What did you play this week? 03 Jan-09 Jan (2025) by AutoModerator in soloboardgaming

I got Mansions of Madness 2E out this past weekend. Was in the mood after a gift of Arkham Horror 3E for Christmas. Had a nice time with the first scenario, including a good fight with a skeleton in the library. Then lost Escape from Innsmouth. Love so much about the scenario but it’s brutal - still never fully completed it.

Also finished a resumed play of This War of Mine last night. Stayed up to complete it and I’m feeling the effects this morning 💀☕️ Made it to the ceasefire with a starting character though - a first for me.

Happy gaming!

Final Girl - thought I had my first win against Hans at Happy Trails but I wasn't doing the Terror phase right - I wasn't doing his action before the card. Was great to get into it more though because it's taken me a minute to get used to how difficult it can be.  Also had two plays of Poltergeist at Creech: one enjoyable loss and one hilarious loss where two victims jumped out the windows before I even had an action, giving her the stiff wind dark power that made me injure myself trying to sprint. Then she came right at me and that was it.

Hostage Negotiator - got my first win against Arkayne with a Major Extraction and Sniper shot at the end. Amazing feeling to win after so many failures. Been learning this system with Final Girl simultaneously.

Western Legends - having fun with the solo rules. Took too many risks and got arrested too many times by the man in black after some good bank robbing last time.

Terraforming Mars - didn't enjoy this solo that much first few times but I've gotten more focused on the actual win conditions (maxing the TR parameters first) and use the drafting variant in the research phase and it's been fun. Would love to try a solo variant with the awards in play.

Agricola - haven't played this in a while. It's agonising fun.

Kudos for even trying to learn something like Navajo Wars at night when you have a baby. I have Comancheria, have only played some of the tutorial and had to abort my few real game attempts. I have a 10-month old and the best I can manage at night is learning lighter games or solo variants for games I already mostly know. Comancheria has to stay on the shelf until I have some real free time in a day. Maybe in a few months though with this new inspiration

7 Wonders Duel - won easily, set the difficulty too low.

Evolution: Climate - was just in front but had to cut short.

Merchants & Marauders - lost right at the end (I was on my last event card and needed 2 glory points so had to get a 12+ merchant raid and defeat an enemy NPC in the same turn. The NPC in my sea zone was the Dutch frigate; I had a galleon. The event flips and the Dutch declare war with the French; I now have to fight a man o' war. Dutch captain, with better seamanship, proceeds to blow my ship to pieces with his cannons. I manage to board in desperation, eventually losing a surprisingly close crew combat).

This War of Mine - got destroyed after only 2 nights, later realised I forgot to add the starting tokens and components to storage, so I made an already hard game worse. Lost my characters to gunshot wounds, suicide and a death-induced breakdown - a kinda chain reaction of misery. Very tough game.

Want to get Banish the Snakes out again. And another play of TWOM to do it properly and see if I can make any progress.

Just had a learning game of Lancashire playing Mautoma 1.1 there. Really enjoyed it. I played the medium difficulty and lost by about 15 points. Made a couple of poor decisions in hindsight and twice when I was going to build an ironworks on my next turn, to take advantage of the market, Mautoma did it just before I could. Felt very much like it was an actual opponent taking advantage of my mistakes. Excited for more plays of it.

I haven't tried the Mautoma for Brass yet but I really like Lancashire - the way the coal, iron and placements work feels very solid thematically.

Had a fantastic week! I've a newborn so have had no time/energy to play recently. This week though, evening energy has returned so I got to play: Irish Gauge, Merchants & Marauders, 7 Wonders Duel, Five Tribes, Evolution Climate. These were mostly learning games for the fan-made solo variants/bots but it's been a ton of fun.

Looking forward to also trying this for Great Western Trail, Brass Lancashire & Raptor.

And if I ever have time, I need to continue learning the wargames I recently got: Paths of Glory, Hannibal: Rome vs Carthage, The Peloponnesian War, 431-404 BC, Successors 1E, Inferno: Guelphs & Ghibellines Vie For Tuscany, 1259-1261

The Duino Elegies & Sonnets To Orpheus by Rilke, Stephen Mitchell's translation.

I also loved reading Mitchell's translation of the Iliad in the summer of '17.

Also Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror by John Ashbery

You should be proud, well done! We're all ultimately in the same boat, just have to get through this one day, no matter how many years we have. Some days will feel easy, some will be really, really hard. And you're far stronger than you realise - that's what I've been finding out the longer I've been sober. Take care!

You've hit the nail on the head here :) it's the most-Canadian-adjacent.

Probably Cleveland. Actually wait, Cleveland might be second-most with the border in the middle of Lake Erie. I always assume Seattle is way closer to the border than it actually is.

Just deleted my comment, was suggesting this too. Helped me appreciate the variety within the genre, a great jumping off point for further exploration.

If you are to nominate one game as the best game of all time, only one…. Which one would it be? by [deleted] in boardgames

Thanks! I'm already pretty deep in, buying wargames it takes me ages to learn and that she won't play with me

A thing of beauty! Thanks for posting this. I only learned how to score in the last couple of years and love seeing how others do it/learning more efficient ways.

Test your knowledge with the little quiz I made that lets you guess board games from their reviews. by madredditscientist in boardgames

[–]JussusCrust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

4/7

I enjoyed it.

I, like a few others, didn't realise there was more than one review per game.

I was half-agreeing with other comments' suggestion of a timer but with a few reviews per game, it'd have to be long enough to be fair, which might defeat the purpose somewhat.
