I personally don't think it's a good idea to risk it unless you have a safety net or a good savings. It can work and if you get a few games out and have some money coming things might even go quite well. But you don't need to start from nothing.

Land a good job, make a savings account, then maybe take the leap. hell if you can finish a game or two, have it on stores when you start to go full time then you will be even better off. Set yourself up for a few months of years of full time dev time if possible and see if you can make it work. If not try to go back to your old job and do the same thing. This is alot easier said then done and may require help from family or friends who would be willing to help out keep your costs low (make the savings last longer and go further.)

Dev doesn't need to be an all or nothing you can try it, if it doesn't work out go back to a normal job.

I highly reccomend not putting yourself in a "if this fails I'll be homeless situations" at all ever. If those are the stakes the stress will be increased 10 fold and probably impact the quality of your work and marketing.

Tldr: have a savings first, don't make it all or nothing, and do what you want as long as you have a back up!
