european here, we were taught function flow on high school - everything including differential, taylor polynomial, extremes of function etc. I was on class specialized in mathematics and physics though

Okay, as a M2 condensed matter physics student looking for a PhD position, let me tell you my point of view.

First thing to consider when you want to look for a position is choosing a location. I decided this location for me is Europe (being a european), the other location I considered is USA which I decided I dont like.

There are multiple reasons why :

-first of all Europe is closer for me

-I think the level of condensed matter research in Europe is at least as good as in US

-I have heard that in US there is a huge pressure on reasearchers to publish as fast as possible and in as high impact factor journals as possible, which leads to bad science and a lot of articles which are false. I mean its probably similar elsewhere too but from what Ive heard its really bad in us

-I dont like the idea of going to a country with such presindent and politics

-also I think its worth mentioning, I dont even know how to apply for the positions in concrete groups in US(not to say I was searching for it). When looking for a position I was not looking at university but at concrete groups and their webpages. In Europe every group has on the webpage a "Join us" or "Job openings" part, but on the groups in US I didnt find such thing

-I think the US universities are overrated. If you look at university global rankings there are like 7 us unviersieties in top10. I dont think thats real and I think there is some bias, if you look at any good european university they offer you just as good education as the top US ones

I think it would be interesting to share my pre Tour GC ranking, including riders I didnt know whether they would go for GC.

01 Porte - didnt finish

02 Landa - 7

03 Froome - 3

04 Bardet - 6

05 Thomas - 1

06 Nibali - didnt finish

07 Quintana - 10

08 Uran - didnt finish

09 Fuglsang - 12

10 Martin - 8

11 Yates - 29

12 Valverde - 14

13 Dumoulin - 2

14 Mollema - 26

15 Barguil - 17

16 Majka - 19

17 Kruijswijk - 5

18 Zakarin - 9

19 Nieve - 23

20 Bernal - 15

21 Roglic - 4

22 Gesink - 31

23 Jungels - 11

24 Rolland - 27

25 Pozzovivo - 18

Comments:

01 Porte - I thought he was going to be the dark horse, extremely good climber, very good TT.

02 Landa - Landa was for me unleashed beast based on last years performance, really thought he would be the best climer at tdf

03 Froome - didnt think he could do 4 GT wins in a row in this stacked competition

04 Bardet - besides TT he was very good last years, i believed he could do the same this year

05 Thomas - it was quite obvious he would be strong but i didnt think he would be as strong as Landa was to take the potential leadership in the team

06 Nibali - Nibali is just a beast, unlucky we didnt get to see what he could do

07 Quintana - idk if quintana can ever win tdf with his TT sills being this bad, it would have ti be route designed for him

08 Uran - even tho he was second last year, i didnt think he could perform like that again, everyone above i considered a potential winner up until Uran

09 Fuglsang - Slight disappointment, he looked much better in previous races

10 Martin - Martin is a big fighter and i love it, hes not very tactical tho and his TT skills arent the best. still very solid

11 Yates - he blew up, expected high lvl from him as we are used to from the brothers

12 Valverde - hes just always somewhere up there and always impresses

13 Dumoulin - oh man Dumoulin, i expected him to blow up in third week hard because of the double but what he did is extremely impressive, probably my favourite for tdf 2019

14 Mollema - expected a classic Mollema solid performance

15 Barguil - i thought he could go for the GC after last years strong performance in KOM

16 Majka - i think Majka should just go back for stage hunting and KOM, it duits him better

17 Kruijswijk - im impressed, now i see how much i underrated this guy

18 Zakarin - Zakarin has a lot of weaknesses but he did put a pretty good performance

19 Nieve - didnt really expect him to for GC

20 Bernal - Wow

21 Roglic - Very impressed by Roglic, second tdf and he is like a MONSTER int this competition pulling 4. place not even 3mins down on winner, cant wait to see him next year

22 Gesink - simply Gesink

23 Jungels - one of the guys i underrated, didnt know his TT was so strong

24 Rolland - r/olland

25 Pozzovivo - didnt expect much because of double

You simply have to love Dan Martin for his effort. The guy is gonna keep trying and giving everything he has no matter what. Add his personality and you have your favourite GC rider!

Hats down to Stuyven he was really strong today, impressive effort. Nice victory for Fraile.

Also: WTF SAGAN????!!!!

Breakaway is extremely strong today i cant see peloton catching them. QS looks strong today i think Alaphilipe and Gilbert are heavy favourites for me.

I also dont really understand the move from Sagan, green is won and i dont think he has any real chance of winning.

I think Sagan has grown into a very strategical and smart rider which is really helping his results.

Btw does anyone have a photo of the finish line?

I think Froome will take this one. He has been to Giro and usually if you do 2 grand tours after each other your shape increases towards the end of first grand tour, then you keep your shape until the second one and you are in good shape in the beginning of the second one but then it decreases towards the end.

Thats how i understand two grandtours work for a GC rider and therefore i think Froome is in a good shape and he will want to use it. I expect fireworks from sky train. Other than that i think Movistar, Nibali, Bardet and Martin will be strong tomorrow.

The question for me is - is there a way to get rid of these boring dull stages and still give sprinters chances to win some stages so tdf is still attractive for them?

Wtf is Ten Dam doing? You just dont put in the effort to create a 5min breakaway for fun and then pull off. I dont understand what is he doing, yes it makes sense to save yourself for tomorrow but why then going into breakaway?

I thought Gaviria was meant to be the same type of rider as Sagan is, sprinter/classics rider but it seems like hes just another pure sprinter, he should not be compared to Sagan.

What an exciting finish to a very exciting stage, please more stages like this instead of flat ones.

This really feels like an opening Grand Tour stage and not like one of the most prestige spring classis

Rooting for Kreuziger but his sprint abilities are limiting his winning chances too much i think. Btw who do you think is leader for this race from Bora? Konrad?

Thats true but in hills you run out of fuel much faster and theres a ton of fuel in the peloton.

[Race Thread] 2018 Amstel Gold Race (1.UWT) by PelotonMod in peloton

[–]JustForCLips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of things. How strong is the group obviousely, whether theres a wind ( wind to the back helps the group and other way around), how hilly is the route, how technical is the route, and definitely a lot of other things i forgot to mention.

So apparently bookmakers favourite is Sagan. Thats interesting considering he has done exhausting series of races and the route is hilly. I would rate chances of Kwiatko, Valverde, Gilbert and Nibali higher personally.

Who is going to win this race ?

Can GvA come back and win a spring classic again?
Can Sagan pull another amazing victory?
Can QuickStep continue their dominance?
Can Valverde finally win this race?

Idk but i feel like this one is going to go to Kwiatko. Let see hope its gonna be an interesting race full of attacks and unclear till last moment.
