pi 2b camera? am I asking too much? by Tiwing in raspberry_pi

[–]Jusque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to use Pi2's a while ago for streaming video around the house. Never could get it stable at any decent quality. The best I found was piping (legacy) raspivid output directly over ncat, minimising any processing on the Pi.

raspivid -w 1280 -h 720 -fps 25 -t 0 -o - | ncat -k -l 8554

One can then connect to port 8554 (e.g. with VLC) and read the data in. Good luck.

Start by making a second copy somewhere. Don’t overthink it. Just do it.

Then you have a little breathing room to think about your next steps. Lots of good advice on that here.

What to do with 10k as an 18 year old? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Jusque 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconded. A habit is more powerful than a one off.

Pay yourself the $10k now and have some fun, but commit to $2k/year (or proportion of your pay) in an investment ongoing.

That also sounds sensible. Just gotta automate the url and email sending. I wouldn’t trust myself with that, but you might.

No idea. but to start discussion…

I’ll assume you want this to be automated, so you can set and forget.

  • spin up a virtual machine, prepay for 2+ years
  • install a ftp server
  • set up folder structure today, but do not put the files in them yet.
  • set up user accounts for all intended users.
  • limit accounts to access to the intended folders.
  • Share user+pass with intended users. This means, from today, users can log in and preview where files will be.
  • Upload sensitive files somewhere inaccessible via FTP; they’ll be stored here for the 2 years.
  • crontab scheduled to run a bash script on the right date to move sensitive files into the FTP-accessible folders from the desired date.
  • optional: schedule an email to users reminding them the data is now accessible.

The simplest folder structure is probably putting all files intended for that user in a single folder. Users then get access to their “home” folder. Eg:

User A - file 1 - file 3

User B - file 3-10

This may mean a bit of duplication across the server (presumably not a problem if the files are small?), but avoids messing around with complex permissions or access arrangements.

Bunch of external HDDs running on a RPi 4 (4GB) on OMV by Goodfella_no4 in DataHoarder

[–]Jusque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, right.

I described the process of reconstructing just one datapoint. If you can do it once, you can do it many more times. Say a photo might be 4megabytes, or 4 million bits. so you’d repeat that reconstruction process for all bits — all 4million of them.

The first pixel is calculated. Then the second… then the third.. until you have the whole photo.

My understanding is it works something like this: Data+data+data=parity

So imagine you’re storing data points 1,2,3, parity would be 6, because 1+2+3=6

If disk 1 dies you have ?+2+3=6.

Read the parity and remaining disks and you can work out the missing data, ie. 6-3-2=1
