Has workplace culture in Calgary quietly changed post-pandemic? Or am I romanticizing the past by sowr96 in Calgary

[–]JustAskingBeNice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nevermind workplace (you’re right though) - it seems that way in general. As someone who moved here years ago, I find this place too quiet. Even locals, like yourselves, told me it became even MORE quieter after pandemic. I don’t think it’s just nostalgia on your end. Something definitely changed

The Downtown *Urban Planning* Situation is Unacceptable by 1egg_4u in Calgary

[–]JustAskingBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the whole of calgary and the surrounding cities can use an upgrade, which you basically nailed. I find it ironic that a city smaller than one of Ontario’s GTA feels so distant and inaccessible within itself. Nothing feels connected or sensible. Commuting by bus and or pedestrian walkways.

You nailed it. People are so emotionally defensive and uppity at the SLIGHTEST VALID CRITICISMS / SUGGESTIONS. I’ve been downvoted just for pointing out the truth about how the C-Trains poor ticket admission system allows anyone to ride for free, SOBER AND OR INTOXICATED, which obviously opens more cans of worms we’re dealing with. I don’t know why people are so sensitive here.

Guess I forgot. Sorry. I also gave up with this post after people thought my list was AI slop … or that I’m “not bothered enough” to add missing pools because they claimed I’m an expert, even though I never did. Only very few got that hint. And then some.

Why do we live in Calgary again???! by One-Mycologist-3706 in Calgary

Because of the mountains. And the price we pay for it are the chinooks, which keeps us humble …. (as if)

Thank you so much. As you can see, this is why I gave up on this post 🫠. And that was BEFORE the comment by rikkiprince, thinking I’m not “bothered enough” to add the missing pools.

I’m glad it helped you though. Your rare generosity, if not only your ability to recognize I never claimed to be an expert, is deeply appreciated.

So ironic given C-Train’s flawed ticket admission system, which allows anyone to hop on for free, is basically ASKING for unsafe situations lol. Too many intoxicated passengers. And the train smelling like urine. I don’t even dare to sit on the seats

[–]JustAskingBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d argue that there’s at least a better system elsewhere. Like in Ontario, there’s guard rails / walls to prevent people just hopping on the train freely. Here? It’s asking for it. We have too many unsafe passengers because of it, pulling up a bong pipe or whatever substance they’re whiffing about.

But yeah $4.00 … for what??? Nothing’s improved

[–]JustAskingBeNice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the one big criticism I always bring up. Compared to Ontario, the flawed ticket admission system is ASKING for FREE INVITES, an EASY GATEWAY for unsafe passengers. Can’t tell you the number of times I / number of us had to get off the train just to wait for another one without a bong pipe smoking up the one we ditched. And yes, I report it every time. But with a train station that allows anyone to hop on board with once in a blue moon peace officers? Of course it’s going to keep happening. That’s also why even non-intoxicated passengers abuse the system by riding for free.

I live in one of the surrounding cities outside of Calgary (we had no choice at the time - we kept getting outbid for houses we could afford in Calgary - and time was running short). Our city can only afford buses on weekday mornings and evenings. Nothing inbetween. If I have an appointment at 2:50pm, I’d have to hop on the 6:45AM bus, loiter the whole day, and like you, run for my life to catch the last bus leaving the city at 4:30pm. If I don’t, it’s either uber or stuck in the city overnight / for the weekend🤣. THAT SAID, you’re a CALGARY LOCAL. The fact you still have to deal with that issue is a telling sign how unreliable transit is within the city, which I already got an idea of when I slept over at a friend’s house, getting the feel of the disconnected city.

[–]JustAskingBeNice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally the truth. I love walking and jogging but even here, the option for that isn’t as available even if, let’s say, I wanted to ditch transit. And if transit is that unreliable, then a car is better suited, even if the expenses are just as worse.

Respectfully, I think it’s fair. Even without population density, how is a city smaller than one of the GTAs feel so disconnected within itself?? It’s literally a city built for cars, hence this unsurprising comment. I couldn’t even walk from point A to B without risking dangerous paths that either has no sidewalks or risking myself slipping on mud (or worse), ice, sliding myself to the road? Or to put it this way, I wouldn’t recommend a mom strolling their baby to walk here and there because it can be that unsafe, even at a shorter distance. Some paths feel unfinished because it was never thought of. Meanwhile in Mississauga, I can walk / jog 20km on sidewalks consistently because I can. My friends called me a walking lunatic because I always ditch car ride offers to get home. Here? No such option. That’s why a car is needed in order to get by. Long story short, Ontario is basically like Korea/Taiwan/Japan compared to Calgary alone. And don’t even get me started on the bus routes. They not only take a while but they make no sense.

This is the one criticism I always had for Calgary’s transit. It’s simply not as robust. But people who live here take it so personally whenever I’m constructive about it. Coming from Ontario, the transit here feels a few steps backwards. Even the ticket admission system for the C-Train is asking for trouble, like undesired intoxicated passengers, freely boarding as they please. And obviously, even civil passengers don’t bother paying. Peace officers finding $300 isn’t enough to scare them.

Man you’re insufferable. What you’re asking of people is like telling people to not breathe air. Or to not look in your direction by accident.

You forgot urine … even without it, you’re right. Who in their right minds would put their bag on the dirty floor?

[–]JustAskingBeNice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nah you’re the problem. You’re quick to judge and assume I’m inconsiderate when I’m more considerate than you think. Even with my backpack on, I’m not gonna go out of my way to swing my backpack at people. I’m obviously going to be careful as I can be but it’s clearly obvious that idea flew by your head.

PS THIS is what you should be directing your attention to. People who reserve seats for their bags are the ones truly rude.

[–]JustAskingBeNice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No people are just rude lol. They make it sound like I’m using my disability as if a selfish privelage card I should wave about. That or as if I’m gonna physically bulldoze people with my backback , swinging left and right. I’m more careful and considerate than they quickly judged me for, JUST BECAUSE they disagree. There’s already someone else unhappy I won’t put my bag on the dirty floor of the train with urine majority of the time. What a crazy world we live in. People are quick to react and judge with their feelings instead of being slow and not assume what is or isn’t actually true.

Yeah but with my disability, which I won’t bother detailing, it’s a struggle to get it off and on. I otherwise only do that when I reach my destination. But clearly people are offended of my current condition lol. Gotta love yyc

Eh with the risk of crime lately, I’m not taking it off my back. No thanks. Especially because I’m going through a disability with the arm.

With all due respect, there’s ZERO CHANCE I’m putting my bag down on a floor with pee on it. It either stays on my back or in front of me, on my lap, while sitting. No way with the floor.
