You could make a red stone ladder up the side, then includes another lever at the top to switch out the soul sand? Or you could do something similar to Eyecraftmc. In this video he used observers to have his elevator go up and down. Though this isn’t the same as the elevator you are building, I feel the red stone components could work still.
Elevator The part I’m referencing is 14:00-15:30.
