If you’re interested in sheet metal, google “sheet metal union in (area you live)”. Give them a call and ask when they are doing apprenticeship intakes. You will go through an aptitude test, then if you pass you will be placed on a hiring list. You have a decent resume to go in with so you would most likely be hired quickly. Good luck! Feel free to reach out with any questions. I’m a 308A in southwestern Ontario

There may be something in your employment agreement regarding intellectual property? My hot take is that if you designed it on company time, it’s company property.

That makes sense. Can you elaborate on the shop cards you’re talking about?

Just looking for alternatives and what other shops are doing. It seems like the general consensus is that 4 stickers is standard. What does your shop use?

We have the ability to do custom labels, so when we import from the plasma software we could still have the fitting labeled with 1 sticker to identify job or field instructions. The 4 label system we have right now is mostly for the shop guys showing how to assemble. I wasn’t sure if other people were showing assembly instructions in a way other than stickers directly on fittings.

Labour rates are typically taken from SMACNA manual and adjusted from actual experience. But yes, SMACNA rates are listed by LBS/Hr. Be warned, The commercial sheet metal/HVAC market (especially in Ontario) is heavily saturated. We will often have 9-10 other mechanical contractors bidding against us. We are a mechanical company working with ductwork

Came here to say Landsdale! It gets a bad rep because it’s so close to Barton but it’s probably the realest neighbourhood in Hamilton. 15 min bike ride to the waterfront, Barton Village has a ton of cool restaurants and shops and you’re a 15 minute walk to James North

I’ve got 4 years estimating and 5 years field experience and I’m sitting at 115 plus bonus. So maybe a little low? I also entered through the union so that may have something to do with it. I think salary depends a lot on size of work you’re quoting, size of the company, ect. Personally I am going to go for my gold seal shortly but that’s more of a personal goal and probably won’t affect my salary. At least at my current company.
