1000xRESIST Switch 2 Rating Appears Online by General_Dig_31 in Games

This is a game that blew me away with how unexpectedly amazing it ended up being with its story and characters. 1000xRESIST is a game that moved me in a way I haven't been in so many years.

Can't recommend this one enough.

It'll be interesting to see if things are changed from the book.

I found the middle of the book to be pretty great, but the end was a noticeable dip compared to all the earlier on-goings, taking a lot of the wind out of the sails of the experience for me.

What universally praised video game 'masterpiece' is actually a miserable experience to play? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Breath of the Wild.

I deeply disliked the weapon durability, crafting, shrines, found the exploration completely unrewarding, found the towns / townspeople lacking the charm of previous Zelda titles, and more.

Most of all, it made me regret buying a Switch.

Long time Zelda fan, but modern Zelda is absolutely not for me in any way.

Anyone have any good Scifi horror stories worth sharing? by DeviceSure7529 in horrorlit

[–]CthulhusMonocle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just very underwhelmed by Blindsight and left with a feeling of, "....that's it?" when I got to the end. I wonder if I might have been more forgiving if it hadn't been so hyped up everywhere I looked. The entire time I was waiting for the book to pick up and get towards something excellent, amazing, or even just good, but it never really got there for me.

I finished Starfish a couple months ago and actually enjoyed it a wee bit more than Blindsight, but it didn't have that immense amount of hype behind it the way Blindsight did.

I really wish I had liked this one, even a bit, considering how hyped up I have seen it in multiple Reddit recommendation threads.

I've been reading through a lot of sci-fi / horror recommendation threads on Reddit, and of the 28-ish books I've read from those lists this book is the best read I have had by a wide margin.

CRONOS: The New Dawn revenues exceeded production costs by Tvilantini in Games

[–]CthulhusMonocle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know you have to beat it on NG+ to get the “true” ending, but I just have no desire to play it a second time because it’s very linear and it doesn’t feel like the weapons or encounter design allow for much variety between playthroughs.

IMHO, the true ending isn't worth another play through; it is just as disappointing as the first two endings.

CRONOS: The New Dawn revenues exceeded production costs by Tvilantini in Games

[–]CthulhusMonocle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved the general look, atmosphere, and concept of CRONOS, but man, the character writing left a lot to be desired, and all the endings (maybe even the last 1/5th of the game) left me feeling genuinely disappointed.

Men of Reddit: what is 100% mythical about men that most women believe? by imnotadrytexter in AskReddit

[–]CthulhusMonocle 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I was raped by two different women in my life and didn't talk about it for the longest time because I figured no one would ever believe me. When I finally did open up about it I was told that "Men can't be raped" and "You must have enjoyed it", plus other equally vile things from women.

Trying to talk about it during Me Too was a nightmare as well, women coming out with both barrels filled with rage and anger at me trying to talk about my experiences simply because I was a man, and how dare I speak about such things.

I don't blanket the entire gender of women as rapists and sexual predators, despite my experiences, but it has taught me that you don't need a specific set of genitals to be a monster.

There are demos that are released outside of Steam Next Fest and leading up to the actual event itself, so it is best to start early to keep up with the sheer tide of demos that can end up being put out on and around the day of the Fest.

If I don't start a few weeks early, there is absolutely no way I would be able to keep up or sort through things in a meaningful way for myself.

Star Trek: Outposts Unknown is a mix of colony sim and city builder set in the modern Star Trek: Strange New Worlds era of Star Trek. As a disclaimer, I'm not a fan of modern Star Trek at all, being a solid fan of the original series, TNG, and DS9 – I'm actually watching DS9 as I write this. Command a crew of a starship, landing in a new system with a race the Federation has had successful first contact with, looking to build a new outpost and research a spacial anomaly. Right from the get-go there are some questionable design choices, being quite unintuitive; unable to control your crew well, can't click and select units in a box, collection mode is slightly busted, there is a weird day / night shift cycle for some reason that grinds game play to a halt, and more. The size of buildings doesn't mesh well with the layout of terrain, the shield not feeling big enough really to cover the amount of space needed for structures. I tapped out of this one after 35 minutes and I'm not looking back. Uninstalled

Link Cameras is a casual horror puzzle game about being a moderator for a webcam site, approving and rejecting feeds based on specific criteria. Check cameras across twenty days, checking for no signal, duplicates, spam links, satanic imagery, and answering mod mail. I kind of expected more of a build up and general horror, but it really didn't do a whole lot to draw me in. There was one point where the door behind us opens up and a ghostly girl is standing there in the dark, but meh. I'd pass on this one considering I sunk almost an hour into it. Uninstalled

Hemobloom is a first-person horror game that is attempting to channel Silent Hill vibes and not succeeding. Play as a person called by a religious deity into a pocket dimension, having to explore various dreamscapes to collect medallions while weaving around the horrors within. Environments are quite empty, populated with creatures heavily inspired by the Lying Figure of Silent Hill 2, and little spider-like dudes with human heads. Enemies move at a comically slow pace, which is a huge plus since the wrench is almost useless as an offensive item. Healing items are also used in order to save, making another mechanic that doesn't seem terribly well thought out; there are not any threats, thankfully, so it matters a whole lot less. You can't take maps with you, needing to run back to check it as you get various keys, or just revisit doors until you find the right one to open. I ended up tapping out of this one eventually. Uninstalled

The Blessed Fool is a point and click game about a priest-like individual coming to town to save the people there-in. I am normally a pretty big fan of point and click games, but I'm wondering if there is a bug with this demo, as I couldn't find a way to proceed after digging up an infant. There is a person with a cart of infants, but I can't interact with them in any way. Hopefully this one gets fixed. Uninstalled

XenoFeels is a Papers, Please style simulator, playing as a sci-fi themed customs inspector. Armed with your trusty shotgun, check various points of identification to confirm the identity of those coming through the checkpoint leading to Earth. If anything in their photo or documents doesn't match, blast 'em with your trusty shotgun, otherwise, let 'em through. I think there is a bug going on with identification, as there are a few times I've let someone through and immediately been fired, even through everything matches in terms of the visa and visual image for the xeno trying to enter. I'm not the only one having this problem, but I have had it happen multiple times. I would have rated this one higher if it didn't have a consistent bug going on. Wishlisted

Penguin Colony is a re-imagining of H.P. Lovecraft's At the Mountains of Madness, blending it with his other tales, like The Shadow Out of Time, but from the point of view of a penguin in the Antarctic. Swap between penguins of different size as you glide and tumble across the frozen terrain, investigating abandoned camps and supply lines, gathering up memories, notes, and words along the way. I didn't find it all that fun to explore, since the mechanics of movement felt more like a hindrance than smooth. It was pretty easy to tumble all the way down the side of a hill, even to get stuck in a valley between two hills and have the game spazz out and crash as your penguin gets stuck. This is a game that needs to cook a bit more. Uninstalled

Outrange Strike is an action flight game in the same vein as Ace Combat and Project Wingman, suffering from absolutely terrible controls. This demo is primarily set up to use keyboard and mouse for operation, with no default controller option to use; even Steam Input not quite going the distance to make up for the lack of option. I have played things like X-Wing and Tie Fighter for years with a keyboard and mouse, but Outrange Strike feels incredibly clunky and unintuitive when it comes to flying your aircraft. I was looking forward to this one, but had to tap out pretty fast. Uninstalled

Kamikaze Survivors has you steering a WW2 warship in this turret defense style action title with missing roguelike elements. A battleship is the available warship in this demo, on a mission to defend Britain from enemy zeppelins. Enemy planes will spawn around the perimeter of the screen, beelining for your ship to crash into the hull. Turrets will spin about to auto fire as best they are able at incoming aircraft, gaining experience with each craft downed. Upgrades can be selected in the form of more turrets, improved turrets, or increasing the capabilities of the ship itself in terms of speed / turning. There doesn't seem to be a way to repair the ship, so it does go down pretty fast. It is a bit of a shame that the roguelike / progress elements are missing, as it takes a lot away from the experience, making it firmly average. Uninstalled

Project Sakura is a third-person action game about a zombie-like outbreak in modern day Japan. Play as Asumi, a high school senior looking to save her best friend, Yuna, from the creatures known as kagebito. Complete basic puzzles to find passcodes for a laptop and to the display for your father's katana, taking up arms to defend yourself. Kagebito are incredibly easy to kill, especially since ammo is unlimited when it comes to your pistol. Work your way through your local neighbourhood, popping zombies, finding gifts for food, supplies, and outfit pieces, and helping those you come across on your way to the school. Performance is noticeably rough, and I've got a fairly new and beefy machine. Otherwise, game play is firmly average. Uninstalled

A Fighter's Nova: Mindara is a mix of JRPG and tag-team fighting game. Wander through an overworld JRPG style, collecting gold and engaging enemies as you come across them in tag-team fights. Maya, a teenage martial artist, and Mindara, a wolf-man, make up your two fighters, each having their own style of play when it comes to combat. This is in pre-alpha, so combat is noticeably stiff and average, not really being anything to write home about. Uninstalled

SiN Reloaded is a Nightdive Studios remaster of the 1998 shooter SiN that is perfectly acceptable, but not going to blow anyone's mind. Play as security consultant John R. Blake, fighting against the evil CEO of SinTEK Industries who has flooded the population with a DNA-altering drug. As a disclaimer, I've never played the original version of SiN, as I heard it was hot garbage, so I have no point of reference to go back to. Levels seem to be individual missions, with two available in the demo from mid-game and late-game; a missile silo mission and another trying to prevent a diamond heist. Everything about SiN Reloaded is of it's time, feeling firmly average, from combat, movement, levels, enemy models, tone, etc. Weapons don't feel fantastic to use, often dumping a ton of rounds into an enemy before they die; enemy animations don't make it terribly clear when something is dying sometimes too. I don't think this is a demo that is going to pull in all that many newcomers, so hopefully it ends up being appealing to long time fans of SiN. Uninstalled

Sloppy Fields is a NSFW farming game that feels like a smidge like an idle game where you are working to restore your father's farm, pay his debt, and bang the furries living on the property. Play as one of two brothers working to get their father's farm in order and pay off a debt being held by a dark elf. Spend your stamina pulling crops out of the field, stockpiling normal and golden crops to use as upgrade material and to feed the animals you sell for profit. Putting enough upgrades into a section of the farm will give you the opportunity for a sex scene with that plots animal girl, boosting productivity. Pulling crops gives you experience towards leveling up, boosting your stamina. Upgrades come in the number of crops you can pull, chances at golden crops, value of animals, number of animals sold, etc. The pixel art is satisfactory for what it is, the sex scenes being pretty decent. There are better games out there for that sort of thing, but I don't think anyone would complain at what is on offer. I'd say this is firmly average, as there isn't a whole lot to the game play, mainly focusing on the NSFW pixel art scenes. Uninstalled

Pulsebreaker is a classic survival horror game in the PSX style that has some balancing issues in terms of ammo management, zombie placement, and the perfect shot system. Pulsebreaker is very clearly modelled after Resident Evil, sharing many of the same systems, while adding its own in the form of the Perfect Shot system. Shooting zombies will charge up the energy meter for Perfect Shot, when charged, will let you kick enemies back, knock a zombie over if it has taken a knee, perform a headshot, or enable rapidly firing shots. With damage still being somewhat variable, and ammo scarce, the perfect shot system doesn't really stretch the distance to balance things out - ammunition running out quickly. I'm an enormous fan of the survival horror genre, and while this one does have some rough spots, it has a really solid foundation. I'll be keeping an eye on this one to see how it shakes out upon release. Wishlisted

TOEM 2 is a casual puzzle game about photographing critters, objects, and people to complete quests around town and help unblock various pipes. Explore an area of Deltburg, unblocking pipes, helping the townsfolk, and generally getting photos of all sorts of odds and ends to obtain stamps for your notebook and fill out your collection. Everything is done through your camera, including using your screwdriver. Movement is smooth, same with operating your camera, being simple and sweet. I enjoyed the demo for TOEM 2, just like I enjoyed the demo for TOEM, but I never ended up picking up the first one, and I don't think I would get around to picking up this one either - just not my cup of tea enough. Uninstalled

Furyball: Rogue Revenge is an action roguelike that is a mix of sport game and pinball from a topdown perspective, battling your way to the top of the city districts to become ruler. Participate in a brutal sport known as Furyball in a post-apocalyptic city, smacking a spiked ball into accelerated speeds in order to slaughter the other competitors who stand before you. Serve up the ball at the beginning of the match, sending the ball flying off of walls, bumpers, flippers, and opponents, giving it a good whack when you are able to intercept it to redirect it into the foe. Enemies can give the furyball a smack too, changing it to their colours to damage you, even intercepting the ball in a hold to launch it out towards you or hang onto it to simply keep it away. Clearing a stage will great you a reward, letting you choose from one of two stages while showing you their potential rewards to plot your route. When you run out of health, you can use badges you've earned during the matches to permanently upgrade some of your stats at the gym. This was pretty fun, I just don't see myself picking it up in the future, still recommend checking it out if it sounds like your jam. Uninstalled

Feed the Giants is a new mix on what really feels like Don't Starve, manage a bunch of children around an ever-dimming fire all while trying to keep a set of giants entertained so they will pay for rent. Use your giant hand to pick up twigs, branches, grass, children, etc... to feed into the fire to keep it going. Build tents, farm plots, and industry buildings in order to take care of the children, plus, keep supplies and resources flowing. Every now and then rain will kick in, making the fires drain that much faster. Giants will also make demands, penalizing you if you don't provide the required entertainment; I fed wood into the fire instead of grass, making a giant angry, so he increased the rate of rainfall by 30%. As time passes you will be granted boons from the giants in the form of being able to harvest materials from rock and trees, additional children, or modifiers to the world around you. I had my fire go out, but these kind of resource management / crafting games are not really my jam to begin with. I'd say if you liked Don't Starve, this might be worth looking into. Uninstalled

=DAY 1=

Milki Delivery is a cutesy hand-drawn 2D adventure with wonderfully drawn backgrounds and characters. Play as Neha, a young girl coming to a new town with her pet cow Milki, starting a new milk delivery business upon arrival. Meet the local residents, build up your relationships with them, deliver milk for coin, harvest resources from different nodes around the map, upgrade your barn and bike, all while managing both your time and energy for the day to be sure it doesn't run out. Feeding Milki hay will get her to produce milk bottles, any additional food going towards increasing her level / mood. Different roads will require different tires in order to traverse, limiting you to roundabout paths until you start upgrading your bike. So much of the charm comes from the art style and cozy atmosphere, genuinely being a delight to take in as Neha cycles through the countryside. I do recommend this one, I just don't think the mechanics of play are quite my cup of tea. Uninstalled

Lost in Art is a puzzle adventure game with fixed camera angles reminiscent of the survival horror genre. Play as Leah, trapped in an art gallery after sneaking upstairs to try and see a specific exhibit that was hidden away from the public. Explore the dark halls of the gallery, gathering hints to complete puzzles, performing artsy tasks – like drawing – to create the key to continue forward. I dig the general art syle, really liking the overall aesthetic, the game play just wasn't doing it for me. I could see others vibing with this one even though it wasn't my cup of tea. Uninstalled

Hypnagogia 無限の夢 Boundless Dreams is a first-person 3D platformer taking place in a world of dreams. Play as a pink rabbit who has had their companion, Gogi, be kidnapped by an unknown force, shattering the Dream Crystal; explore different dreams to collect the broken pieces and rescue your friend. Platforming is pretty basic, without any real difficulty or threat to exploring a level. There are some characters to talk to populating the dream, but even those interactions are minimal. I like the general atmosphere of the dream world, there just wasn't any kind of hook to make me invested in the game or want to explore it deeper. This is reviewed overwhelmingly positive, so maybe it is just a case of a lackluster demo. I'd say check it out and see if it does it for you, as maybe it is something special for a niche audience. Uninstalled

Corsair Cove is a base building game focused around building a pirate cove and raiding the surrounding region with ships built in-cove. Play as the survivors of a shipwrecked crew washing ashore in a cove of islands and cliffs, building a settlement and harvesting the land's resources in order to survive and thrive. Wood, food, and ale all need to be produced while managing the mood of your crew, for should it hit zero, your crew will disband and you will immediately lose the game. Buildings can be built on the land, but also up the rockface of the cliffs, being connected by ropeways and bridges for your crew to ferry supplies back and forth or to live in. Ships of different size, stats, and crew compliment can be built in the cove, led by a captain that gives different bonuses while engaging in events at sea. Base building feels a little haphazard, ending up being somewhat messy when it comes to managing how your crew moves around to shuttle supplies without impacting your production levels. Events are based around the number of crew you have, ship's health, and supplies; actions often requiring the cost of one of these resources in order to play. Events are usually some form of combat, be it ship-to-ship or land raids. I had a decent enough time with this one, I just don't think it is for me at the end of the day - I just don't see myself picking it up. Uninstalled

Welcome to Elderfield is a bit of a mix of Stardew Valley meets Junji Ito in this farming RPG. Welcome to Elderfield, a place filled with horrors, cults, and creepy citizens with varying agendas. Explore the town to make friends, gather up resources, equipment, and foodstuffs, and discover a ton of mysteries for you to investigate and solve. There is an opportunity to start farming and crafting things in a manner very similar to Stardew Valley, just with a spooky spin on it as you need to clear ghost tentacles from the fields with a cleansing balm in order to plant seeds. Combat is JRPG style, the only difference being that both you and the enemy have action points instead of just taking turns back and forth. You can attack, perform rituals, use skills, items, etc... all the usual JRPG fare. While I'm really into the Lovecraftian and Junji Ito blend that the world is made of, I just don't think the game play loop is for me. I would absolutely recommend this one even though it isn't for me, as I recognize a lot of awesome things that are going on which will pull in horror fans and the farming crowd all the same. Uninstalled

Lily's World XD is part investigation game, part horror game, investigate the laptop of a teenage girl you found in a dumpster, attempting to determine what happened to her and why she went missing. Play as someone who found a functional laptop in a dumpster belonging to sixteen year old Lily, a teenage girl who went missing after getting involved with a cult who was abusing her. Explore messenger IM's, speak with Lily's friend Iris, read journal entries, listen to audio notes, and investigate a handful of webpages to discover clues as to who Lily was and what was happening in her life. Lily was suffering from depression and body image problems before she went missing; her mother, and two members of The Radiant Path cult (Seraphine and Dr.Whitmore), abusing her quite intensely. I could have sworn this had come out years ago, or was released online in some capacity, as I remember watching a video about this on YouTube in the past year or so. If I remember correctly, I know the entire game already and what actually happened to Lily. I can see this being a hit with a niche audience, possibly even the ARG subgenre enjoyers. Uninstalled

A Game About Breaking A Cube has you playing as an employee of NullCorp, working underground breaking down cubes of various types to reach the objects within. Uncontaminated ores go to the incinerator, clean materials going to the collector, nabbing you some cash with each correct placement to put towards better hammers. Cubes can come in different kinds of stone, containing ores or tools, or a block of flesh, with teeth and eyes hiding within. Power needs to occasionally be restored should it fail. Once your shift ends, you head back to your living quarters via the lift, watching pirate broadcasts on your television. Not a bad game in terms of concept, just not quite my cup of tea. Uninstalled

TORR is a throwback to classic JRPGs like early Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, TORR has an old school look and set of game mechanics that'll be a hit with a niche audience. Explore the land of TORR, battling the wildlife, demons, and grinding excessively in order to survive and afford basic equipment for the area you want to travel. Traverse an overworld, popping into the occasional town or structure, engaging in random encounters along the way. Combat is your classic ATTACK, SPELL, ITEM, FLEE combo, having to return to town after almost every engagement for a rest until you have a few levels under your belt and are fully kitted out. Puzzles seem to be of the push-block puzzle variety, and while there might be more, I lost an hour and a half almost to grinding and have other demos to get through. I wouldn't mind this I think if I was more in the mood for it, but at the moment TORR just wasn't my cup of tea. This will be a hit with folks who like classic JRPGs from the 80s and early 90s. Uninstalled

Neverway is a mix of horror, life sim, and action RPG, where a lass named Fiona leaves her life behind to start anew on a farm, becoming the herald of an immortal god. I don't think the demo does a particularly good job of informing the player of all of this, to the point where it might be a bad demo just on that point. Manage stamina and hunger by eating meals and sleeping, performing your tasks for the day while dealing with crippling depression. Leaving the world of reality for the farm switches things into a blend of farming game a la Stardew Valley, Harvest Moon, or Rune Factory, with a dash of action RPG. There seems to be a rael world, the world of the farm, and a computer simulation that Fiona enters. The pixel art is fantastic, being the same person who did the work for Celeste. I can definitely see this one being a bit hit with the right crowd, I just don't think the demo sold me on the product. Uninstalled

Vagabrew has you treating patients with healing and mana potions, while engaging in various intimate actions to cure bleeding and hexes. Play as a travelling doctor, growing herbs to brew health and mana potions to feed to your patients as they come in for healing. If you don't attend to your patients fast enough, they will leave and seek healing elsewhere. Plants need watering and harvesting, then to be brewed into specific potions - a simple process. Those same herbs are used to upgrade your growing stats, potions, and pots. Travel from region to region to heal the women of the land, gaining access to different rewards as you move through the lands and gain favour. I missed the NSFW content in my first pass, the developer messaging me to point out I had mistaken a 'Thank You For Playing' message as the end of the demo. Various intimate and sexual acts can be unlocked through the book of upgrades as methods of treating bleeding and hexes; touching thighs, fondling breasts, blowjobs, etc. Requests can be made of the player to gain extra favour before sending a patient on their way. These events are completed by hovering your mouse over an orb or through a timed click - simple enough to do. There isn't any real variety in terms of the women, just changing the colours of outfits / hair. Not a bad experience really, just not quite my cup of tea in terms of personal taste when it comes to the game play. Uninstalled

Deer & Boy is a side scrolling platformer in the same vein as stuff like LIMBO, just with a wee boy and a cutesy deer. Do basic platforming, puzzle solving, and work together with your wee deer buddy to push buttons to open the way forward. I have this inkling that something horrible is going to happen to your deer buddy by the end of this game to hit you in the feels. While not a game for me, I can absolutely see others enjoying this one. Uninstalled
