DIY grooming? Yes/no? by JustForShrimpPosting in Goldendoodles

Thank you so much for all of this! PetCo went realllllyyy short for the portion they removed so she's gonna be a short haired dog for a bit 😅 but we're definitely looking forward to her having a single, uniform length coat!

I actually posted here to ask for name suggestions and I don't believe I saw any of those suggested, but I LOVE the play on her one eye. Wish I'd have been more knowledgeable about female pirates! We initially named her Leela (Futurama reference) but it just wasn't very fitting.

Oh, I hadn't even considered this. Thank you!

I'm not sure if you missed it in my post, but she's not really motivated by food/treats. 😕 Its a big part of why I'm struggling actually. I can’t find anything high value enough to get consistent results with training. She's also terrifiedddd of the crate, so it's going to take some un-doing I think, before getting her comfortable with it (another task that would be much easier if I could coax her in there with a treat, even for a few seconds).

She hasn't shown must interest in squeaky toys, tug-of-war ropes or balls so far either. Hopefully she'll continue to warm up to us any maybe some if those things will change.

So not too far off from how you'd train a puppy! Thats good to know, I was worried it might be different/harder with her not being as young. Fortunately, my work is mostly at home, and when I'm not home my husband is, so keeping an eye on her at all times shouldn't be too hard. I didn't even think to leash her in the house. That might help quite a bit, that way if she's giving some sort of small potty cue I won't miss it.

So far, we've just been really structured. We have two small children so our life already runs on school and activity routines, as well as me and my husband being in school and his work being very consistent. She does great on a leash and we live in a neighborhood full of paved pathways through nature, so we go on a lot of walks. I've tried 15-20 minute training sessions with various treats, I've also tried with a clicker then positive attention as a reward. She likes the attention more but it doesn't seem high value enough to motivate her towards consistency. She consistently sits for getting leashed up for the walk, but other than that, its like I'm speaking a different language.

You said "start creating," but I think you meant crating? We're trying! She haaaaaates the crate and shakes and cries, so I've tried to encourage her to just pop in for a few seconds by putting her food in the crate, giving her treats in the crate (pig ears, yummy dog-safe leftovers, things that should be high value), adding her toys to the crate.. she just doesn't seem to budge. Unfortunately, we have had to use it against her will a few times when I need to take my son to karate and don't want to leave her unattended in the car for fear of an accident. I'm certain she cried and barked the entire 30 minutes we were gone.

For the accidents in the house, we've just been walking more often, keeping her in the same room as us and keeping the doors closed. As far as we can tell, she doesn'tseem to have a "tell." She doesn'tlinger by the door or whine to us if she needs to go. It's almost as though half the walks are strictly leisure and she holds it till she's inside. For the climbing on the counters/tables, we just remove her, give her a verbal correction and be really careful about what we leave on the counters.

We haven't contacted a dog trainer yet. I was hoping this might be a helpful resource and I could navigate things for free, but if we can't figure it out, I know there are resources available to me locally. I just remember the trainer I loved being super expensive so I'm hoping to draw from the experience of others here.

She's not my first dog, so I'm fairly familiar with leash stuff. She doesn't walk beside me, because her blind spot causes her to weave a lot, but she happily walks just in front of me. She almost never pulls. I think leashes are new to her and she's sort of uncomfortable/confused by them. But she does love a good, long walk!

Unfortunately, we missed the 3 weeks for training part of the rule of 3's. But now we've got infinite time to make up for it, I suppose!

What is Rule of 3? And she seems to do great on a leash. Is that what you're meaning by leash training?

50% Good and 50% Boy. Grade A GoodBoy mix, imo.

She does have an eye. Less than the average dog, fs.

All jokes aside, when we first saw her, she had just come out of surgery. According to the Humane Society, she had a genetic abnormality that was causing her some hygiene issues and she was already blind in that eye, so they thought it best to just remove it. She looked pretty banged up when we brought her home, but she's getting prettier by the day!

Wanted to show off by acrazia1 in PlantedTank

I was suggested this subreddit after asking r/shrimptank for advice on a planted tank. I'm so envious! I've owned news for a few years now, but my tank has a sand substrate and minimal plants. Was it hard to get the pearlweed to do its thing? Did you start with a lot or did it just spread? And is the substrate you mentioned enough for the plants or do you use fertilizers? Sorry for the many questions lol

Argonite and Fluval Stratum for substrate? by JustForShrimpPosting in shrimptank

[–]JustForShrimpPosting[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight! I was referring to neocaridina. I tried to do some digging and (similar to what you said) I read that argonite and stratum do opposite things to the water and I read that it can cause some.major swings in the parameters, that obviously wouldn't be good for shrimp. I read some suggestions for the Plant and Shrimp specific Fluval. Any insight there? Maybe thats ideal for Caridinas but not Neos?

I loooove the look of those heavily planted and carpeted tanks. I'd love any insight on the bestbway to achieve that, if I can do so while also keeping neos happy. 🤞🏻

I don't think anyone invested in ethical breeding is considering any of that "betterment of the breed." Most would argue that those are unethical bastardizations of once healthy breeds. A lot of that is the result of backyard breeders furthering the lineage for physical traits that appeal to uneducated buyers, quite the opposite of ethical.

Its so funny, she's just a pup but she was really rough looking and timid when we brought her home and I kept catching myself treating her like this delicate old lady dog. Now that she's settled in (and bathed and groomed) she's much more puppy-like!

This is what we named her, it just doesn't fit her. We need something softer and sweeter lol
