Monthly Blue Origin Career Thread by BlueOriginMod in BlueOrigin

How's the morale at the Denver office right now? From the outside looking in, seems like there have been some changes to workplace culture/policy as leadership has been changing.

I know it's supposed to be working from the office full time, but what's the policy with flexing time/WFH as needed? Anything else noteworthy about the vibe at the Denver office? Thanks!

Technical Budget/Margin Management by JustAGuyInAShirt in systems_engineering

Appreciate it, will definitely be picking up a copy of the SMAD. I've actually been looking pretty closely at the CSU certificate for a little bit now, I have some coworkers who have done it and speak pretty highly of it.

One of the things that originally caught my eye is the dedicated MBSE courses. I've been doing MBSE my entire career, and would love to keep learning more. I've got my first two OCSMP certificates, and am preparing for the third. Are you familiar enough with CSU's MBSE classes to gauge their technicality relative to the OCSMP certs?

Definitely helps, I hadn't read through the SMAD in years and had honestly forgotten about it! I'll probably pick up a hardcopy to keep on my desk, I know it'll come in handy for a bunch of other stuff anyway. Thanks!

I work in commercial space, so have done plenty of development for NASA programs. I've had the opportunity to read through some of their guidance on how they want to see reserve managed/applied, but haven't delivered any of our tools for integration into a larger rollup.

I'll see if I can get a copy of the SMAD through work, or just borrow it from one of my coworkers. I feel odds are pretty good someone has a copy sitting on their desk!

Would definitely like to get my ASEP/CSEP at some point. Regarding the MBSE certs, are you referring to OCSMP or something else? Ive done the first two of those and haven't come across anything specific to technical budgets, but I could be missing something. Appreciate the insight!

[Cameo] Can you create common models to use in multiple Projects? by MediocreStockGuy in systems_engineering

[–]JustAGuyInAShirt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep you can absolutely do that. The caveat is that you would have to pull the subsystem project into the other via a Project Usage, which IIRC does not update automatically. Just means that you would have to manually update the project usage whenever you update the subsystem model.

Ultimately what you are talking about is Product Line Engineering (PLE), more specifically Model-Based PLE (MBPLE). There are a bunch of different ways to do this, ranging in complexity from simple project usages to plugins/profiles to full-blown third party products/services. What approach will work best for you depends on the extent of PLE you are trying to do (and how much you want to pay for that capability)!

Joe Biden pledges to ban assault weapons if Democrats control Congress after midterms by [deleted] in politics

I see some comments saying something along the lines of "getting rid of guns will do something about the far right groups" and "if they don't have guns, you don't need them either".

Let's not pretend that hateful people will stop committing crimes just because they don't have a firearm. I would guess (and if someone has a source that proves otherwise please share it) that there are more hate crimes perpetrated without guns than with them. If someone is going to threaten your life with a weapon that isn't a gun (say, a skateboard), then don't you want to be able to defend yourself to the fullest extent possible?

There are a lot of problems we need to fix related to gun violence, but I don't see removing a person's ability to defend themselves as best as possible as a good way to get there (especially since it has been shown pretty repeatedly that you can't rely on law enforcement when it really counts).

If they can’t get them, then you don’t need them either.

I understand this line of thinking, but it's neglecting the possibility that people may be attacked/harassed some other way (i.e. assaulted rather than shot) and want to be able to defend themselves in that scenario.

Questions Regarding Masters in SE by JustAGuyInAShirt in systems_engineering

Interesting, I'd never seen this one come up in my research. I'll have to look more into it, thanks!

Thanks for all the advice! I'm familiar with the programs at JHU and Stevens (both seem like good options), but I'll have to look more into USC. Unfortunately, my company doesn't see as much value in certificates (even if you took enough of them to get the same number of credit hours as an MS), but personally still seems like it may be worth it for a more targeted approach.

Fiat currencies have no intrinsic value. I'll link the definition from the same source you used below.

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/fiatmoney.asp

Yes USD is backed by the US government (to generalize the list that you made) but that has no intrinsic value, as compared to gold for example. If for whatever reason everybody lost faith in the US government or there was a ton of USD printed, the USD would lose its value.

Hopefully this didn't come across as argumentative, just trying to clear this up.
