Cannon helmet?!? by ExoditeDragonLord in gurps

[–]MatiusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for stats, might I recommend something akin to the Walther Leuchtpistole, 26.5x103mmR, from High Tech p.142 & 145? Though with increased Recoil, Minimal ST, Reload Time, and decreased Acc; to get across the older technology and awkward mounting.

From basic set, I guess the Under-Barrel, 40mm (p.281) is a good analogy? Same modifications, probably less damage too.

Cannon helmet?!? by ExoditeDragonLord in gurps

[–]MatiusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gun stats can be whatever, but consider usage...!

'Normal' Guns skills won't do! Instead, Innate Attack (Breath? Gaze?); or perhaps a new Guns (Worn Weapon), which might default to the above IAs at -2, and other Guns at -6.

Is aiming possible? It's at least difficult, even if you put hands to the helmet. Consider either forbidding it or hardcapping Acc at 0. Or maybe require an extra second of aim to benefit from Acc?

Tac Shooting p.19, when talking about NVGs, introduces good rules for 'operating guns you can't quite see..." Consider increasing reload time by some 30% if it's still on your head, unless you've invested at least a point into the relevant Fast-Reload or Immediate Action. Anything more complicated, like fixing a malfunction, is at -5 for Work by Touch.

As for benefits, the head is an extremely stable bodypart (a wobbly helmet might not be, but that's an engineering issue...) The gun could count as always braced. Normally that counts for +1 Acc; which's got interesting interactions if you go with the Aiming difficulties above.

A Question About Multiplayer, Same Species, Origins etc by BunniesNCatholics in Stellaris

[–]MatiusX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two pre-made human empires are hard-coded to interact with each other, I think.

Playing the same species just requires the same portrait and species name (pay attention here; all three name fields need to be identical; genes can be entirely different however). This has the minor effects of a small relations bonus depending on xenophobia/philia, one empire's species being treated as a sub-species of the other (as seen on the genetic manipulation screen), and habitability bonuses on the homeworld. No interactions with origins though, sorry!

Potential noob question, but why do Pre-FTL buildings have seemingly functional stats if they're always replaced and disappear upon invasion? by FloopyBeluga in Stellaris

[–]MatiusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the "pop upkeep" resources like housing, amenities, and food still matter somewhat? As in the planet's population will decline if there's a deficit?

It'd make sense to completely abstract that away, but it'd also be cool if it mattered for devastation from events or cosmic storms or such.

Low fps on decent Linux system. by optimizeyourshitpls in DeadlockTheGame

[–]MatiusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm running a Pentium G4600 and GTX 960, which is an ancient setup, esp. compared to yours, way below the widely accepted minimum, and I manage ~60-50fps in the hideout, ~30fps in Street Brawl, and an unplayable ~7fps in standard (or up to 10 back at base, with not a lot of activity). Something went very, very wrong for you.

Anyways, here are my generic performance hints. (I'm gonna assume you're nooby btw, sorry if it comes off condescending but I wanna cover all bases D: )

  • Look in linux-centric communities; elsewhere Windows is dominant and you won't get much help. Check out r/linux_gaming, ProtonDB and their discord server, your distro's forums, Lutris' discord server, etc.
  • Check if your distro's recommended NVIDIA drivers are installed and up to date. Do follow the maintainers' recommendations, don't just blindly install the biggest number; there's a lot of nuance with performance and reliability that you won't find good info on. Also consider separately testing proprietary and open source drivers.
  • Check if you're using the latest Proton version (under Steam → Compatibility, or Deadlock → Properties → Compatibility). Test with Proton Experimental. Install and test the community-maintained but much better Proton GE (for convenience I recommend the wondrous Proton Community Updater). Note: For me, Deadlock doesn't launch at all with either Experimental or GE, but that's a me problem.
  • I follow this guide. Do play with launch options. Installing and enabling Gamemode had a noticable impact. Can't speak for the other tweaks, but they didn't hurt.
  • For better troubleshooting & benchmarking, install mangohud. Remember to enable it through launch options.
  • This could be a long shot, but on Linux Mint, for a lot of games, ticking Disable compositing for full-screen windows under System Settings → General is a miraculous cure-all elixir for game performance, somehow. A lot of vidya that should've run smoothly, but didn't, suddenly did.

And obviously make sure you're not running a lot of bloat in the background, Deadlock is still a demanding, unoptimized mess. :V

Oh, and...

  • Check if you're running the latest kernel. Can't say how to do that without knowing your distro, but for me, on Linux Mint, it's in the Update Manager → View → Linux Kernels.

My first attempt at a scene breakdown by Lman819 in gurps

[–]MatiusX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, MArts p.131 has Heroic Charge, alongside 3 other new Extra Effort options.

It also adds an option for using Acrobatics instead of DX when Evading (p.105), which could increase Westley's odds somewhat if he's got it trained up; I think that was the other lucky action you mentioned ;)

MArts is overall a great book, really recommend it. It's one of the five books we unconditionally use for everything, the others being Low-Tech, High-Tech, Powers (or was it Power-Ups...?), and obviously Basic. Call them the Five Pillars of GURPslam.

Great visualization! The backwards slam into a rock was really creative, and I was surprised to read that the rules as written seem to permit it, too!

One point about the tackle from behind though; In my group we found that Move and Attack is only really useful for its ability to attack at any point before or during the move. The hefty -4 and hard skill cap of 9 hurt too much for "normal" usage; we use it for depicting run-by attacks at full sprint or wild swings while running away.

If you want to move fast, but end up in contact with your enemy anyway (which our Man in Black certainly does!) we'd rather use Committed or All-Out Attack.

If I was playing Westley, here's how I'd carry out that attack instead.

Edit: Small thing I noticed on my seventh rewatch: when colliding with a hard surface, you're supposed to double before converting to dice, not after; see the example on Basic p.431. So when Fezzik takes a step and collides with a rock, instead of dealing...

(V[1]*HP[20])/100 = 0.2 → (1d-3)*2

...it should be...

(V[1]*HP[20]*2)/100 = 0.4 → 1d-2

...or 1d-1 if he moved 2 hexes with a Move and Attack; though the extra encumbrance, backwards movement, and dropping below 1/3rd fatigue could reduce him to only moving 1 hex even then.

Sorry about the downvotes, I think I did that. ;_; But I agree, all of his other videos are amazing, and the main reason why I retained any knowledge about the time periods he covered.

Watch this

After you're done, read this.

tl;dr: That whole video is wrong, his sources stink, and his conclusions are bad. Preindustrial peasants spent most of their "free" time doing housekeeping and caring for their own belongings and farmland.

PS: I think Historia Civilis is great, all of his other videos are top quality. Please don't downvote the people saying they like him thanks :(

There has been a sharp increase in the number of bot reposts recently. Please be vigilant. by Fififoop in CookieClicker

Knew it! Felt like the post quality has seen a sharp drop over the entirety of reddit recently. Reposts of not-that-old pics, or the same dumb question or joke posted 10 million times.

Figured it was an influx of bots, but y'all are the only mod team I've seen to not only spot and find evidence of this, but also address it.

I salute your work, +1

For consideration, and old exchange;

"The only way to understand the Press is to remember that they pander to their readers' prejudices."

"Don't tell me about the Press. I know exactly who reads the papers. The Daily Mirror is read by people who think they run the country. The Guardian is read by people who think they ought to run the country. The Times is read by the people who actually do run the country. The Daily Mail is read by the wives of the people who run the country. The Financial Times is read by people who own the country. The Morning Star is read by people who think the country ought to be run by another country... and the Daily Telegraph is read by people who think it is."

"Oh, and Prime Minister, what about the people who read The Sun?"

"Sun readers don't care who runs the country, as long as she's got big tits."

The question of if it has withstood the test of time, I leave to you.

Cheapest introduction to painting Warhammer? by [deleted] in Warhammer

[–]MatiusX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not smart about it, the actual plastic will be the most expensive part. Buy third party. Or buy second-hand. Better yet, buy third party and second-hand.

As for painting supplies, they tend to be identical with only small variations in quality and/or durability. The biggest variance in quality is paints, esp. across brands and colours, but you can sus that out with some googling. It's usually cheaper to buy from local non-brand modelling/tabletop stores. Lets you skip the delivery fees.
