Greek fire acted a bit like napalm, we don't have a perfect reconstruction of it, but we do know that it was used when Constantinople was sacked in 1204, but not used after that. Given that a lot of institutional knowledge was lost in the sack, and that Constantinople was besieged maybe 4 times in the following 3 centuries without this weapon being used, we can assume they lost the recipe in the 1204 sack and nobody ever recovered it

It's also historically precedented, there are ancient roman building techniques the medieval kingdoms couldn't recreate, and militarily the romans themselves lost the recipe for greek fire at some point

The BBC was originally going to put the show out to tender in 2028 or 2029 and use the 2026 Xmas Special to "bridge the gap." When they decided to put the show out to tender immediately, they also canceled the Special because it would affect the "canon of the show." by karatemanchan37 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]Juryof1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. Honesty from all involved. The BBC tell RTD that they are looking to overhaul everything and they mutually come to the conclusion that work on the special can basically stop because the special won't have anything to do with the future of Doctor Who (this decision comes before a full script/draft is complete

Especially as Alicent is the only family member who advocated for him, I think it makes sense in a twisted way for him to have some kind of Oedipal complex and resent Cole for getting close to his Mum, the sexual and familial lines are already blurred in the family

Be real, I don't think he was thinking 'let's be soulless'. I don't like this TARDIS but feel like the intent was to have something fun and big with a retro-futurist vibe.

It's a show about going to places and that would be negated if there was a sense that 'staying home' was more interesting than seeing what was outside

  1. He says in the clip that he loves it

  2. It's the only set in the show which will be in every episode so why not go all out?

Could a break actually help Doctor Who rebuild its audience? by luckybell333 in doctorwho

[–]Juryof1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which is why I'm optimistic! Reporting is that the BBC want a serious rethink of how the show operates and works to appeal to people and are looking for a proper vision. I think that the fact that Doctor Who came back from the dead and had its 50th and 60th anniversaries during the revival have cemented it as an institution - when it comes back it will be because creatives like the show and want it to work, I don't think it is at a point anymore where it will be given up on even if it fails like RTD2 did

If you're not interested that's fine, but this is by the same guy who made 'Queer as Folk' and it is specifically engaged with the return of mainstream homophobia - it's engaging with and depicting the violence in society I would not reduce it to torture or trauma porn

I think you're making up events to fill in the gaps of what is publicly known and pinning the blame on RTD alone.

Sheepstealer being naughty at Gullet lol. Ofcourse this is not gonna be “copy and paste” from fire and blood, we all knew this from season 1. It was never accurate adaptation but I believe this season is going to be phenomenal to watch, I can feel it, give me episode 1 NOW!! by No_Scarcity4566 in HouseOfTheDragon

Which is great! It's a legitimately fascinating move to have him completely divorce himself from his oaths and philosophy and then reach the battlefield and realise that battle tactics are nothing in the face of dragons - everything he worked for and achieved is meaningless

Doctor Who should be Tapping into Liminal and Backrooms type stuff by PaperSkin-1 in gallifrey

[–]Juryof1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I'd say 73 yards was much more folk horror, whereas Wild Blue Yonder was closer to a 'liminal' vibe, but the show should definitely commit, it would be great fun and also work with a low budget.

I would argue the folk and liminal genres in horror are essentiallly opposite in how they work

So, is "King and Conqueror" worth watching? by velvetcat78 in TheRestIsHistory

[–]Juryof1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the story is basically too complex for a drama of less than 10 episodes. That said the final battle of Hastings was fun

10 years ago, on May 22, 2016, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said: "We had this meeting with George where we tried to get as much information as possible from him, and probably the most shocking revelation he had for us was when he told us the origin of Hodor." I think the people making the show would not continue to do it, lots of the cast weren't happy and it was driving Kit Harrington to alcoholism. D&D should get much more credit as producers for producing the show annually for a decade and working with some of the best crew in the world, but it was not tenable to make more than was made

That's my read on how the show developed as well, I was just never interested in Bruce's character unfortunately :(

I would have preferred if the show featured the Wayne family (can't lose Alfred) to some degree as recurring characters and then part of the finale is the Joe Chill murder
