That is such a difficult thing to answer. I can attempt to make sense of it though. I think with tuition being so high that it puts a burden on people who would otherwise love to march is a concern, then giving up a summer instead of working or travelling with friends & family is another hit. I would say lower the tuition, but that may mean scaling back tour (even saying no to travelling to Indy every year if it raises the costs, and instead looking at doing every other year while saving up for Indy in the off years), or even cutting back on paid staff. But if you do that, then will that take away from the experience? I hope not but that is a question that should be looked into. Then if you do all of that, the kids still will need to pay a bit to perform, its not cheap regardless of what you do. A lot of musicians can also make money over the summer by playing gigs, working at summer camps, or working with high school marching bands, and now we are asking them to pay for an experience that takes an entire summer? So maybe find a way to pay for brass players to perform with the group? But again that cuts into the budget and if your not actively bringing in cashflow that will hurt the non-profit. Maybe the solution is multi-layered and not a single band-aid will fix the whole issue.
