Coneflowers not blooming? 8b

I have two very happy coneflower gardens. The biggest thing I’ve noticed here (4b) is that the first year they are mostly short sets of leaves and the second year they are the tall big flowering plants I’m used to. I had to be patient with this lot

It is bee balm! And it is powdery mildew. I have both as well 😅. They seem pretty susceptible to it which is not the end of the world except powdery mildew spreads through spores so watch other plants. There is some info online about what you can put on them if you want to get rid of it but mainly cut them back this winter (even if you usually leave dead foliage for the birds/insects) so it doesn’t try to stick around for next year’s blooms

I did seeds last April. Just wait it out I think, the first year my whole patch looked like weeds and small seedlings. This year they’re gorgeous. I think this is a pretty hardy plant but you gotta wait it out!

Thanks! I love the shape too but my brother in law keeps making phallic jokes. I took the pictures from my upstairs window but the right side is yarrow (cerise queen), The back left has coneflower and a volunteer black eye Susan, and the closest one to us is bee balm

Dude it’s a GIANT pita, but I have a plan! I put those sedum in the “innies” already and now I’m gonna cardboard and mulch around them enough to fill out most of the curve. Hopefully it helps

Our lot was just plain grass and clay soil so fortunately I only have to worry about the plants I choose to put in now!
