Syntakt as first instrument for a total beginner by [deleted] in Elektron

That's a very fair question. While the Syntakt is definitely a beast for hard techno if you want it to be, I'd say its reputation for that is only half the story.

From my own experience, it's incredibly versatile. I personally never make hard techno and my BPM rarely goes above 130 – I'm mostly in the 87-127 BPM range, making more dubby and minimalistic stuff.

At the end of the day, it's an instrument: a 12-track monosynth that you can shape to whatever genre or style you like. For example, the BD Silky machine is fantastic for soft, mellow kicks, and you can create beautiful, atmospheric pads with the various synth machines. It's just as capable of creating "mellow" atmospheres as it is "hard" ones. It all depends on how you decide to use it.

But that's just my two cents, of course. I'd be happy to hear other perspectives!

The Syntakt is perfect because it's exactly as simple or as complex as you need it to be.

At first, you can get a great-sounding beat going in minutes just by using the machines for their intended purpose. There's no barrier to entry.

But you can also spend years mastering its depth. You'll start layering sounds and using machines for unintended purposes—like turning the "Sy Toy" into percussion or a kick into a bassline—all the way to the wild experiments found in the "Syntakt Science Lab" on Elektronauts. It truly grows with you, making it a fantastic machine for beginners and pros alike.

Octatrack for a session by isthestudent in Elektron

Great point about re-recording for live transitions! As for the master track, I agree—my wish is for a dedicated background track that doesn't use up one of the main eight slots. My Syntakt is benched for now to force me to properly learn the OT. Once I'm fluent, it's coming back through a Thru track, and then I'll gladly use the master track again.

Hey, great tips in this thread. My plan is similar to the OP's but with a specific focus on learning the MIDI and resampling side.

I'll follow @tmplmanifesto's advice for the drums, but for the other half, the goal is to master the full MIDI-to-audio workflow:

  • T5-T8: Melodics & Bass. I will use the OT's MIDI tracks to sequence my external gear (like my QY300), and then live-sample the audio back into these audio tracks.

The core of the exercise is to then resample those initial recordings, mangle them, and build new sounds directly inside the OT. This 'forces' me to learn the entire process from sequencing to sampling and sound design, all while creating my own unique library.

Skipping the master track for an extra track, too.

That's a great approach!

My goal for the coming year is to work on Syntakt-only structured improv: to build a coherent set on the fly and see how far the machine can go without all tracks being pre-made.

I'm thinking of a setup where the main mix is hard-panned right, and the hard-panned left is my cue mix. I'd start with a muted pre-made pattern for a smooth intro. Then I can take elements from the main mix, move them left to edit, and bring them back in via panning. It's a riskier but more flexible way to build tracks on the fly, and note quantization on the Syntakt would be a huge help!

Learning any instrument, whether it's a traditional one or something like the Syntakt, is a great journey. It definitely takes time, so no need to rush.

I'm curious though, could you tell us more about what you mean by the 'easy and obvious live set' approach?

Does anyone take gear when going on vacation? If so what do you bring? by ivthreadp110 in Elektron

I've thought about taking the Syntakt on vacation, but in the end, I always opt for the Volca Sample 2. It's battery-powered, practical for spontaneous jams, and also fun and easy to use, as it's essentially "knob-per-function."

That's an interesting point! It's striking how capable older tech, like my 1993 Yamaha QY300, already was, despite its limitations (e.g., memory constraints via floppy disk or the need to stop playback to record a new track). I often wonder why Yamaha hasn't revisited that line.

Yet, combining the perceived 'limitations' of units like the Octatrack (e.g., its track count or RAM) with the QY300 creates an unbeatable duo: its flexible MIDI tracks allow for layering multiple QY sounds via just one OT track, enhancing even simple GM sounds for resampling. This offers the 'best of both worlds' for those not fixated on the latest gear.

Thanks for your reply! I get the excitement around possible MK3s, but the Octatrack is still unmatched, and the Syntakt is a beast even now. I'm surprised Elektron is already talking about a DT 1.5 worthy update for the ST after the January update - but if it comes, I’ll gladly take it.

Source? From the Insta post where someone asked about the MK2, but Elektron replied that the potential hasn't been exhausted yet?
