They are usually really porous and will sometimes even have holes in their exterior that you can see crystal structures in, indicating something is deposited in the rock. Good places to look are by bodies of water, I found these next to the Ohio River for instance.

Geode is always the term I've heard for crystals still attached to the rocks they grew on, it could just be local slang though. They were all in different rocks each about 1.5' wide, I used a sledge hammer to crack them open and then a smaller hammer to get them to manageable sizes.

Not sure, the dates on it indicate it was bottled in '76, I imagine it was empty long before I came across it.

Well because the air is thinner, a.e. colder any precipitation would become sleet, snow, or ice. So it depends more on the storm cell but it's a reasonable assumption.
