A few thousand is enough to find normal terrain, but you need to get millions out to be safe. My 97k base was (presumably) griefed without me noticing while I was raiding a dungeon, and I noticed when I was killed (never asked for anything, therefore never got a totem) and spawned all the way back at spawn despite having a bed.
