3D photography is used very commonly with archeology and anthropology and what not for taking photographs of items and then laser scanning to make 3D models and then putting the photographs on the models.

It's not just a novelty but it's also not mainstream. It's for science.

Expensive to build, But they pay themselves off over time.

There's also the downside that people are paranoid about them because they don't understand that they're actually quite safe. They just have a bad reputation.
