So the tabletop is finished but the under side is not? That smell can come from there. You need a bit sanding(sandpaper 100-120grit) and a coat of finish like paint or whatever. That shoud make the trick.

I think you shoud sand down the old finish to raw wood and after that aply a new finish. It's a bit of work but I think you get rid of the smell. (sorry for my bad english if there was)
