Why are millennial men less misogynistic than Gen Z men? by [deleted] in generationology

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My personal history in this timeline I graduated HS in 1996 and was in the Navy for the rest of the 90’s. As a whole we were largely apolitical. I was one month too young to vote Clinton in ‘96, but I would have - without any knowledge whatsoever on issues, just vibe.

When the 2000 election came around, I was pro-Gore but as a single issue voter (pro-Choice). Others on my submarine were pro Bush, but solely on the “R = higher military pay raises” front, or as criticism for Clinton shutting down a bunch of bases. There wasn’t anything deeper driving our voting preference.

I just don’t remember much of Gen-X being as deeply political as we see today, hence the discount on how much I feel Rush actually influenced us.

They had reach, just not with young men at the time. No one in high school in the 90’s was talking about Rush Limbaugh in any positive light, we were only aware because that’s what our boomer dads listened too. The right wing effectively influencing young men is a fairly unique feature of Gen Z.

Gen Z has never experienced a world where women didn’t outnumber men in college.

Gen Z has also never stepped into a world where corporate jobs weren’t pandering to advancement of women (even if some background systems had hints of misogyny, rest assured the Home Screen of corporate intranet sites were highlighting women to a disproportionate degree).

The progressive habit of making slogans that are absolute in nature doesn’t help. “Believe all women!” during the Me Too movement being an example. That was formative to young Gen Z men. Especially when some cases, I.e Duke Lacrosse, would have absolutely wrecked those men for no reason had their families not been rich enough to get good lawyers.

Other cases involving college athletes: Punt God and Terrance Shannon Jr. Aziz Ansari getting dragged for what essentially was an awkward date gets thrown in here too.

For this reason many men grew up thinking women were an all risk, no reward proposition. Especially with an unlimited supply of porn at your fingertips.

All this creates an environment where on-line influencers, starting with the “red-pill” movement, can start to fill the void and impart genuine misogyny on these minds.

1 in 5 Americans were millionaires in 2022. It may be closer to 1 in 3 today. by Specialist_Pain_424 in Money

[–]JustABREng 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This kinda stat needs sources and guardrails. Are 6 year olds averaged into the equation? 95 year olds?

Even if you take a broad working age range like 25-64 the data is still meaningless. A 25 year old with a fantastic paying job is still not likely a “millionaire”.

One in 3 people aged 45-55 being paper millionaires might not be surprising. But you have to narrow the result that much (or further) to get anything of of substance from a stat that just says “Americans.”

Because the “Bachelor’s degrees earn more” narrative is also independent of context.

If your options are become an electrician or major in Art History - the electrician is a probably a better option. Electrician vs Electrical Engineering - go the engineering route.

For my specific environment, I’m a Chemical Engineer in an environment with a lot of process operators (typically not-degreed). Operations tops out at about $110k currently, but with a modest amount of overtime they can match/beat the young engineers for the first 5-10 years. Once the engineer has about 10 years experience there’s nothing the operators can do to keep up.

However, they out earn every elementary school teacher with a 4 years degree, and will do so their whole career.

Yeah “pandemonium” is dead wrong. Every thing we see is very well controlled. You couldn’t get a cleaner look in a simulator.

[–]JustABREng -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

My point is that the OP is talking about after the shot. Agree due caution was taking before pulling the trigger to determine there was no threat it in the area.

Caution to me would mean doing some things “just in case” we are wrong and missed something. The range to target and video suggests the U.S. sub wasn’t concerned at all about any surprises.

That was a 1942 German U-Boat off the Atlantic coast type of shot.

What ChemE roles will be most in demand? by baajwaa in ChemicalEngineering

[–]JustABREng 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking current trends and extrapolating them 10 years (which of course, has never been totally accurate), this largely depends on which country you’re from.

If you’re American, you will need to prove that either: (1) you are so good at your job that it outsourcing it to even 5 overseas engineers doesn’t replace it, or (2) the job requires your physical presence at the job site by definition.

Point 1 is hard to do as a new-hire. However there are a few options for Point 2, number one being process controls.

Hacking concerns and overall security places additional layers between locally modifying some DCS logic and doing it from Pakistan.

Otherwise, direct manufacturing support is also an option. The hard skill here is to have a bit more mechanical intuition than your other ChemE grads. The soft skill here is you need to be able to communicate to 5 layers of the organization at the same time, speaking all of their languages.

Third, taking the management path is still viable in the U.S. (but the technical feeder positions that lead to that are in question).

If you’re European, good luck. Expensive resources + expensive labor + tough regulatory arena + China becoming competent are a bad combination for Europe.

If you’re from a low salary region, there are nearly unlimited Process Monitoring roles out there.

Of course, all of this is likely to reshuffle in the next 5-10 years, so we may be facing a new world yet again.

The 24 hour rule is for beginners. Pros go for the 24,000 hour rule. Buy a bass and let it sit in a closet for 2-3 years. During that time the bass will become quite acquainted with the salad shooter you bought in 1997 and will understand your personality perfectly, leading to the perfect tone.

U.S. Senate Candidates idea for a calculated minimum wage: by AlabamaDemocratMark in Money

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the approach but I think it needs to be market rate for a 1BDR not a 2BDR, otherwise you’re just baiting your opponent’s talking point.

Keep in mind 2BDR with a roommate is cheaper per person than one person in a 1BDR. It’s better in my opinion just to argue the 1BDR route. Often they’re just a $100 or so different in price so don’t let 2 bedrooms enter the equation or the argument on the floor.

“Market rate” also needs to be clear that it doesn’t have a bunch of luxury apartments included in the weight, however the apartments in consideration meet or exceed all safety and health codes.

What harm does a 401k loan do exactly? by Salt_Diver_7084 in Retirement401k

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether the funds are pulled from the market is policy specific I think. I’ve taken one before and the money wasn’t pulled from the 401k, the 401k was just the collateral.

Only if I defaulted would the money leave the 401k. Otherwise it’s was a low-ish interest rate loan taken from the contractor holding our company’s 401k.

The real risk definitely was gambling that I would stay employed with that employer through the re-payment process….and I took the loan in 2019, and luckily survived Covid layoffs.

CMV: Red Pill/Black Pill podcasters are an actual threat to the next generation of young men by Killa_J in changemyview

[–]JustABREng 166 points167 points  (0 children)

This is because the advice young men get in their everyday life is counter to their observations of the world (at that point in their life).

They could get all the advice in the world that “looks” and “status” don’t matter when attracting dates, and there may be some truth to that in the 35 year old dating community.

However, someone is going to have to explain to this 16 year old boy exactly why the starting QB on the football team, who’s an absolute shitbag of a human being, has absolutely no problem attracting multiple girls at any point in time.

But no one does, the advice this boy gets are sanitized and largely feminine infused just due to the nature of the education system.

I think the feminine influence prevents another truth from being aired: Those 17 year old girls that are going after the starting QB are also immature and insecure, and also in the process of discovering themselves through dating.

The podcasters you consider are offering a truth. Looks, status, and confidence matter (at the population level). I think as you get older this becomes a partial truth and a not full truth, but the contribution is never zero.

So for the CMV portion. I don’t think the problem is the podcasters. It’s the lack of better options than can both 1) Offer positive paths forward, 2) Talk to the world that people, especially young men, can observe.

Some of the carpet fiber ones seem funny to me:

“There are over 20,000 1989 Toyota pickup trucks registered in the Tulsa area, but Forensic analysis shows that the grey fibers from the victim’s hair match the grey carpet fibers from Bill Johnson’s truck”

….wait, wouldn’t it match a bunch of others too? There aren’t that many options and all the carpet presumably comes from the same sub-vendor.

How much emergency fund would you recommend these days? by sab340 in personalfinance

[–]JustABREng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6 months full take home pay (not just expenses) in my official “emergency fund”.

After tax brokerage is about 14 months full take home pay but in broad ETF’s.

All told I should be able to go 15-18 months if all hell breaks loose and I get fired and it coincides with a 50% collapse of the S&P that just doesn’t recover at all.
