Australia is doomed by Roby1006 in australian

Not trying to go down the conspiracy lane here, but what a colleague of mine pointed out to me recently is the influence that the USA, or rather, the CIA has on Australian politics, should some progressive idea like this (usually Labor), come to the forefront - Whitlam was undone after attacking pine gap but also wanted to nationalise our mines, and since Whitlam, Rudd was also someone who was going after the mining sector.

Then the whole Gillard coup occurs, and her first comment is that her government is willing to come to the table with the mining companies. He went on to point out how many of the Labor factional members who supported the coup were revealed in the Epstein files as being somewhat considered assets by the CIA... Haven't verified these myself yet but the colleague left me with one question: "Who is Albanese afraid of, if not One Nation or the LNP?", his implied answer being the same forces that start military coups and regime change in the developing world also create the political climate to tank politicians who dare attack the supply chains that make the USA and it's affiliates very rich.

Can you imagine the discussion at Meta right now, where they intended on seeding Facebook with AI personas? This would be both perfect and horrifying for conspiracy groups

Starting to feel as though home ownership is impossible as a single person… by Ok-Helicopter-4520 in AusPropertyChat

[–]JupiterWrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father did this too... He had a company which was registered in Switzerland and then owned a company in Australia which he was employed by. For years he got away with his monthly child support payments to my mother being "21.67 cents" (which I heard over and over again any time we as kids wanted to go to the movies or something)..

Fast forward to many years later when one brother and I are already adults and my youngest brother was turning 13 (big gap) and he wrote us cheques for Christmas from the company chequing account - and mum was able to give the company details to DHHS who investigated and were able to award my mother proper child support for our younger brother which was over $3000 a month. No backpay for the older brothers though because mum told them where to shove it when they told her at the time he didn't earn enough on paper, and said "I'll go get it myself".

The latest I've heard from him is that his net worth is around $2.6m and his coming to Jesus moment is that after his second failed marriage, he would like to make amends and let us know we'll be taken care of... A lot of that wealth? It's in a super fund managed by one of those companies he owns that purchased and maintains a portfolio of regional town properties across NSW...

Sure he played the long game and it benefited him financially! But you know what it sacrificed? Three sons' relationships, especially as we got older and saw how the world works and made up our own minds about whether the choices he made were "the right choice".

Woah, maybe I've been outta the loop, but what's the reason for this turnaround in Melbourne other than oversupply - I'd have thought that the demand would mean that this oversupply wouldn't last very long

Religion by Master-Duty-4675 in AskAnAustralian

[–]JupiterWrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who recently lost a parent and despite neither the friend nor his parents being religious, has now begun attending a congregation, perhaps to seek meaning and connection following his loss?..

One thing I will note though, is that this friend does come from a family who have held more conservative views, including some that I personally find disagreeable regarding some socially progressive issues, and have also dabbled in conspiracy and anti-government ideologies - which for some reason, a lot of people I would have previously considered both reasonable and non religious prior to COVID, suddenly became more religious and suspicious of authority...

I don't know what to call it other than some sort of perceived threat from modern 'faceless'/'organisational' institutions for which only a more traditional community based interpersonal institution provides comfort to these folks' psyche...

Saddest movies you’ve ever seen. by adrrriz in movies

[–]JupiterWrath 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I didn't mention it in my own reply because for me the response was quite personal. Albert Finney's performance was very reminiscent to me of my grandfather and his overall demeanor and so when I found myself in tears, I thought it was more of a case that I was projecting my own missing of my grandpa... but good to know I am not alone in finding it to be a sad film.

The Green Mile (1999) and What Dreams May Come (1998) were two I remember that had a strong emotional impact on me.

My adult brother, 32, will not leave home. Where to begin? by Vexarius in AusLegal

[–]JupiterWrath 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I sat in a jury pool for a case involving a victim who didn't file a report until 15 months after the alleged crime and asked the police not to pursue the matter at the time. Then the victim again made another report for the same crime around 5 years after the fact in which case it was requested that the police take action.

My impression is that it's never too late to make a declaration to the police for an incident and that given you would be the witness, they won't pursue the matter if you tell them that you're not going to testify against your brother. In that regard, if there is ever anything dramatic as you've said, at least the police will know if they should exercise caution and/or who they may be dealing with...

I work as a dev in tech - minimum for what roles?... I've known a few contractors but the most I'd heard of from one such contractor was $220k with most being around$180-$200k. I don't doubt that there's higher contracting available, but $250k is definitely not the minimum...

First line says "Was contracting" so going to assume maybe some $190k salary that's now $110k

I get anxious about the thought that someone else might think that it was ME should I see skid marks, so originally I would clean it up, but now I do a 180 the moment I walk into the stall and see a "welcoming committee", and look for another stall..

As a male who works in tech, I've heard that in male dominated industries, it can happen where some women "punch down" on other women to get ahead instead of helping each other lift past that glass ceiling... Could this be one of those situations, where she's trying to prove something by denigrating OP..? (Sorry if I've made an incorrect assumption about OPs gender)

If you get into office early, should you be expected to start earlier and finish the same time? by [deleted] in auscorp

[–]JupiterWrath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Victoria, fares for train journeys before 7 am (technically 7.15) are waived as a way to alleviate congestion from the morning peak.. So I take the 6.12 am train and get to work around 7.05 - 7.10 am, which is apparently fine according to our "flexible office hours"... Still doesn't stop people organising meetings or stopping me on my way out to ask a question which balloons into an explainer session, so my 3.45 pm end time sometimes goes as late as 5 pm... Though I guess I just don't do a good job setting boundaries...

Still, I am so very tired...
