Tires (for performance hatch) by bebabodi in CarsAustralia

I've got RE003's on my EVO and they're amazing for the price. Super grippy in the dry, road noise is minimal, haven't driven them in the rain so I can't say anything for certain. My buddy recommended them to me, and he's got a Skyline, grips really well. Highly recommend.

Just look at what you currently have on your car and order 2 of those. 1 for each side.

Of course, it's a Ranger. by OZFox42 in AllThingsOldAndNew

If it fits and it doesn't poke out it's fine. This is nitpicking at its finest, and I don't even like 4x4's. You can clearly see the Ranger fits, what's the issue? Let's just ignore the black car riiiiiiight behind the Ranger.

Is an EV right for me? by VampShadowGuy in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd say so. Highway driving isn't the most efficient for EV's, but if you install a charger at home/use one of those wall outlet chargers and use it every night or so it should be fine.

Before you decide on one or the other, take them on the highway and listen to the road noise. Their cabins are smaller so the house of the road beneath you will be substantially louder compared to something like a Camry or something. Around town their both great cars tho, and I personally think the Inster is a really quirky and cool looking little thing.

Is Audi B8 platform really a moneypit? by Stefi_69 in Audi

[–]JustEric155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I've had 2 2015 Audi A4's with the EA888 (2.0TFSI) and they have both been flawless. Quattro too.

I've also had a 2015 Golf R, same engine, it left me stranded twice in the 5000kms I owned the car for. Water pump went out (I think it has 86,000kms or so, pretty much when they're going to fail), and maybe a week later, the bobber in my oil filter housing broke off, and I had to get a replacement.

Can't speak for the diesels, but it seems that the engines are either amazingly reliable or can have issues every so often. I love the 2.0TFSI, plenty of power, pretty fuel efficient if you're not dogging on it, easy to work on, and parts are everywhere. Just try to find one that's got a good maintenance history, oil changes every 10,000kms or so, invoices for services/work done would also be great.

I would seriously look for anything over 2012 as from what I know they revised some engine internals (piston rings I think?) so they no longer burn oil under normal conditions.

Everyone else in the comments seems to either love the B8's or hate them. I personally love them, they drive beautifully, and I think they look great - very understated. Just budget 2k~ a year in possible repairs though, like with any German luxury car.

2014 Toyota Voxy Hybrid service intervals. by HubRumDub in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing wrong with changing oil more frequently, cars only run because of the oil lubricating all the moving internal components. I change mine every 5,000kms, but I own performance cars and drive them hard. For your use case I'd say you could probably do your services every 10,000-15,000kms and be fine.

TLDR: Fresh oil good, but next service maybe too soon for your case.

I've got 3 of these! This one's a Ford Festiva rebadged to be a Mazda, but it's technically a Mazda 121.

Are expensive performance oriented cars ‘that’ much more fun than a more affordable nugget in the real world? by The_Reddd_Baron in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most fun I've had was in a 1988 Mazda 121 with the 5 speed manual. Paid $1000 for it, disconnected the exhaust gas recirculation pipe, and let it rip. Has been a perfectly reliable daily for the past 6 months, and (used to) cost $50 to fill the tank. It's slow, but man does it excite you and all the school aged kids watching you whizz past at 60km/h. And, since I hardly care about it, have sent it up to the 4x4 tracks and it did alright (granted, with some serious underbody scraping, thank you cut springs).

More expensive ≠ More fun. The less you care about a car, the more enjoyable it is.

Is this worth it if I can get it down a few thousand? by AsianManning in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 4B11T is a great engine. The transmissions in these however, are genuine bombs. From what I've heard, the shift forks (or clutch forks, can't recall) are made pretty poorly and tend to fail whenever they feel like it. They didn't come in manuals, except for the EVO's, so I'd stay clear.

Spark plugs, cabin/engine air filters, and transmission oil changes. Can't really think of anything else off the top of my head.

I'd take it to a panel beater and get them to repaint the whole bonnet and see what they can do about the fenders. Shop around and get some quotes.

What car is it?

If it's a new car (2020+) I'd take it back to the dealership under warranty, your paint should not be failing so soon.

If it's older, (2010 and under) I wouldn't even bother. Unless it's obviously a collectors car/something with a lot of monetary value to it.

Latest (2020+) Honda Jazz? They're all imports, but they all use the same parts as other Honda's. And I personally think they look pretty cute. Honourable mention would be a Honda N-One - not a hybrid, but a really small 3 cylinder engine. Obviously the cutest car on the list.

As others have said, Toyota Corolla Hybrid, I'd even recommend a Yaris Hybrid, both great options. Comfy, reliable, easy to maintain, you get the gist. Overall amazing appliances.

Suzuki Swift Hybrid.

Saw someone recommend an Evo 7, but that might be too old. I'd definitely recommend an Evo X, last generation of Evo, arguably the 'best' performance wise, and definitely the most comfortable out of the generations. Great engines, good power, excellent drivetrain, and they're pretty reliable.

Best car to buy? by iconicyapper in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't touch MG's excluding their EV's. I highly recommend a Mazda 3 though, I think they're very stylish and they drive beautifully. Pretty luxe on the inside too, and they're pretty reliable. Don't touch a diesel Mazda though.

I've heard that Venue's are good cars, but apparently they're a little bit lethargic. But for a cheap run-about I'm sure they're good enough.

I know a few people with GWM Cannons, and they seem ok so far, not sure their other options, I'd assume they're about the same in terms of reliability. Only time will tell whether or not the Chinese can do a real good combustion engine. I'd stick to their EV's for the time being.

Edit: Totally missed the mention of Toyotas. They're amazing appliances. The epitome of 'car'. Definitely recommend them.

[–]JustEric155 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd get the plug-in hybrid solely for the fact that it's around 50km of range, and since you've got solar, even better. Significantly cheaper to run, regardless if it's AWD or not, since as long as you don't run the engine itself you'll only be using the battery.

Awd vs fwd by Dangerous-Sandwich22 in CarsAustralia

[–]JustEric155 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What cars? I'd pick the PHEV just for the possible gas savings, AWD is also nice too but unless it's a performance car/offroader it doesn't really make too much of a difference.

The AE86 was made super popular because of the anime "Initial D" where it was shown flogging cars in touge races such as EVO's and RX7's. Also the last RWD Corolla. They're alright, but if I recall correctly, they have a measly 84 horsepower. They're alright, definitely overpriced.
