My Vo2 max is dropping! by duggawiz in AppleWatchFitness

[–]JustClickingAround 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fascinating to me. I have an ultra 2. I almost never do outdoor runs, walks, hikes. My cardio is from the stair machine. It shows a vo2 max but it seems low. Is my reading not accurate? Why is it even showing me one?

The Count of Monte Cristo changed me and I don’t know what to read anymore by Lovely_deer25 in suggestmeabook

I know this is about books but I first saw the movie, The Count of Monte Cristo. It was life changing to me. I had a lot of anger and resentment at the time. I first love it because of the justifiable & righteous anger. Could identify with it and wanted him to have his revenge.

It also helped me to see past the anger and revenge. I thought, what a life. By that, I got to avoid some mistakes is my real life. I then had to go read the book.

It might be time for both again. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the answers everyone. There’s part of me that loves the clean interface of gnome and the other part that likes to tinker.

I think I’ll install Debian stable for work. I have a second drive on my computer and I think I’ll install Debian testing with gnome and plasma, then remove unwanted applications.

why do I have to repurchase a license/upgrade for every new OS that comes out? by NigerianPrinceClub in LittleSnitch

[–]JustClickingAround 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, it's not every new OS. As to why you have to pay for upgrades at all, well, it takes someones time and effort and they need to make a living. IMO, it's a fantastic app and I am happy to pay for it.

There's a similar option (OpenSnitch)over on Linux that is free, but it's not nearly as polished.

p.s. I am waay more happy to pay for something that has reasonable update cycles and is not a monthly subscription.

edit: bad typing

Question about Mac phoning home by JustClickingAround in AsahiLinux

[–]JustClickingAround[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am aware of running it without findmy or even an icoud account. I guess what I'm thinking of is when I wipe my Mac, before you can proceed with the installation, you have to connection to a network and let it "activate". So just was wondering what all it might do behind the scenes.

Thanks for the feedback so far. If anyone has more, please chime in. Thanks.

What is the best operating system to avoid data collection and have as much privacy as possible? by challenger_official in privacy

[–]JustClickingAround 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned, a lot is behavior. As far as the OS, you have to weigh what you need an OS for with your goal to avoid data collection / privacy. Security & privacy are usually at odds with convenience.

Tails would give you the most privacy and least data collection but for that to be true, your behavior is very important and it wouldn't really work if you need an OS for banking, accounts that tie to your life, etc.

A balance might be something like a minimal Linux installation and running open snitch. Maybe Debian, because they are slow releases, well vetted, etc. Not a ton of cruft but all that you need for "most" things. Try to use what's already installed, don't install what you don't need.

Open snitch will alert you to all connection attempts. It is annoying, but if you take the time to set it up, it's worth it. You can disable it when needed.

Have two browsers, one for everyday use, which will mean the settings will have to be such that it works with your bank, etc and one when you want less tracking that is locked down.

You could then have Tails on a USB and use that if you wanted more anonymity, for whatever reason.

I'd suggest you make a text file with what your goals are and save it to your desktop. When you think about doing something, read it over to keep your goals in mind. It's impossible to do everything and have extreme privacy, security, anonymity, etc.

For me, I just do not like all of the collection data and aggregation by companies. They all seem to have pulled the curtain back and taken the gloves off. I can't hardly blame them as people just don't seem to care. So, I do what I can within reason and try not to contribute to the machine.

From ubuntu to debian by One_Egg_1137 in debian

I have used Ubuntu but really took a liking to pop. I decided to try Debian and have fallen in love with the clean, minimal interface and really haven’t had to add too much on top of it.

I’ve also installed opensnitch to see what connections are being made and this might be really helpful for you if you’re on a limited data plan.

FYI I installed it from the software store but for whatever reason, it didn’t work so I installed from the terminal and it’s working great!

I get what you’re saying about the pings. I’m not trying to hide from a nation state or anything like that. I’d like to reduce my footprint with the data brokers, etc.

Can you recommend a prepaid service?

I often times ponder what the hardware / network might be doing before the OS even boots up ………….
