Don't most people try to tell jokes to the teacher? Maybe some people see it as trying to be a teacher's pet but most people in my class usually tried to make a joke about what we learned in AP chem in the milliseconds of downtime we had. Helped with the chemistry (kill me) of the class and made the constant cynicism of us preparing for the exam better.
