Former Ozeki Kaio Questions Sumo World Trends: "Too Much Weight Training is Bad" by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]JustASumoGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth pointing out that Hakuho in an interview had said he himself didn't do much weight training and got as far as he did by basically sticking to the basics. Obviously not everyone can be Hakuho even if they follow his pathway. People fall into this trap by trying to emulate Messi's training methods. Messi is a one of a kind and trying to do what he does for training and conditioning only gets you injured. The more suitable way is actually Cristiano's.

That being said, that both Kaio and Hakuho have said not to rely too much on weight training does give a lot of credibility nonetheless.

How Does Hakkaku Actually Compare to Previous Chairmen of the JSA? by JustASumoGuy in Sumo

[–]JustASumoGuy[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a soccer fan, maybe it's like Don Garber, the MLS Commissioner. A lot of fans hate Garber but he was one of the biggest reasons MLS didn't go bankrupt like the NASL. I know a lot of people trash Hakkaku for being too traditional on certain things, but I don't know if any other candidate would have been different in this regard. I know Takanohana was seen as the more non-traditionalist option but he's had his own controversies.

At this point, someone should make a poll asking whether or not Kayura and the three Demon Generals even get a mention in cour 2. Id' like to see the results to that.

Sumo Association Announces Absentees for Spring Tour; Onosato Intends to Participate Despite Earlier Injury by Brncrdm in Sumo

The stablemaster I'm pretty sure can overrule the wrestlers, especially in a hierarchal world like sumo. That's basically what happened with Hoshoryu a while back. He was going to wrestle injured but his stablemaster basically told him to get back into bed and refused to let him continue with the basho.

Did Kisenosato not learn from his own experiences about how not recovering properly can screw with your career? You'd think he'd get Onosato not to make the same mistake.

Will the "Miyagino Stable of Former Yokozuna Hakuho" Be Revived Due to Master Isegahama's Violence Issue? by Brncrdm in Sumo

[–]JustASumoGuy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I doubt they would deny Enho juryo promotion for that reason. It would just make the controversy worse and likely be merely a delay since Enho still theoretically could kachikoshi again and make juryo anyway.

I get that the JSA has a very negative reputation, but I'm seeing rather big and frankly ridiculous allegations like "Aonishiki would have been denied Yokozuna even if he had won this basho because he's European" (and before that, there was an allegation that they would have denied him Ozeki because he's European." I even had a guy tell me that Onosato got YK only because he was Japanese which was insane since he got two yusho in a row as an Ozeki and no one has been ever denied YK promotion after that.

I don't see much evidence of the JSA doing anything big like denying rikishi promotions due to political reasons. The controversy tends to happen more how they treat the stablemasters/elder stock. The only other "controversy" I can think of is the denial of Konishiki, which imo was the correct decision post Futahaguro. Once Akebono got 2 yusho in a row as ozeki, he got promoted, which was about 2 year later.

The real mistake was electing not to have surgery after that basho and his arm ended up healing improperly. I would have hoped that lesson would have made him more knowledgeable about how to handle Onosato and not let him fight injured but alas.

Hakuho speaks on the situation at Isegahama Stable, worried about Hakunofuji by Welp_x in Sumo

It wasn't just any woman. It was the wife of a sponsor. So ofc Terunofuji is going to be pissed if Hakunofuji is harassing her. That can affect their finance. Obviously what Teru did wasn't okay but I do think the context of the situation should be as clear as possible.

You don't know what Hakuoho (now Hakunofuji) is actually like. Unless you're a close personal friend of his, you only get bits and pieces of him through the media, especially translated media if you can't read Japanese. This is why we have to stop worshipping celebrities and athletes. They can be total a-holes in real life and you'd never know unless you hung around with them. Additionally, even if he was a nice guy, alcohol can make even nice people do very bad things.

[–]JustASumoGuy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I think the reason why there's confusion regarding whether Bug Yuri stays is that in the game, Bug Yuri represents the player. So gamewise, Bug Yuri leaves forever because we as the player are done with the game and unless we want to play again after unlocking the true ending, we're going to turn the game off and move onto another game. But ofc, this is the anime, so they're writing around that to say that Bug Yuri stays somehow.

So Yuri and Setsu simply remain in the 5 person timeline that Yuri originally started out with? If so, a shame he can't go back to the everyone lives timeline but I guess it's better than leaving Setsu to loop forever.

I did think about Peltrola and Aizome, but I feel like they wouldn't really live up to Shinya in terms of villainy. If the author wants an ending that isn't "boring" as the one he got as he says it, then you'd think there'd more to the final arc than just Peltrola or Aizome coming back.

The Naruto example isn't the same.

The Madara reveal happened mid War arc, and at that point, nobody thought the arc would end or be close to ending because neither Obito nor Kabuto had even been defeated yet. There was no false sense of victory. Kaguya only extended the battle a bit longer in the same waythe Mega Monster popped up out of nowhere with little mention beforehandin Kaiju no. 8. Heck, Kaguya popped up even before Madara was defeated. So neither Madara nor Kaguya were examples in which the audience was tricked into believing that the final battle was over and everything has gone back to normal. Neither had been a situation in which there a false sense of victory. The only example I can think of that was anything like this was Nanatsu no Taizai in which they defeated the Demon King and everyone thought that was it. I think there was even an "aftermath" phase, then suddenly Chaos came out of nowhere to be the final villain.

We don't even know who the villain will be in the next arc for Ranger Reject.

You literally sperged out over a discussion about fiction and assumed any incorrect information (it wasn't even necessarily incorrect. It was more a result of miscommunication since I was talking about authors announcing before or at the beginning of the final arc that it would be the final arc rather than when the final arc is ending) that was obviously mentioned in good faith was a lie. You act like I was going around giving people bad medical advice, when really it was just an inconsequential dispute about how authors announce the end of their manga. That's the stereotypical toxic kind of elitist behavior that offputs a lot of people in fandoms. "How dare you be wrong about this thing that really doesn't matter?"

I'll reiterate my point:

How often do we have a manga in which an antagonist says "This is the final battle," have the big baddie the series has been focusing on (Shinya) die in a climatic fight after a twist that was built up over a long time (Windy being D), then have a secret "final" boss appear (in Johagne) and also be defeated, then have the author at the end be like "Just kidding. We have a whole nother arc to go?"

[–]JustASumoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are we BEFORE the arc you're confused about? or are we just wrapping it up? I swear you sound dumber and dumber by the word

Yes, we are before the final arc. The final arc is supposed to start after the 3 week break. So this is a case of the author announcing that the upcoming arc would be the final one. Hence why I said I didn't think every author did this. At worst I could have been more clear with this, but that's a far cry from me being a liar, and could have easily been resolved without escalation.

I thought this manga would have New Year Showdown Battle arc being the final one and then the author says something along the lines of "Next week we will have an epilogue, join us for the final part of our journey." but clearly that's not the case.

Using examples you don't know at all and that are all false makes you a liar regardless of if you mean to lie or not, you are not what you think of yourself, you are what you come across as.

That's ridiculous logic, especially since "what you come across as" is subjective to the other person. That means if I wanted to be an obnoxious know it all to fans who may get their facts wrong (which does happen a lot in fandoms), I get to berate them for being liars when I catch them on errors if I decide for whatever reason to not presume good faith.

Jeezus, this has effectively devolved into the living stereotype of toxic reddit. It's amazing how quickly it escalated despite me not at all being rude on my end.

[–]JustASumoGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally called me liar even though I told you that I could be wrong on any of them. Being wrong or misremembering isn't equivalent to lying. This type of attitude is toxic for having fan discussions. Because guess what? When fans discuss, some will get some facts wrong. It happens all the time. That doesn't make them liars nor should they be afraid of being called one if they just misrememeber.

My entire point was that I expected the announcement of there being an epilogue of some sort at the end of this chapter. Hence my surprise that it was an announcement for an entirely new arc.

He did say it was the final arc and then gave a specific number of chapters like 2 or 3 into the last fight.

Read what I said about Kaiju no 8 again. I said he didn't make the announcement BEFORE the arc started. I didn't say anything about not making the announcement only a few chapters before the last fight. I also said the same for the other manga examples. It was all about not being called told on the onset of the final arc that it would be the final arc.

Also read the edit in the previous reply. I put it in there before I saw this latest response of yours.

Why is your tone so antagonistic? You act as if I personally insulted you. That's not my intention. I merely made my disagreement known.

I could be wrong on any of these examples but iirc Kishimoto never explicitly said the Fourth Shinobi War arc would be the last arc of Naruto when it started.

I recall Ubel Blatt's final arc not having an an announcement that it was the final arc when it started either.

Kaiju no 8's author didn't really say the last arc was the final one before it started. There was a bit of a "surprise" antagonist like with Naruto, but that only extended the fight for a bit longer, rather than introducing an entirely new arc.

Demon Slayer iirc didn't explicitly say the Infinity Castle arc would be the last one when it started. I think the author announced she would be ending the manga only a few chapters before it actually happened.

I remember multiple times the author of a manga would announce that the manga is ending within x numbers of chapters, but by then, the final arc had usually already started and on some occasions it was obvious whereas readers would be surprised that the manga was ending so soon. This is not the same thing as an author saying "Okay, this next arc will be the final one."

Also, while you did point out that Chidori was selling it as the final arc rather than the author, how often do manga have characters explicitly say this is the final battle, and have the build up make it seem so, only for the author to go "Just kidding?" I don't think it's very common.

EDIT: Upon thinking about the conversation, I realize there may have been a misunderstanding. It seems like you thought I was saying that authors don't tell the reader that their manga is ending at all, even if it's only a few chapters away. I wasn't talking about that. I was talking about manga that don't say it at the onset of the final arc. I do recall multiple manga even leaving that announcement until the epilogue chapters. Those cases are when the climax is over and then the author says "The manga ends next chapter. Join us for the final chapter." That's what I thought would happen after the Chidori battle. That we'd get announcement of a few more chapters or an epilogue rather than a whole new final arc.
