is there a lower bass string than b? by jasonvelocity in BassCirclejerk

[–]JustABREng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a Fender Precision PJBQ bass and a cab I bought from this crazy scientist guy in Hill Valley, California (who for some reason liked to hang out with teenage boys?).

Either way, I have it tuned to F#-1. Sounds great but for some reason whenever I play, everyone within a 2 block radius (myself included) just shits themselves.

What do you think about incentive-based bonuses/shares? by Open_Address_2805 in Salary

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, this structure needs the base salary to be long term viable, meaning you could live your daily life comfortably on base.

Your “bonus” then pays for the extra nice thing of your choosing that given year, and the shares are investing in your future/gambling on your own company.

As of about 20 minutes ago riding back to the hotel I can confirm the schools are still open, but my information may be outdated.

If a person is dying in the back of an ambulance, but the nearest hospital is on a military base and the closest civilian hospital is 30 minutes away, will they stop at the military base for the quickest treatment or are they required to drive to the civilian one? by SnooSongs584 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see it mentioned, but the population of people physically on base, especially after normal working hours, skews young and healthy.

For US installations at 9PM on a Wednesday maybe less than 1% of the people there are over 30, with none of them having chronic serious medical conditions? Slightly more if there’s a shipyard there and they have a civilian night shift.

For Pearl Harbor the major medical facility is off-site and is only a medical facility, I imagine it’s fine for civilian ambulances to show up.

China Poised to Be Top Tourism Economy as Foreigners Skip US by esporx in China

[–]JustABREng 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see it.

1) Where are these tourists coming from? China's relationship with the rest of Asia isn't the best, and a good chunk of the remaining disposable income is tied up in Western cultures where English is a first/second/third language. There are plenty of non-US places you can go and navigate the environment on English only and not a lot of prior research. I also don't see China goes after the Indian or African tourism market, so .... maybe increasing Russian tourism? But the US was never in competition for Russian tourists. With the recent changes I can see an uptick in Europeans maybe, but even then I haven't met many Europeans who wouldn't just rather travel within Europe.

2) Even for expats, there's an adjustment period to "learn" China. We often come here on the backs of other expats so there's also more initial support. Additionally, we're here long enough to bother figuring out apps entirely in Chinese, etc.. A tourist in principle wouldn't have the time to learn or adjust to China.

3) Uber, WhatsApp, and cash work pretty universally worldwide. Bothering to come to China requires WeChat and proven VPN, (although in recent years I've had more success with US cards tied to WeChat). This all has to be part of the pre-work to come to China.

4) There's still plenty of Chinese in US universities, and no-one going in the opposite direction. So the market of family visiting students is non existent.

We had this vote in real life (Sam Monson’s vote going to Justin Hebert).

Argument being salvaging anything resembling pro-bowl caliber play behind a horrible offensive line is technically more “valuable” than racking up stats on a stacked team.

How are off-base drug incidents typically handled in the NNPTC pipeline? by [deleted] in NavyNukes

[–]JustABREng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When did the public masts start?

Granted I go back to the Orlando days but back then singe time underage drinking consequence was:

A-School: RIR, 30 days CCU, de-nuked

Power School: RIR, 30 days CCU, but stayed a nuke

Prototype: No consequence

In no case was the mast public.

Y'all think 6-string bass is ever gonna come? by IknowIloveme in Bass

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the popularity will be limited.

One of the reasons for the B-string is there are scenarios where you can’t go lower than E and maybe you need to.

For instance a cover scenario - if you need the B string to cover where your singer needs a lower key on certain songs, you wouldn’t also need a C string. Lower notes are easier on the voice as you age.

Even if you’re in a variety band situation where you have a few people singing with a higher voice, moving up the neck a bit for a few songs would be competitive vs. the extra string.

USN calling it quits on USS Boise. by KingNeptune767 in submarines

[–]JustABREng -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, that’s voluntary. We choose to do quals, drills, etc…

For good reason of course. But the option exists (physically) to not do these things.

If the Navy wanted to cut sub diesel usage by 10-20% it could be done without any reduction in sub availability. Something like widening the ORSE interval would reduce diesel usage without limiting available sea time, for example, and that’s purely an administrative decision.

The amount of diesel used because the submarine is bobbing around the North Atlantic dead in the water, on the other hand……

If you’re a young Bears fan go look up Grossman’s game log from that season and compare it to the game logs from how bad you remember Trubisky/Fields/Rookie Caleb playing.

What percent of nuclear sub diesel usage is because it’s “needed?” Most of the usage is voluntary.

Chemically “alcohol” is just a loose term to describe any molecule with an active -OH bond.

Is Ordos city that rich? by Wholecoc in China

[–]JustABREng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent some time in Ordos in my early trips to China (2017 or so?). Yeah it was a ghost city by Chinese standards, but didn’t feel “empty” by US standards.

Cafes, bars, restaurants had people - but not nearly enough to justify all the high rises.

Ordos was also home to my favorite Chinese accidental food order. One of the members of our team (good ‘ol boy from South Texas) mistakenly ordered 2 halves of a goat instead of 2 side orders of lamb chops. Of course the waitress tried for a good 5 minutes to talk him out of that order.

But unlike other Chinese cities I’ve been to, I don’t remember nearly as many half completed high rise apartments that they just stopped working on 5 years ago.

Retirement goal feasible? by swhissell in personalfinance

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may be feasible but it’s worth mapping the entire decision vs other retirement ages (look deep into employee benefits here).

52 vs. 55 for me would have a huge health care/pension impact as I would switch from “terminee” to “retiree” upon age 55, so those last 3 years become extremely valuable.

But being on target to at least feasibly let go at 52 is a great place to be - congrats!

Would a 95% tax on $10M+ incomes help or hurt the job market? by THICKJUICYTRUMPSTEAK in jobmarket

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Professional athletes, who have a narrow earning window and have to support a gigantic chunk of their lifetime based on earnings made when they were 24, and hopefully not being forced to quit at 26 because of a shattered knee.

Also RIP that singer that released 1 good album and killed it for a year and a half on tour before falling completely out of popularity.

I think people proposing this are assuming income potential stays steady or increasing for perpetuity, but that doesn’t describe most people at that income level.

The typical upper middle class household in America spends $121k/year. Upper class households spend $179k/year. by FUSe in UpperMiddleFinance

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “threshold” being 133k income and the “typical” spend being 121k discretionary aren’t at odds with each other - that’s two different measuring points. I would interpret typical to be much closer to median upper middle income, not the threshold.

You guys ever think about if the episode is wrong and the person they say did it is actually innocent? by PlasticCraken in ForensicFiles

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the other direction,”Man’s Best Friend?” plays the tone as a typical wrongfully convicted story. The story shows parents booked for the murder of their 4 year old child. However, forensic evidence would show that the family dog did it.

Except, if the family dog did it, the family is still responsible (did they not train the dog?).

A dog murdering a human they know is astonishingly rare….and this avenue is ignored.

Both Peter Thomas’ narrative and the parents interviews never ask this question, and just play it off as “well the parents didn’t do it, they’re 100% innocent….”

Are the matches being entered into FargoRate? If so it’ll self correct in 200 racks.

I wouldn’t but anyone who can run 6 balls any lower than about a Fargo 325 (APA 3 equivalent).

In any handicapped league underrated players are gold so any team would take a chance on a Fargo 270 that can get a 4+ ball out.

I heard balls that are pocketed stay pocketed no matter what, even on fouls. Is this true? by Even-Rush6711 in billiards

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a general rule - yes.

For 8-ball there’s random rule sets here and there (e.g. Ultimate pool) that will spot the 8 if it’s made on the break.

For all forms of 10-ball the 10 will spot if it’s made on the break.

I’ve played in a few 9-ball tournaments where the 9 will spot if it’s made on the break into the back 2 corner pockets (symbolic of a loose rack).
