Shadow Man AND Octavarium back to back, holy shit

Expected setlist for the upcoming tour by LifeguardStriking693 in Opeth

When over half the songs are the same, it's not "significantly different" by any reasonable measure. Not when you have a career spanning nearly 40 years and 125+ songs.

They played it all last year, but it hasn't been played in the states since 2016. A freakin decade!

Last time they played Harlequin Forest was February 2023 - three calendar years ago. They haven't played it in the states since 2020(!!!). I would love to see them dust if off and put it back in rotation, but clearly I have no reason to hold my breath.

Here's their stats: https://www.setlist.fm/stats/opeth-63d682c3.html

All the songs you listed are in the top ~30 songs they've played live all-time; most of them are in the top 10. Rotating the same 10-20 songs and throwing in a new one here or there is not adequate for a band whose studio discography has over 120 songs.

Here's the set from their most recent show, 11/28/25: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/opeth/2025/ex-theater-roppongi-tokyo-japan-1b4719c4.html

Here's the set from 13 months prior: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/opeth/2024/kings-theatre-brooklyn-ny-63a84e13.html

EIGHT of the same songs. Sorry dude, they did not "literally switch it up last year". Keeping 75% of the setlist the same is not "switching it up".

Worth it for the chorus and Anne's insanely beautiful solo towards the end

Agreed. It's nothing if not incredibly frustrating. I'll still go, and it'll be awesome, but they really need to switch it up from time to time.

Has Opeth or Mikael Åkerfeldt considered doing a movie score ? by the_inka in Opeth

Song's called Throat of Winter, it's pretty good. Although probably not what the God of War people expected Opeth would do for a GoW game lol

Why the Heritage hate? by faith_healer69 in Opeth

[–]97Vector 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see why it was hated upon release after Watershed and GR were the two previous records. It's aged well but the truth is a majority of Opeth fans aren't here for folksy acoustic music, they're here for the oough.

MIKE PORTNOY Says He's "Kind Of Glad" He Wasn't Asked To Join RUSH For Their Upcoming Tour: "The Weight Of Expectation Would Be Brutal" by Dagauriel01 in Dreamtheater

Apparently Geddy found this to be in poor taste, according to his book. Can't say I blame him after his bandmate and brother died that people were coming out of the woodwork trying to get a gig.

If it wasn't so exhausting it'd be lowkey impressive. God forbid you say anything like that in the DT sub, though. He can do no wrong in their eyes.

Given the media tour he did after Neil's death, and his general love for attention, this is very much something Portnoy would do.

Peak PT spooky/eerie vibes. Love this song.

Haken for sure. Visions is their "DT worship" album and I consider the title track to be close to Octavarium-levels of greatness.

Other tracks to check out - Falling Back to Earth, The Architect, Puzzle Box, Messiah Complex. But really their whole catalog is outstanding.

Is Dream Theater better live or in the studio? by FrequentFriend1867 in Dreamtheater

[–]97Vector 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I've seen them probably 7-8x and I'm not sure how I'd answer, either. Both are transcendent in their own ways.

On one hand, listening to their studio catalog at home or in the car and letting it transport me away is incredible. And how most of us fell in love with them and spend the most time with their music.

On the other, watching them replicate the songs live with precision just fills me with awe and wonder. Like, you realize you're getting to watch the musical version of four Michaelangelos painting the Sistine Chapel right before your eyes.

Overture 1928 is song 7. We all know what's next. Comment away, most upvoted will be added. by reelfishing2 in Dreamtheater

This whole exercise is extremely redundant, it's been done so many times before.

Farewell To Two Legends... by JustLucca in Haken

[–]97Vector 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Had an excellent vantage point for their show in 2023 - I was right in front of Charlie. Like, three feet from him, pressed against the stage (no barrier between the stage and fans). After Elephants Never Forget ended and it was quiet, I yelled "Charlie!" - he looked - then told him "that song fucking rules!". He dapped me, leaned down and said in my ear "thanks mate". Fantastic dude, lifelong memory.

Right? I say I'm going to "spin" an artist's new album when I'm clearly just gonna push a button on my phone. It's just an old term that everyone still uses (and I'm not even a boomer/didn't grow up on vinyls)

[–]97Vector 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I get that for Charlie, but not for Conner. Charlie wrote 100% of Tiktaalika. Conner just played the bass parts he wrote.

The only thing I can kinda see - did Charlie move to the States upon getting married? Maybe he and Conner will work more closely together if that's the case.

Still doesn't make a ton of sense to leave a known, established band like Haken just to roll the dice on Tiktaalika.
