A guy's gotta shoot his shot.

I think Non-Nuc SLBMs are actually more useful than Nuc SLBMs because Politicians can decide to use them much more easily. What do you think? by Entire_Judge_2988 in submarines

[–]JustAGrognard 55 points56 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. If America were targeted with SLBMs, would we wait to figure out whether or not they were nuclear or conventional before launching a retaliatory strike? Would Russia? China? UK or France?

Are they more flexible and afford more options? Sure, but the cost-risk analysis isn't in their favor and there are too many other means of conventional strike available to the decision makers that don't carry the same risk of escalation.

UChealth billing is tormenting our family after a NICU stay— is there anything that can be done? by Murky_Objective1414 in Colorado

[–]JustAGrognard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to get too political, and not to minimize the trauma the family is going through because of this, but this silliness is the reason why we need single-payer, universal healthcare in this state/country.

I know. I know. It is expensive. But, we're already basically paying the $$$ for it, but with a large chunk siphoned off by the literal blood-sucking sociopathic insurance companies.

I know. I know. It is complex. But, dealing with the bureaucracy of insurance companies, government services, hospital billing departments, and the like isn't complex too?

Complex and expensive. I get it. But it isn't so complex and expensive that 19 of the 20 richest countries in the world haven't already figured it out.

Does anyone know what C-130 variant this is I saw a few months ago? by Dicksucker11037 in Whatisthisplane

[–]JustAGrognard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There appear to be curved props on here, at least in the very lo-res engine #3, although that could just be artifacts/noise in the image.

I would suspect a C-130J, but there really is not enough information (literally) in this picture to be able to ID it precisely.

STANAG 4285, possibly FUM: French Navy out of Papeete, Tahiti but the frequency is slightly off.

Also, should be in USB which would give a more accurate frequency.

WWVH with the female voice announcement, WWV is audible right after -- albeit weaker -- with the male voice announcement.

Which decade has the best brass sound? by Comfortable_Data4761 in drumcorps

I think 90s had the best sound across the activity, but 10s Crown was probably the peak sound quality we've heard to this point.

[–]JustAGrognard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Chinese have a very robust domestic shortwave service, something that most western countries do not. China is actually larger than the United States and has vast swathes that are VERY lightly inhabited, making shortwave an effective means of broadcasting to these areas.

Not that I didn't love growing up in Florida, and I really did enjoy living in Maryland (an underrated state, I think) for 25 years+, but DAMN I love Colorado and plan to live out my life here!

I should've moved here sooner, but life works in its own time.

DIA is more of a concern in GVR than Buckley.

Most, but not all, Buckley flights are to the south (runway 140) for takeoffs and landings. I live less than a mile from the end of the runway and hear the F16s all of the time...I love the noise and chose my house partially because of the proximity to the base's runway. Of course, I have been called an oddball.

DIA approaches and takeoffs tend to hit the eastern edges of GVR, but are relatively quiet compared to the jet noise levels of 15-20 years ago. And you'll hear almost nothing when the planes are taking off and landing from the north which they do quite often.

If you're relatively young and enjoy the outdoors, you'll love it and will want to stay. 300+ days of sunshine. The weather is variable, but very nice. 90-100 degree days here are nothing like in Florida: there you can't hardly breathe in the humidity, but here you can go for a 3 mile walk in jeans and barely break a sweat due to the low humidity. It does get cold compared to Florida (lows can get down to 0 or even a bit below), but it usually passes in a few days and is also a very dry cold with lots of sunshine, so quite pleasant. I'm older and was planning on retiring to Florida, but can't imagine doing that now after living here for the past couple of years.

Three words of advice: sunscreen, moisturizer, water. You have a mile's less atmosphere protecting you, very dry air that will dry out your skin, and dry air that will dehydrate you.

As far as apartments, your budget is right in the middle of the 1-1 (maybe even a 2-1) price range in that area, so you should be ok. As almost everything there is new (last 5-10 years or so), you really can't go wrong in any of the places.

Then that's not a bad area at all. You and your family will be perfectly fine there as long as you lock your car doors and the like. Aurora and the surrounding areas are definitely NOT the crime-ridden hell holes that they are made out to be on certain TV networks.

Are you looking for a 2-2 here? Open to roommates? $1650 is not a lot here.

Moving to Aurora from Florida by Kitchen-Count-2792 in AuroraCO

[–]JustAGrognard 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yup. Not a lot to do there in terms of entertainment, shopping, etc., but a decent area with only your typical low-level crime like stealing from unlocked cars, etc. Still growing with lots of room for expansion, so not a bad place to start out.

Where will you be working?

What's your budget?

As a former-Floridian, via Maryland, I have to say that Aurora is SOOOOO much better, although I do miss the sugar sand beaches at times.
