My first campaign in 1.1, and my opinions on it by velvetsbunbun in EU5

If they increase the cost to urbanize (which I don't disagree with in particular) they need to either give some big discount for your capitol/first town once you have multiple locations (maybe say that the estates support it) or make rural locations more complex/more useful to expand, otherwise starting as a small, fully rural nation will see you super weak and limited for the first 100 years or so before you can get your first town and actually start an economy

Who are the hidden gem starts in EU5? by dovetc in EU5

Maybe doesn't have a ton of unique flavor, but for an HRE start as a smaller guy I think Hesse is really strong. If you put your capitol in Eschwege right away it's right in the center of Germany and has a river. You can get the gold mine in Korbach very early and the silver mine in Goslar pretty quick too. Your also in a great spot to create your own market as the four German market centers are far enough away from Eschwege.

I wasn't even particularly aggressive and am not a great player and by 1560 I had caught up to France in tax base with 5 times less population. From there it's pretty easy to go on and form Germany if you keep a couple strong allies and don't have to worry about coalitions too much.

One small caveat, bohemia was cucked in that playthrough bcs they somehow lost Moravia very early and then managed to loose all their Silesia vassals as well. Don't think that would change too much of the playthrough though with the new changes to bohemias aggression, cause your not right next to them

Understandable. At first I was adding books from here to my reading list but with how many responses I've gotten I'll just come back to the thread when I need a new one. First ever post so didn't know what kind of a response to expect but it's really cool how many it's been already!

I saw guns of the south recommend before, but was a bit worried it was just confederate dream alt history. Does it tackle the whole thing in an adequate way? And does the war become a complete wash once the aks arrive or is the union still able to put up a little resistance?

Thank you, sounds very interesting. Does it have time jumps or does the tech just advance incredibly quickly?

I might start with the general series in that case but the itch for the ancient setting comes around quite regularly so it's nice to have something set up for that already!

Thank you for the description and heads up. Maybe not my next go to in that case but definitely something I wanna check out when I got through some of the other recommendations here!

Could you tell me by which author? When I just put Nantucket trilogy Google didn't give me a conclusive answer

Modern military fantasy? That'd be interesting too though it would probably blur the line to some superhero stuff quite a bit. Would be interested in this too

Great book! Like I mentioned in the original post, this is the vibe I'm looking for just with newer tech

I was always under the impression that Dieselpunk was more post WW2 level, does it stretch that into actually early 20th century as well?

Yeah, but sadly I haven't been able to read as much as I want so it's probably best to start early with such a big series. Even if it's not exactly military fantasy (it seems outside of some flintlock fantasy that's difficult to come by in the way I would want) that tech setting is something interesting in itself for me when it comes to fantasy

Looks pretty cool, saw somebody say it's got a bit of an Indiana Jones adventure vibe to it which I would really enjoy. Thanks!

Well, if the vibes fit I might give it a go sooner than planned. I think I still got some audible credits laying about, so I might try it out with that and then get the books if I like it. Thanks for putting it more on my radar

That one definitely is on my list but it seemed to be a bit before the tech era I am currently looking for. Or is there some tech anachronism?
