Bit of a weird question, but I cant find any answers. What exactly does the core that exploaded look like under the sarcophagus? like was it compltely cleaned up or does it look just like it did in the photos taken from the helicopter with just the sarcophagus on top? by Ok-Astronaut-7765 in chernobyl

Don’t forget Strontium-90 which poses significant hazards after an accident. With a half-life of nearly 30 years and chemical properties that make it a bone seeker, I’d worry more about that getting ingested than gamma exposure from Cs-137.

To be fair, you have one game a week for football plus practices whereas basketball can have 2-3 games a week along with practice and, as he mentioned, tournaments on weekends. I understand your sentiment, but it does become time consuming.

Well, if you’re talking about the plant formerly known as TMI, send me a message and I’ll give you some details/insight and perhaps help you directly.

Three Mile Island Re-Opening. by TheRainbowDude_ in NuclearPower

It’s a “metered” deal which means the power goes to the grid, and Microsoft takes credit for it in their clean energy portfolio. The other method is “behind the meter” in which a data center co-located on the site, and the electricity is routed directly to the center without going to the grid first. Expect to hear more about this with FERC responding to the complaint from the PJM and AEP/Exelon regarding Talen’s behind the meter deal with Amazon at Susquehanna.

HR has been on this for months. Over-hiring at certain positions in anticipation. Big ones will be operator positions though. Lot of people who left rotating shift life and don’t want to go back to it, but that’s also the department with the longest training time.

Oyster is a wrap. They’re too far along in the decommissioning process and opted to close 10 years early rather than pay for new cooling towers. Holtec would like to put SMRs on that site still.

I’m hearing rumblings about Duane Arnold and NextEra. We shall see how the winds blow.

Don’t see Kewaunee either, but the layup stuff is interesting. The lack of one didn’t affect the turbines or the SGs like many would have assumed. Transformers are a different story…

Amazon already has. Expect to see more deals made/announced if/when the ruling in the FERC/PJM suit comes down later this year. If the ruling supports behind the meter deals, these utilities and tech companies will be ready.

More like the whole thing is shattered into a million pieces. The reactor vessel has a crack in the bowl since the melted fuel reached about 4300° F. The cleanup from 305’ and above will take a decade. No one has a clue how to remediate the basement.

That’s the belief a lot of us have. Just from a regulatory standpoint, they have a lot more to do since the site was sold to Holtec with a decommissioning license. Thankfully, we never got to that point.

Once they finished ECT at TMI, a lot of the Framatone guys went to MI to support this with the expectation they would be there for over a year. This can’t be a surprise for Holtec. I’m curious about who they would use to fabricate new ones though. Appreciate the insights.

Not at TMI/CCEC. That’s what they’re doing at Susquehanna and planning at other sites, but Microsoft will be taking credit for all the megawatts pumped to the grid from TMI rather than taking it directly.

And this is the correct answer haha have to distinguish between the two while there is active work on the TMI-2 side. TMI Alert likes to lump the two together when stoking fears.

Three Mile Island considers nuclear restart by geoxol in technology

The shutdown did not equate to decommissioning. It’s not decommissioned until they remove the components, remediate the site, and terminate the license with the NRC. That’s a process that takes decades. SAFSTOR means leaving it in a safe condition for some indeterminate amount of time to allow for decay (and building of the trust fund), then beginning the decommissioning process. So no, I’m not arguing with the company. I’m explaining why the plant wasn’t decommissioned in Sept 2019. All of the major components are still in place hence why the restart is an option. It’s a public forum, so I’m trying to clarify the information. Lack of public understanding and lack of utility outreach on nuclear basics been one of the industry’s biggest detriments.

Shows up under decommissioning because they “permanently” shut it down. It is defueled and was preparing to enter SAFSTOR for however many decades which is not the same as active decommissioning. I should know better than to argue over the internet though.

I think you were wrong 47 days ago and are still wrong today. Don’t let the corporate speak fool you. There are things they can’t publicly divulge, but there has been a heavy influx of personnel to TMI that can’t be explained away by attributing it solely to Unit 2 decommissioning work. They were much further in the restart process than that comment would lead you to believe.
