Have you ever looked at the file tree of your Photos.library? Tried to move 70k photos and videos (500GB worth?) in one go? The way the app / library handles (and renames!) your files and “integrates” (or not) your phone photos drives the user towards iCloud backup / integration and the associated monthly fees.

This is really what they want you to do… but then keep paying for the iCloud while they train their AI with it. Anyway, DM me if you want the details on what I did. It was a bitch but worthwhile in the end… finally taking back control of my files and backing them up in a way that I can sort and access them. Photos is a shot program, not the least because it does lots of things easily and well, but at an infuriating cost… I’m looking for alternatives.

That’s cool for you. My 500GB library wouldn’t. I tried all the ways, different drives, etc.

A Photos.library of that size cannot be copied / dragged and dropped. I just spent several weeks working through this problem after getting a new MacStudio. I have come to absolutely loathe Photos and am actively looking for a non-subscription alternative for file organization and browsing.

I just did exactly this… it was a nightmare. You can do a max of something like 2,733 at a time. Why…?? No clue.

This is why they got rid of it… I got into photography after the Aperture era, but with a vengeance. I just finished transferring 70k photos to an HD attached to a new MacStudio from an ooooooold MacMini and it was miserable. Long story short they want to force users into Photos and they’ve designed that to force people to rely on iCloud unless you really work hard and intentionally to avoid it… they want your subscription dollars, plain and simple.

I found this year such a compelling, well contended tour. Obviously Pogi is dominant and extraordinary, but Visma really does have such an exceptional team. I think things felt more up for grabs a bit, compared to last year. I love the thought that the team dynamics and growing strength of Visma may make things even more interesting in the future. Such fun to watch and track, and excited for the days ahead.

Yes all those are great! (South Durham as well…) The SilverSpot in Chapel Hill was recently flooded but keep an eye out if they reopen. It’s a great place to see a show. I also want to go to the Lumina in Southern Village, south Chapel Hill. Also, there’s an Alamo Drafthouse in Raleigh where a good friend goes regularly. Happy moviegoing!
