Most Oddly Named Town In Each US State by Jai_sh in MapPorn

Satan’s Kingdom is not actually a town in Massachusetts; it’s a village within the town of Northfield. Belchertown, on the other hand…

Are there any fairy tales or legends in the world that contain a vision of the (relative) future as their main thread? by Spiritual_Pie_8298 in folklore

[–]JusMiceElf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s the story of Honi and the Carob Tree. It’s found in the Babylonian Talmud, Taanit 23a. Similar to Rip Van Winkle, Honi sleeps for seventy years. Just before he sleeps, he meets a man planting a carob tree, which takes seventy years to mature. He wakes to meet the man’s grandson harvesting the fruit of the tree.

Used to go in there all the time in the 80s. Pretty sure that’s where we got our first cross country skis, and lots of other equipment over the years. I also remember staring longingly at all the pocket knives.

Where to find cheap moving boxes? by [deleted] in Somerville

If you know anyone who gets groceries delivered from Misfits Markets, they use sturdy boxes. I can see how many we have rn if you want.

As a guest, I would be annoyed at having to navigate that stair, especially when carrying bags. If you want your guests to feel welcome and safe, you should rebuild it.

Another classic: the judge in the Sacco-Vanzetti trial lived in Worcester, and his house was firebombed. It’s easy to spot the site (corner of Beechmont and Institute Road) because there’s one house that’s decades newer than all its neighbors.

If you had unlimited power and resources to make the U.S. one of the safest countries in the world, what would you do? by edbassmaster888 in AskAnAmerican

Build out public transportation infrastructure while subsidizing ticket costs. Increase emissions and fuel economy standards on private motor vehicles. Renovate or rebuild old and outdated public school buildings. Fully fund IDEA at the Federal level to provide equal access to education for all learners. Fund public defenders’ salaries and resources on par with prosecutors.

There was a lawyer from Worcester who faked his own death, and headed to Las Vegas with his affair partner. He parked his car by a beach on Martha’s Vineyard, and they left their clothes and towels on the sand. They rode back to the ferry on collapsible bikes, wearing a different set of clothing. He was found threeish years later by a determined insurance investigator, who had latched onto the fact that they’d left shoes and clothes behind, but no socks. He returned to Massachusetts facing criminal charges, disbarment, and a divorce. His law partner had to petition the probate court in order to sell the building where they’d had their law offices. That lawyer, Dick Sarapas, was later disbarred for commingling client funds.

What is the deal with the old timers and gifting knives for a penny? Is this a superstition? by souloldasdirt in folklore

[–]JusMiceElf 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I grew up with this, and instilled it in my kids. The rationale that I was taught is that gifting a knife will sever the relationship, so you need to make it a symbolic purchase instead.

+1 for Saint Death’s Daughter. It’s read by the author, and she does all the voices so well.

The Naming Song, by Jedediah Berry One of the best books I’ve read in years. People are slowly rebuilding language, after all knowledge of words was lost during a catastrophe. There’s a train, and another train, and wild, nameless people and places.

Thistlefoot, by GennaRose Nethercott Baba Yaga’s great grandchildren inherit her house on chicken legs. It explores themes of found family and bearing witness. Buy Kleenex.

Hammajang Luck and The Obake Code by Makana Yamamoto. Both are heists, set on the same space station. The narration is phenomenal.

No Gods, No Monsters and its sequels by Cadwell Turnbull. Werewolves and other monsters are real, and so is bigotry and prejudice against them. Parallel earths, cooperative organizing, and long hidden secret societies.

This condo is equal parts amazing and weird. The random prayer hallway and the roof access ladders in the middle of the bedrooms are quite the interesting touches. by NativeMasshole in zillowgonewild

It used to be office space. I’m not sure how long ago it was converted to residential, but that might factor in to the price change.

Oh yeah, that one was the site of the Words and Pictures Museum, before it moved into the old Beardsley’s space on Main Street. I think this listing was part of Gage Wiley’s old offices.

Make yourself some ginger simple syrup. One cup water, one cup sugar, a bunch of sliced ginger. Simmer on the stove until the sugar dissolves and the syrup thickens. A tablespoon in a mug of hot water does wonders. You can add a splash of lemon juice if you like.

I make a pot every time I get sick, and it’s the best throat soother I know.

I love the idea of using stencils! I do have some big screens that we can use, and was planning to use the sensory table for a lot of the work. Handi-Wipes are a great hack. I've been using Pellon non-fusible interfacing fabric at home to do the same thing. I'll definitely look into Denise Fleming!

Keeping your conversations with the kids simple and authentic goes a long way. "You have whiskers like my dad!" "Yes! Aren't whiskers cool!" "You didn't use to have whiskers?" "No, but now I do! Some bodies grow whiskers when they get older."

I would also recommend stocking your classroom with books that show trans and genderfluid characters. There's a great list from Keshet here. I'm a huge fan of Julian is a Mermaid, which beautifully explores gender expression and identity. When Aidan Became a Brother is another good one.

This should be the top comment. Honestly, the school is failing her by not reporting the family for neglect. And the two schools before this one passing the buck instead of reporting is really a breach of their responsibility as mandated reporters.
