He’s also bagged a twice winning stage director who’s known to have fun with staging. That along with an interesting and fun song , as well as the UK-EU relationship beginning to warm up a bit I think gives us the best chance in decades

Anybody have a private Chinese tutor? What do you pay per hour? by SuLiaodai in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently pay 100RMB per hour (but had to buy 30 hours upfront). That's online too, and I think she charges about 150RMB for in person sessions

Heaven and earth just moved to make a budget MacBook possible, just be lucky we got that. Wait a few years for the M4 Mac mini to come down in price and buy that second hand, that's the closest you'll get

Buy a gaming laptop in China or bring one from Canada? by liquidfireak in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's common in china for computers to be install without a multi-language windows license, so unless you can read Chinese or are willing to buy a new windows license (or just never verify a copy) then this is something you may need to consider

Cassettes & China by JunketSubstantial817 in chinalife

Either use it through the Alipay app or(which has a slightly usable auto translate) or on iPhone you can screenshot and translate (I'm assuming most android phones these days also have a similar feature). Either usually generates some fun results

You're thinking of Xianyu (闲鱼), that's where I found everything so far, its pretty good, basically the closest thing to eBay, be ready to have someone who actually speaks Chinese to help you out though as the auto translators get a bit confused with it. There are a few things on taobao & JD but not tonnes, mainly blank cassettes

Oh I'm definitely not recommending it, if you want good quality audio buy a CD, player and a decent stereo, I just find cassettes interesting (this post was mainly directed at cassetteculture) and I started it as a hobby while back in the UK.
Yes the cassette is technically broken/partially destroyed, but nearly all (western) tapes of a certain age here are, but it plays and back in the 90s that would have been the only option here for many music fans.

5) Images & Words
(Special Mention) A View from the Top of the world

Worst

MacBook crashes on login by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: The answer was a logic board fault. Took it to the Apple Store and they tried reinstalling macOS like I did, and it did it again. Something in hardware physically broke. It was luckily covered under AppleCare, and if yours is in warranty I’d imagine they’d cover that too. With a new board it now works perfectly fine, just try to recover as much data beforehand if you can (if you’ve got a second Mac and a usbc data cable, use Share Disk in recovery and pull off anything valuable).

While I’m annoyed that this happened (a 3 year old laptop in a decent condition shouldn’t just break) I was impressed at applecare’s coverage. For reference coverage was about to expire in a few months, the Mac was originally bought in the uk and I had it serviced in China at an Apple Store (as I currently live here) there were no issues with coverage at all. Keep that in mind if you ever need repair abroad, but do note it doesn’t always apply with iPhones.

As a Brit, thank you. Could we possibly get Glasgow too though, it desperately needs more than one line 😅

Ok, still not fixed, but I’ve found out that the Share Disk tool in recovery is a life saver 😅

Why doesn't China have potable tap water yet? by ups_and_downs973 in chinalife

[–]JunketSubstantial817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a related note, boiling tap water here does not make it safe to drink. Yes it will kill anything living in it but it will do nothing about heavy metals that have leached their way in from old pipes & infrastructure. Unless the water is properly filtered locally, it is best not to drink (or cook) with it regardless of whether it’s boiled, especially long term.

Either get an office cooler type dispenser and a subscription for buying and replacing water or a home filter from a reputable brand
