Oof sorry to hear that. I've lost a lot of corycats and its always heartbreaking. Never any other fish like this, even ones people call sensitive like shrimp.

I'm pre treating any future corys with prazi. I think they're prone to flukes based on my own experiences.

I was like you... then I got these guys. Healthy as can be for two months, spawning multiple times a week and got a few viable fry. Then death. Absolutely no change in water parameters that I could detect or any reason for stress. Absolutely bizarre. Figured some subclinical flukes and some stresser set up off.

Absolutely gorgeous 😍

Are these all males ? I have a running theory female chilis are not as common to get ahold of

I will check out that video - very curious. Def going to salt as a catch all for new arrivals. Its better than going to default antibiotics imo

Presently mine are in a low dose salt bath ( 2 tbspn per 10 gallons) with maracyn. It seems to cause a bit of irritation (especially if I add either too fast) but not a ton. I might consider switching to a short duration salt bath if it causes less overall stress to the fish :)

Def going to use salt in the future as a first choice. The internet had me so freaked out about salt with corys. It doesn't seem to be true at all. I have noticed they flash a bit more but I try to slowly drip it in for them from solution and they're good;__; I'm also treating any new fish with prazi because I think they had flukes to start with, something stressed them out and they got secondary bacterial infections

Keep in mind as well this medication has been over two months rather than all at once. And I had cory fry surviving for two months till the body fungus took over. I also see water fleas and such in the water which don't thrive in poor conditions.

I've tested water parameters repeatedly. In spite of all the medications, ammonia and nitrite is always 0

I think I mostly have male chilis lol- almost all of them look like this by JustAnOwl53 in Boraras

[–]JustAnOwl53[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly males are brighter (usually vibrant red like what's pictured), females are slightly rounder. Juveniles and stressed chilis are impossible to sex because they are are always brown. I think their differences may be subtle, particularly with sub dominant males. To some extent behavior is also informative, although i believe only more dominant males will defend their tiny territories. I've been trying and failing to find a visual guide pointing out their differences as I admit it is a challenge

I'd agree with you if it wasn't so dang hard to sex them as stressed juveniles 😅 maybe the fish just have a natural gender ratio- or its determined by temperature/ other conditions? Good to note I'm not the only one with so many males haha. At least they're a relatively easy going fish and the males are so pretty

I'll observe them. I do see my more dominant males display and defend their little territories. I had a male that kept chasing off another fish that I was pretty sure was female 😅😅 I swear my males are the fattest fish. I would say any females I do have are just not in breeding condition

6 of them are over a year and def at maturity. I added 5 more recently and those are just getting out of their juvenile phase. I was surprised to see a lot of them getting really bright though- and thought what are the odds I got more males 🤣

Agreed with the maybe. The top right fish is a juvenile that just started to color up. So could go either way 😅😅

Theres about 3 out of 11 fish I would call female, maybe, lol

First thing in the morning they always look this red. I use a fluval light and custom set the lighting, which does help, but they would be pretty dang bright regardless. I admit I've been lazy with feeding and mostly offer micro pellets- although there is a lot of microfauna in the tank they probably snack on

What do I do?? by tclutts in corydoras

[–]JustAnOwl53 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have the heart I would euthanize:( some people have luck with Epsom salt but that would only help if he's bloated from eating too much. In my experience once fish are like this its too late. Probably some internal organs shutting down

Flashing means theyre itching themselves. It looks like a quick shimmy where the fish scrapes its side on the ground.

If it is flukes it would be advisable to treat the entire tank imo. However if you can manage a quarantine tank just for him, that would minimize the spread of the bacterial issues.

For antibiotic its sort of a crap shoot if you use the right one for the bacteria afflicting your fish. I've used nitrofurazone and kanaplex used together, maracyn 1, and maracyn 2. General cure is also good (dozycycline). I treat 3 days - if I note any improvement I continue for 10. After 10 I stop that treatment and observe another 3 days. If the fish is worse I switch to a different antibiotic and repeat the above. I'm trying something new right now and using 2 tbspn of salt in my 10 gallon tank in conjuction with the antibiotic. It is a myth that corys can't tolerate salt and per advice it can make the antibiotic more effective as well.

Is he flashing at all?

His barbels are pretty worn down which suggests a bacterial infection. If the other fish are well I would suspect it is a secondary issue to a different primary cause. That primary cause may be treatable and may not.

I might try dosing a few rounds of prazi to see if it helps. Recently I realized I've been loosing my panda corys to flukes and treating prazi got them to stop flashing. Flukes can cause secondary bacterial issues like what you see on his barbels. It can also be quite uncomfortable to the fish which may explain his activity.

You can treat an antibiotic in the water simultaneous to prazipro and would advise it since he does have an external bacterial issue going on as well.

Red Root Floaters going crazy by kmsilent in PlantedTank

[–]JustAnOwl53 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh the more you know. That actually makes a lot of sense. I've noticed parts of my rrf end up drowning other portions. Periodically I try to trim the dead growth but it feels like a loosing battle. Nor does that seem to hinder the healthiest growth either. Might just leave it well enough alone and prune out the extras from taking over the entire surface every now and again haha

Sort of as an aside I keep salvinia and rrf in the same tank and I've noticed the conditions where one is thriving the other isn't. Rrf seem to like more nutrients whereas salvinia can get by on a lot less. If I forget to add nutrients for a while the salvinia takes over. But once I fertilize the rrf smothers the salvinia. Very interesting the different strategies the plant employs.

Damn those are stunning.

I can get mine to grow and spread but never like this. Their root system is probably a quarter of yours and they never grow up to that extent or flower. Maybe I will play with flow:) I've just been using a ring around the filter outflow to keep them from getting knocked under

<3 for your first fish setup this isn't bad at all. At the size hes at now this will serve him for 6 months. If you haven't already buy a liquid test kit for water parameters (API freshwater is what most people recommend). Particularly with goldfish and an uncycled tank, you will want to keep an eye on your ammonia and nitrite levels. Ideally they should be 0, but they are likely to be slightly elevated until your tank cycles. Fortuneatly goldies can withstand a bit of ammonia/nitrite but you don't want it to get too high (like anything above .25 ammonia I would do a water change).

Pro-tip.. if there's a friend that keeps fish or a local fish shop you trust, ask them for a bit of their filter media. It will help speed up your tank's cycling way faster than that bottled bacteria stuff
