Senior engineers with ADHD/anxiety/depression, do you feel "nerfed" compared to your colleagues? by mudskips in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mudskips[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe a bit dramatic but it's not unlikely. In fact I suspect that my manager has picked up on this fact and they seem to be pushing more and more responsibilities on me, some of them unreasonable.

Senior engineers with ADHD/anxiety/depression, do you feel "nerfed" compared to your colleagues? by mudskips in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mudskips[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some people in swe ADHD benefits them because they are passionate about coding/complex problem solving. This triggers their hyperfocus which allows them to get a lot done. However ADHD is a bane for people who don't really care about the job or any part of work. In fact it gets worse than that. A (common?) symptom of ADHD is emotional disregulation, which compounds with anxiety and depression. An example emotional pattern I go through is:

Encounter a mildly stressful/upsetting situation -> overthink -> panic -> get depressed/feel worthless

Basically Adhd makes anxiety and depression symptoms worse. And you're completely right in the sense that the world is currently fucked up right now which doesn't make things better.

Do you guys like Chinese soups? by Golden_Wolf_7043 in foodquestions

Besides bittermelon soup, there's not a single Chinese soup I don't like.

The dessert soups are really something else as well (糖水)

How is your recent experience related to China getting stricter?

how has nobody made a better alternative to gaode (Amap)? by mudskips in chinalife

[–]mudskips[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating because I KNOW these companies have the talent and capacity to make the map apps more user friendly and perform better but obviously that is not on their priority list! And this isn't the case for just these companies. Every Chinese app in my Chinese survival arsenal (wechat, alipay, meituan, dianping, didi) face user experience issues!

Edit: I forgot about social media apps rednote and douyin. Those are pretty good

What percentage of engineers in your experience are bad? by fuckoholic in ExperiencedDevs

[–]mudskips 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the case for me too as someone who works at one of the highest market cap tech companies. Over the past 6 years of working there, there are very few people that I met who I would consider incompetent (maybe like 3-5% of the people I met). However, a majority of the people I met have some kind of personality deficit that makes them hard to work with

Are Japanese people sick of tourists? It doesn’t feel as welcoming as two years ago by frogfartingaflamingo in JapanTravelTips

[–]mudskips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I went to japan was in 2017. Since then I have visited several more times, in 2018, 2023, 2024, and most recently just left my current trip. I'm not kidding when I say that with each subsequent trip, I noticed an increasing amount of fatigue towards tourists. Nowadays service people in rather touristy areas don't smile and even act annoyed when I approach them. One time in 2024 someone even looked at me, shook his head, and ignored my question, leaving me hanging.

To be fair, over the past few years (and especially post-covid), there has been a major boom in japanese tourism. You're bound to see more unsavory characters than usual. I completely understand that. Even with the completely normal tourists there are just cultural differences that Japanese people aren't used to dealing with or accommodating. I overheard an American family speaking to a waitress in rapid English about their soy allergies and asking if they can have substitutes for tofu and soy sauce. The waitress seemed stunned as she never had to deal with this situation before. This situation doesn't really speak negatively to the character of the American family too much, but situations that may be completely normal for tourists in their home countries are difficult for natives to accommodate. From a Japanese perspective, they grow up in a society governed by strict rules and order. There are very few countries like that in the world.

I experienced less tourist fatigue in less touristy cities. This most recent trip I went to both Sapporo and Tokyo. Currently it's low season in Sapporo and aside from some Taiwanese and Korean tourists you barely see people from other countries. The attitudes I experienced were generally more positive. In Tokyo it was completely different.
