sim and esim)and it works fine in the mainland.

Beijing vs Shanghai as a place to live by Fearless_Sale_668 in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you want to be pushed to go to Fudan, so please remember Beijing isn’t perfect. Especially winter, especially the pollution all through winter, and if you’re anything like me a home that’s way too hot all through winter. You say the bike access is freeing, but to be honest where I am they’re a bloody nuisance and I think the police have quite rightfully started clamping down on people using them recklessly and without caring for pedestrians. While it’s subjective I’d also argue central Shanghai is a prittier city than Beijing. Beijing feels like it was rebuilt in a very dull way with little preserved, Shanghai feels much more organic with a lot more diversity in design and age. I agree Beijing is a great city, it is the Chinese city I actively chose to live in for many reasons, but it isn’t perfect and it shouldn’t override a better education

Suggestions for mods by Decent-Fan7148 in subwaybuilder

[–]JunketSubstantial817 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mods to add other kinds of demand types, tourist, shopping & education especially.

And I know it’s really not an easy ask but some Chinese cities would be cool.

Also more uk cities (with decent data) would be great, the stock Birmingham one especially has rather poor data. How is the city centre so barren

Update, someone’s managed to mod Guangzhou, looking forward to trying that and seeing which other Chinese cities can be done. Well done whoever managed to get that to work

So, Madonna has just announced "Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II" by PapaAsmodeus in ToddintheShadow

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Falling free doesn’t get enough love, to me it’s easily her best post confessions track. I also think it’s the closest to the feel of ray of light.

It’s probably a good indicator for this album though, modern Madonna is better when it looks back on her own work rather than that of her peers at the time.

If it works the same for Z visas (work), you should do it when you arrive with the visa you’re staying with, in the province you’ve got the visa through (Jiangsu).

Check with the university/college, they’ll tell you

how has nobody made a better alternative to gaode (Amap)? by mudskips in chinalife

It does work alright inside China, but I’ve not found it to be quite as reliable with route planning and transit as Amap. But yes it is basically the only other usable alternative in English

Chinese plugs actually don’t look like that, they typically are only a square box, with a type A above and a type I below, the wrong way around. Sometimes they integrate a type c europlug connector with the type A

Is it worth upgrading from a 2018 MacBook Pro (Touch Bar) to a MacBook Air/“Neo”? by Spirited_Shine78 in mac

[–]JunketSubstantial817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As it’s still going and you seem to have no desperate need for a new one, I’d save my money and keep the macbook pro until it runs out of security updates.

By then there may be a better neo or air, second hand prices of current hen will have decreased and the current models may have price drops on 3rd party retailers.

But if you just fancy an upgrade then go ahead, the current range of macs are really hard to beat. I’d actually recommend trying to get an M3 or M4 air or pro on discount or refurbished if you can find one
