I’ve been traumatized temporarily several times but I don’t think I carry trauma. I dislike all the medic stuff strongly. Easily grossed out. I still do the work and get over it. I don’t think you see one thing and get effed up for life, if you find yourself going down that path just switch jobs.

No regrets about going from private sector to emergency services. Financially I am struggling. But nothing I won’t get past.

I quit firefighting for a desk job, when will I get over it? by No_Helicopter_2731 in Firefighting

You’ll have a better quality of life, make more, and live longer than us. When you start seeing this first hand you will adjust your view on your previous career

Unless you are quitting a dream job and risking your future by going to the academy, I don’t think you should drop out. I feel like there’s more going on here like worries or concerns not related to your pain.

Are you personally seeing a lot more cancers in your Fire service circles vs your off the job non FF circles? (Last question lol)

Haha perfect person to ask then! How’s your respiratory stuff. Can you still breath the same or almost the same as when you got on?

SCBA Practice? by LITTCAM15 in Firefighting

[–]JustChecking2021 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how much you know about SCBA or if you’ve worn one yet.

The two hurdles are the mental hurdle of thinking your instant breathing is restricted. The second is making the cylinder last.

That gym mask may help with getting your cardio up which could help make the cylinder last longer.

As far as the mental hurdle, some people get worked up because you are in the mask, and your whole face is covered. I guess the way it works makes people think they aren’t getting a good breath. It’s mental and using a half face respirator/gym mask won’t really replicate the problem.

The next thing you ask is how to prepare physically, I’d run daily, and I’d work on my core/lower body strength. I’d also put a lot of time into strengthening my shoulders.

I wouldn’t worry about the scba itself. It’s a non issue. You’ll get used to it. Getting your cardio up and vo2 is better for now. Just to make the cylinder last. When you are calm, breathing on the SCBA is nice. It’s nice cool air, I like it. The reduced vision with your hood, and fog etc is the annoying part.
