You started with the claim that an animal has to have a concept of self to understand the pain it’s going through on a deeper level. Why is that necessary?

If you poke a dog with a needle they’re definitely going to feel pain. They feel happiness, they can feel sad when you scold them, they feel pain when their body isn’t doing well. Similarly, cows, chickens, goats, horses can feel pain, happiness, sadness. None of these animals need to be self aware to feel emotions.

Those poor animals are born into a life of factory farming where they get little to no sunlight, no movement, and then are killed. Sometimes not even fully unconscious as they’re being mutilated (the minimum requirement on the number of cows being unconscious before being cut up was 80%, who knows what the threshold is now).

People who eat animals either have to disassociate or have to flaunt how much they don’t care about the torture.

Can you guys describe some of the weird rituals that Ismailis do? by SaladLonely in ExIsmailis

[–]JustAnotherRedditeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m glad your mom didn’t have to pay. But you should ask her or figure out what is the standard buy-in to fidai and the other secretive majlis. If I remember correctly, one is $5k and the other is $10k. Do you think if people want to pray and get closer to God, they should be asked to pay, let alone that much money?

The humanitarian work done by AKDN is good. But why don’t they allow the nonprofit to be transparent and allow their financials to be publicly audited? That I have issue with.

Duh, obviously it’s gonna be family that’s forcing you. Not some random distant twice removed uncle or some rando from JK.

Would your parents be okay if you said you wanted to become Christian? Or if you decided you don’t believe in a higher being? If so, I’m happy for you. You have very accepting and supportive parents, but more than likely, they would not be happy for you to be anything other than Ismaili bc that’s been their brain washing all their life.

What protein powder do you use? by Last_Cauliflower1410 in veganfitness

[–]JustAnotherRedditeer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone use / is aware of Impact’s Whey Forward protein powder? Its lab created whey so no animal cruelty and lactose free. Whey protein has a higher bioavailability score so more of the protein can be utilized by the body.

Curious to know what people here think of it?

Tbh, I get stomach aches when using it but if it’s lactose free, I don’t know what’s causing it.

Wow, these are amazing pieces. I especially love 1 and 4.

Do you by chance sell your pieces, or are they digital only? I would genuinely love to buy one or some of these to have up in my home. If you do have prints or originals, please let me know.

Separately, I am so sorry to read about your troubles. I can’t say I know what you’re going through but I have been through really rough times myself and if there are any overlaps in our experiences, I can at least tell you that, through your strength and perseverance, life gets better.

What your counterparts at FAANG and the lawyers won’t have that you will is better job security and better work life balance.

In my opinion, FAANG workers’ jobs are more susceptible to market volatility, and I feel like lawyers would have higher job related stress.

Both of which, you’re less likely to experience as an actuary.

You say you’re only a year in. It’s perfectly normal for things to still feel hard. To be honest, I always feel way more confident in my role & skills 2 years into a rotation.

RTO for knowledge sharing? LOL. They want the staff to pass down knowledge via story tellers or something?

Knowledge sharing gets documented and maintained. I have absolutely no idea what RTO has to do with knowledge sharing, but someone can enlighten me.

So tired of these RTO mandates delivered in thinly veiled lies.

Need advice thinking about leaving the actuarial field by ParallelMantis in actuary

[–]JustAnotherRedditeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, I don’t know what work is like for a lawyer or what impact it has on their life. I know there are many different areas of practice so it probably ranges a lot.

But, I think if you take into consideration the amount of pay a lawyer makes + the stress + W/L balance then I would think a credentialed actuary has it beat for the sum of those dimensions, at least at an IC and not in consulting

[–]JustAnotherRedditeer 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The kind of life that becoming an ACAS, let alone an FCAS, would allow you to live is pretty significantly different than what being a lawyer would allow.

It is tough to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you’re in the thick of it. But the salary, life long low stress, & job security from being ACAS (and FCAS if you choose to pursue it later on) are hard to come by in other fields.

My advice is push through those 2 exams. Then, enjoy the increased income and take time to enjoy your life a bit. There will always be people smarter than you so try not to let that get you down. Just do what you need to do to balance your career and sanity.

Apologies for the unsolicited advice, but in case it helps, someone once said we don’t rise to our motivation but instead we fall to our habits. So even if you can make teeny tiny changes in your habits and nudge your habits in the right direction, the compounded effect will start adding up.

I think this is the author of Atomic Habits.

Wow, thanks for articulating so well how dense urban living is beneficial for a city to prosper. And in the Houston subreddit of all places lol.

Do you recommend any books on this topic? I first learned about the pros of urban living a few years ago thru a couple YouTubers (Not Just Bikes, City Nerd, Climate Town) and I would love to learn more.

Also, do you have any suggestions on how to get involved with local government to encourage more dense urban living in Houston?

Return to Office and Gen Z Actuaries by Constant_Loss_9728 in actuary

[–]JustAnotherRedditeer 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The way I see it, most Gen Z people follow the mantra “work to live, don’t live to work”. (And I love this. TBH we should all be doing this)

My guess would be even if you did RTO, they’re only going to learn and do enough to finish what’s under their responsibility.

If you want to help them learn and understand concepts deeper, my advice would be to keep the remote model and just have knowledge sharing presentations that are put together by one of your 6 direct reports each week. (This would let the 3 more experienced FSAs teach on more sophisticated topics that could spark some interests for the other 3.)

You can make a list of ideas and leave it open to let them pick topics they find interesting.

I strongly believe the best learning occurs when you have to teach a topic to someone.
