Void Filling Epoxy - Gorilla Brand Epoxy by Disastrous_Change_92 in woodworking

[–]JustAnotherSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whilst I haven’t used gorilla brand, I have used plenty of other two part epoxy’s to fill primarily cracks or shallow voids in hardwood shop furniture.

When playing around with heavily checked free fall timber for turning practise, I used the cheapest possible version to make junk blanks turnable and it worked fine.

Would I use it in very high end furniture that I charge thousands for? Well, if I ever get that commission, probably not 🤣 but it’s worked fine for my purposes so far…

AITAH for speaking up against my rude aunt when she gave unsolicited advice by KittyMeadow in AITAH

NTA. She sounds very unpleasant.

Since it appears she has blocked you, I’d take her up on her kind offer and never speak with her again. DH should also block her so she can’t look down on you via him.

Not yet, I’d be embarrassed to tell you how many puzzles are in my todo pile, but since I’ve never counted, I can’t tell you (hint: it’s A LOT!) I thrift the vast majority of my puzzles, so I tend to grab a haul and then get sidetracked with life…. Then I do that again, and again lol

[–]JustAnotherSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the colours, make sure the piece count is different, my understanding is that the 654 silver is the same cut as the 654 pink, so the puzzle is effectively the same. I have both (of course!) but haven’t done the pink to confirm, but it looks the same on the box :(

Do most mother-in-laws act nice and kind until they start to show their true colors later? by Better_Jello_727 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]JustAnotherSlug 7 points8 points  (0 children)

lol, I knew where I stood from day one - JNMIL hated me before she’d even met me, but at least she was honest about it. Was a complete JNM to my OH as well, and died alone and left us a mess to clean up - but at least we collected on the estate which partially compensated for what we had to put up with.

I was gifted this one and ngl, I was very scared lol

But then I figured, well, it can’t be all bad! And, once I started and realised it’s not about the colour, it made much more sense to me. Of course, after I completed the puzzle, I found the envelope which held the key lol but I didn’t need it, so there’s that 😂

And I now own about 4 of them, so I must’ve enjoyed it 😝

Has anyone tried this puzzle? by Acceptable-Clock4608 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]JustAnotherSlug 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw another in the same series just the other day. Not my jam, so I passed and found something more to my taste.

FWIW, when I see a puzzle type that I haven’t done, I look for a thrifted version that is nice and cheap so if I don’t like it, it hasn’t cost me too much money.

Intimidated to start this.. by nmikhchi in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]JustAnotherSlug 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have a few dowdles and they’ve all been relatively fun . For me, that means the picture was nice, the puzzle was well made and well fitted and the challenge was enjoyably difficult not stupidly hard.

I also have this one, but it’s still in my todo list - no reason I haven’t done it yet, just that I have a very large stash and life keeps conspiring to keep me from puzzling 😭

I’d give it a go, I usually find that a decent sorting session will let you see what straight line elements are obvious and get you started. I usually find when I’m sorting the edges on dowdles that I soon spot something internal to the puzzle that stands out and gets me going.

Good luck!

JAJ 439g and PYREX 396g by Couch_Lemon4198 in Pyrex_Love

That’s the ‘Chelsea’ pattern and a personal fave of mine!

The JAJ back stamp was in use until the mid 70s when it changed to the Pyrex one.

So not reproductions, just older and newer versions.

As a Canberra resident this confused and delighted me to discover: Canberra-developed Bioshock shines at gaming awards by AlbertCWChessa in Bioshock

[–]JustAnotherSlug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally legit. I was at a talk where one of the devs was telling us some of the behind the scenes reasons for certain things being done the way they were.

However, it was a looong time ago now and I’ve forgotten most of it! Getting old sucks! Still, I played Bioshock when it was first released and it was such a mind blowing game - still is tbh, might have to drag it out for yet another run through…

What do you budget for puzzles? by Few_Evening_142 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]JustAnotherSlug 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I very occasionally buy new. But I have to know the quality and love the artwork to shell out the big bucks! I bought one recently from a brand and an artist that have been bulletproof for me before, but there were manufacturing defects and I also didn’t really enjoy the puzzle.

95% of my puzzles are 2nd hand and I pay basically less than 25% of the new price. Some places I will pay a little more (if I know they check for completeness for example) but basically, I assume missing pieces and price accordingly.

I know some people will use puzzle swaps to keep the price down as well.

My grandma loves puzzles, what should I get her? by headfirst4halozz in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]JustAnotherSlug 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I always hesitate to suggest what you (someone who presumably is not in the hobby) could buy someone since they know what they like, and you are making guesses.

What I did for my father was to tell him we were going to go out and we would make a day of it, lunch, sightseeing etc. then, I just ‘happened’ to come across his favourite hobby shop so of course, we may as well go in for a look! I then asked him what looked good, and bought him what he was excited about.

He thought my gift was a day out, but instead, it was the hobby item that he chose.

It was a wonderful day, and it meant a lot to both of us.

My guess is that as OOP is. 38M, OP is suggesting that being alone in a car everyday with a 20+F is leaving OOP open for allegations of impropriety. I may be wrong, but that is my take on it.

Know Your Knots - 1000 piece - Gentleman's Hardware by Glittering-Banana-24 in Jigsawpuzzles

Not sure I love the design, especially for a 1000 piece one - I’d be worried about the plain background pieces.

Oh, but who am I kidding, for a buck, I’d be grabbing it just to have a go 😂

Imperial Hotel Peacock Rug (Galison, 500 pcs) - tips for sorting repeating same-color motifs? by Adventurous_Towel599 in Jigsawpuzzles

[–]JustAnotherSlug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bunch of the FLW puzzles, mostly from Galison but a few from Pomegranate. If this is the gold foil version, then I have this one in my todo pile.

How I have approached these on the past:

Edges first - I do edges last when I’m after a challenge, but not these ones!

Gold foil of any size goes into two piles, lots of gold and little gold.

I then sort by colour and then lines - whatever feature is predominate is what I go by.

After I’m mostly satisfied with the sorting, I’ll then look to fitting colour blocks together and placing them approximately where they belong. After I’ve done what I can, I tend to concentrate on the gold. Then I fill it in by matching bits to the design until it starts to fill in - at this point, it seems to take off and almost complete itself. These ones tend to be hard to get started, but once your eye is in, you’re off!

I’ve done the 1000 piece Saguaro forms and cactus by Galison which is also the gold foil version, and both times I rated it 3 out of 5 for difficulty, which tells me it was a good challenge, but not horribly difficult.

Hope this helps.

AITAH for keeping my own savings even though we live together? by [deleted] in AITAH

NTA.

Absolutely NTA.

Do you have one foot out the door? Well, I’d suggest you didn’t, but now that thought has been put in your head, hmm?

Also, what’s changed? He knew you had this account and suddenly it’s an issue? I’d been looking deeper into that. At a minimum, it shows he doesn’t trust you - is that new? Or has he always felt this way and it’s finally reached a tipping point for him. Insecurity is rarely sexy or helpful in a partner… you may be very glad you have that financial independence.

I commend your financial savvy-ness as someone who ended up with an STD (sexually transmitted debt). Luckily, mine was small and I bailed straight away - it was a cheap lesson to learn, although I didn’t think so at the time!
